Abortions have been happoning for thousands of years. In the US abortion laws first appeared in the 1820s, making abortions illegal. Abortions durring the 1800s were extremely unsafe and risky. This was because Hospitals were not common, antiseptics were not available. All fifty states had made abortions illegal by 1965 except those saving a mother's life. But this did not stop women from getting abortions. Women illegally aborted their fetuses. This type of abortion is known as a back-alley abortion. These abortions are very dangerous. According to the National abortion accotion there was an estimated 1.2 million illegal abortions per year, and thousands of women either died or suffered serious medical problems as a result of illegally having a abortion. Some women used a private doctor to get the abortion illegally. In 1973 there was a famous supreme court case known as Roe v. Wade. In this court case Norma McCorvey known as Roe, was claiming that an 1859 Texas abortion law violated women's constitutional right to have an abortion. The court ruled in favor of Roe and declared the Texas abortion law as unconstitutional. This ruling was very significant, because it legalized abortion. In the 1960s the civil rights movements motivated and influenced women to seek rights for themselves and they saw abortion as a topic to bring up.
