1. Leadership is the ability to prepare, coordinate, learn, and follow, a group in a quest to accomplish a specific task/mission, or a state of being over-all successful. Keeping the group’s motivation, dedication, esprit de corps, and over-all well being positive. Ensuring failures are considered learning points for improvement and successes are recognized. Furthermore the ability to foster these abilities in other members of your group as to take your place in the future should be equally as important as the primary result. 2. The leadership influences that have made me the leader I am today is not a singular event, they continue to change and alter my leadership styles based on location, personnel, mission, and time. All influences didn’t come from “good” leaders, some came from the position placed leaders, who did not carry the abilities of the fore mentioned leadership definition. My family and coaches significantly influenced me through my child hood on dedication and devotion to duty. I would then go on to learn the importance of esprit de corps from the Army, which would continue on through my operational units and missions. I learned early in my career to take the totality of a situation and weigh all options before making a decision that would affect a members or teams career or degradation in any of our core values. My personal experiences of leadership started when I was younger, roughly 7 years old, I was elected the captain of my travel soccer team. At the time I didn’t think much of it, nor did I have any extra duties that I was explicitly told that I needed to perform. Later throughout the season, I started to notice my teammates mimicking my styles and techniques and I highly enjoyed this feeling of being looked up to. I didn 't realize until years after that the recognition and pride I felt was leadership. This privilege of being captain was the first time I had realized that people weren 't necessarily following my actions because I was extraordinarily skilled, but because I provided this role model status with my confidence and encouragement. Throughout my three years at Barnegat High School I have strived to be a respectful, responsible and influential student and athlete. I have worked hard to stand out among my peers, be dedicated to everything I do, work towards achieving my personal goals and positively influence those around me. As an individual and a young adult, I believe it is the responsibility of younger generations to work towards being the best version of ourselves we can possibly be and positively contribute to others and our community. In addition to working full time and attending school as a full time student, I shadowed a Dosimetrist and a Radiation Therapist at Gamma West Cancer Services for approximately 30 hours over a one month period. This job shadow included participation in the care of cancer patients and use of computed tomography. I have had multiple opportunities to serve the people in my community and in other communities near me. I have had the privilege to volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America for two years. This has allowed me to mentor and aid young men in learning life skills, service, leadership, overcoming obstacles, and the power of hard work. Today I will be addressing three main topics for my NHS application. The three main topics consist of my main qualities/ beliefs, leadership, and service. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms.
