As William McIlvanney once said, “Good lies need a leavening of truth to make them palatable”. Although it’s a bit harsh to say that police procedural shows are “lying” per se, it is unquestionable that a great deal of the information presented is aggrandized for the sake of entertainment. That being said, there is at least some truth to the more well-thought-out shows. In the case of Dexter, a show about a Miami forensic scientist who kills other serial killers, that truth comes in the form of Dexter Morgan. Dexter is the protagonist, a deeply disturbed man who is for the most part a chillingly accurate portrayal of the classic psychopath.
