Honest Abe
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12th, 1809 in a log cabin in Kentucky. He was raised by poor parents and received less than a year of formal education. He was mainly self-educated by reading a lot of books on his own. Lincoln was known for being an opponent of slavery. His main accomplishments include leading the United States through the Civil War and abolishing slavery.
Young Abraham came from humble beginnings and first acquired his nickname ‘Honest Abe’ as a store clerk in New Salem, Illinois. This was all well before he became the president of the United States. A few stories show how he earned this name and why it is well deserved. After shortchanging a customer, Lincoln closed down the shop and walked as far as it took, in this case, 6 miles, to return the coins to the customer. (Leidner) In another instance, a customer bought a half-pound of tea and he accidentally weighed a quarter pound. Again he personally delivered the remainder of the tea to the customer. A local was quoted saying that Lincoln was “attentive to his business — was kind and considerate to his customers & friends and always treated them with great tenderness — kindness & honesty.” (Miller, 116) After borrowing a book from a neighbor, it was soaked and ruined by the rain in his cabin in which he left it overnight. He then worked on his neighbor’s farm to repay his
The ideas we have come to know today about Abraham Lincoln were not even a thought in his head during this period nor was anyone writing down myths about him. While the years toiled on for Lincoln he was becoming a man of much knowledge and one who had set his sights on making something great of himself. So he inspired to be a lawyer which he accomplished laying the ground work for his well-documented abundance of patients and strategy (Philips & Dr., 2015). Both of which are contributors to some of the myths about him.
When someone thinks “hero” they probably picture a burly man in a suit and cape, weaving between skyscrapers and saving small, screaming and vulnerable citizens from some evil force. Although not all heroes wear capes and fly around saving people, all heroes have a common virtue - the ability and willingness to sacrifice themselves for the good of others. Furthermore, heroes tend to follow a particular sequence of events, referred to as a “Hero’s Journey.” Abraham Lincoln was a hero because he follows Joseph Campbell’s “Hero’s Journey” and was a vehicle of change for the United States of America. Lincoln grew up in a very modest setting, and lived on the edge of poverty.
April 15, 1865 was a highly anticipated evening at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C. President Abraham Lincoln, along with Vice President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward were scheduled to attend a showing of Our American Cousin. This enjoyable gathering soon turned to tragedy for the American leaders. In the middle of the performance, shots were fired and blood was shed while the unassuming audience sat oblivious to the events unfolding. John Wilkes Booth executed his scheme to assassinate President Lincoln, one of the most important and influential men in American history, who inspired the masses with his unexpected rise to power.

It is hard not to agree with David Herbert Donald in his biography of Abraham Lincoln. He does his best to not give his professional opinion of anything and only writes about the topics from which he has proof of. The main ideas that the author has throughout the text is greatly supported with Lincoln’s own papers and from written first-hand accounts of his generation. Donald accounts for the changes of position on slavery and the equality of blacks throughout his presidency. I think that this book is a great depiction of Abrahams Lincoln’s life.

Hofstadter is an author who criticizes many historians. In the book, “In The American Political Tradition” Hofstadter does nothing but criticize different historians. One particular historian he challenges in his writings is Abraham Lincoln. According to Hofstadter, Abraham Lincoln was “the exemplar of the self-made man,” he was a very humble man that easily pleased the people and easily attained very high political ranking, as well as success and a lot of power. Abraham Lincoln’s flaws as a president were often overlooked because many Americans felt as if he brought to life what is known to be the great American dream. Because of this, many of his good qualities were true, but yet exaggerated. In this chapter about Lincoln it was
