My personal experiences of leadership started when I was younger, roughly 7 years old, I was elected the captain of my travel soccer team. At the time I didn’t think much of it, nor did I have any extra duties that I was explicitly told that I needed to perform. Later throughout the season, I started to notice my teammates mimicking my styles and techniques and I highly enjoyed this feeling of being looked up to. I didn 't realize until years after that the recognition and pride I felt was leadership. This privilege of being captain was the first time I had realized that people weren 't necessarily following my actions because I was extraordinarily skilled, but because I provided this role model status with my confidence and encouragement. Some of the most valuable leaderships traits that I acquired and fortified are:

Throughout my three years at Barnegat High School I have strived to be a respectful, responsible and influential student and athlete. I have worked hard to stand out among my peers, be dedicated to everything I do, work towards achieving my personal goals and positively influence those around me. As an individual and a young adult, I believe it is the responsibility of younger generations to work towards being the best version of ourselves we can possibly be and positively contribute to others and our community. Overall, I aspire to be a well rounded individual and character that demonstrates the qualities of respect, citizenship, and responsibility.

In addition to working full time and attending school as a full time student, I shadowed a Dosimetrist and a Radiation Therapist at Gamma West Cancer Services for approximately 30 hours over a one month period. This job shadow included participation in the care of cancer patients and use of computed tomography. I have had multiple opportunities to serve the people in my community and in other communities near me. I have had the privilege to volunteer with the Boy Scouts of America for two years. This has allowed me to mentor and aid young men in learning life skills, service, leadership, overcoming obstacles, and the power of hard work. I have been able to participate in multiple Eagle Scout projects including helping collect and package

Today I will be addressing three main topics for my NHS application. The three main topics consist of my main qualities/ beliefs, leadership, and service. I first want to thank the organization for this amazing opportunity. Throughout this essay I will highlight these three aspects character, leadership, and service in my life.

Personally, I feel like possessing a passion for this role means possessing a passion for leadership, for being a voice, for making a difference, for representing others and for creating a better community in which everyone has a say and in which everyone is comfortable. Those are things I’m passionate about. I want to have the ability to make a change and to make others feel like their opinions and ideas really do matter. I enjoy representing people and I want people to know that they can come and talk to me, that I can get their suggestions across to others. Also, SRC executive is one of the leadership positions for my year level and being a leader is one of the few things that I have a natural talent for. “The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves,” according to Ray Kroc. As a senior about to embark on the next journey of my life I hold myself to an extremely high standard. I strive for excellence and being an example for others. Although, when I fall short I take those moments to improve myself and to come closer to those standards the next day. I value being a leader in my community and school. I strive to be a respected leader by my peers, and emulate others possessing strong leadership qualities.

According to Webster’s Dictionary, leadership is the power or ability to lead other people, the act or instance of leading. I believe that Leadership is an art, the art to get others to follow and accomplish a common goal or task in a harmonic manner. A leader can be shown in all kinds of shapes and forms. To be a great leader many people believe it consists of modeling the way, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, and encouraging the heart. Over the course of me learning how to become a better leader and being in leadership roles, I’ve learned that all these are very necessary to be a great leader.

I have been blessed to have some very strong positive and negative influences in my life that have molded me into the man, leader, and husband I am today. I often struggle with being a leader and feel like I need to improve daily with this craft. I rely on my adolescence experiences and my Coast Guard professional development to guide my leadership philosophy.

Over the years, a great deal of time, and research has been dedicate to the study of leadership. Even with extensive data on the topic, many still disagree on what leadership really means. Hence, leadership is a word that has many different meanings and different researched theories associated with it. On a basic level, leadership involves having and establishing a clear vision, sharing that vision with followers, respecting followers, and leading an organization with excellence while ensuring that everyone is part of the team. Leadership is also a method by which a leader uses his or her influence towards getting a group of followers to take ownership or buy into a vision.

Leadership is an approach for a leader to guide, motivate, supervise, manage, and influence others in different situation to reach a goal. According to the Pettinger (2007), the leadership can be explained in several situations. First, the leaders have the responsible to provide vision and direction to the followers. Second, the leaders shall energise and motivate the followers. Third, the leaders shall set and enforce absolute standards of behaviour, attitude, presentation and performance.
