Arthur Jackson Prof. O`keefe English Composition 30 march 2015 THE LEGALIZATION OF MARIJUANA No matter what side of this issue a persons beliefs land them on, there is definitely no denying the amount of money the states who have legalized are bringing in on tax revenue is truly astounding. Despite how you divide the money there will more than likely be enough to go around, seeing how Colorado is poised to rake in nearly $800 million in 2015. Can you imagine if our state had this kind of extra revenue? Could they fund the public schools, or maybe fix a few streets that have gotten bad? Better yet could they lower the income tax on residents, and possibly create a few more jobs with the surplus of money created? The short answer is YES to all of the above by legalizing the industries of recreational, medical, and agricultural marijuana. Let’s all be rational adults for a minute and think of it like this, marijuana has been here longer than you, me, our forefathers, and theirs. It will be here long after I am gone, and you also for that matter. The harsh reality is that people will find a way to get what they want legal or not. If we make it illegal people go to the street dealers and cartels which feed into the black market (and according to our government, terrorism). They then over crowd our prisons and cost the U.S. tax payer billions of dollars a year to house. If we legalize the industries we open up an entirely new market, tap into a renewable source of
Although it is a highly common defense that marijuana is not addictive, it in fact is. Many regular smokers find themselves ridden with very similar withdrawal symptoms of a tobacco addict (Marijuana Addiction Symptoms and Effects). Around 9% of people who use find themselves dependent on marijuana (Is Marijuana Addictive?). That may not seem like much, but that is almost 1 in every 10 people hooked on a drug that is supposedly “non-addictive.” Legalizing a drug that causes disorientation, paranoia, depression, anxiety, dizziness, and a slowed reaction time is not safe, not to mention the fact that it is a gateway drug, often leading users to use even more damaging and dangerous drugs (Is Marijuana Addictive?). With the legalization of a drug like marijuana comes increased use and abuse of the drug. Marijuana is unsafe medically for the individual using and for the people around them when the user is under the influence, it will cost the government money and time and it will cost employers tons. Legalizing marijuana would be a huge mistake by our country.
First and foremost, majority of society is uneducated and unaware of the many benefits legal marijuana can bring about. These benefits are for us as individuals, for our economy, and for our government as a whole. You can have thoughts and opinions, criticize ones who use marijuana, say that they are a drug attics or bad people, but you would clearly be uneducated having said that. The plant, cannabis, “marijuana”, has a class of
Marijuana these days is causing indefinite amount of problems because it is not legal. Since it is not legal in the U.S., Drug Cartels are taking advantage of that and illegally importing their products across the border by the use of “Drug Mules” or underground tunnels. That hurts us tremendously, since we invest millions of dollars every year to strengthen our border security to, but they always find a way to get it into the country because of high demand and price for illegal marijuana. Drug Cartels are also taking millions to billions of dollars illegally out of our economy, which is not helping our National Debt. If we legalize marijuana we can prevent the Drug Cartels from making money because people will have an easier way to buy it and we can also regulate how
Legalization of marijuana is an important issue; most people recognize it as “harmful and addictive,” from the essay “Marijuana Should Not Be Legalized,” while others regard the ban on marijuana as ineffective, expensive, and unjust (1). According to Senator Bernie Sanders, “too many Americans have seen their lives destroyed because they have criminal records as a result of marijuana use. That’s wrong.” The ban is unjust for Americans because it is a complete waste of our tax dollars to continue criminalizing citizens for marijuana use. Legalization of marijuana in every state will be beneficial; for our economy, medical value and breakthroughs, lowering crime rate, aiding people who are victims of drug abuse, and more. The following paragraphs will explain further.
The fact that cannabis is still illegal in forty-eight states is insane. Cigarettes, alcohol, and fast food kill hundreds of people every year and those are legal? I mean one- third of all AIDS cases in the US have been caused by syringe sharing (counterpunch). Study after study has shown that Marijuana is way less harmful than tobacco and alcohol (factslides). Cannabis has not even been directly linked to a death due to overdose, car accident, or cancer ever (Huffington). These are many reasons why many people support marijuana legalization and one of those reasons is because of the medical benefits. A drug that does not have severe side effects or could possibly kill you. Drugs like Cocaine, Heroine, Alcohol, Cigarettes. Those are the real drugs. Not Marijuana.
Marijuana legalization has been a topic of interest for many years in this country. How to regulate it? Tax it? Where it can be used? By whom? How old? Who can sell it? Federally legal or locally legal? The penalties involving it? All of those are questions that have been debated about and fought over in courts of law. Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been jailed for minor crimes involving Marijuana. It has many proven benefits both economically and medically. The times are changing and prohibition against marijuana is starting to fade away. Although still illegal federally, it is now fully legal in eight different states, and medically legal in thirty! This is great progress, but still isn’t enough. Marijuana will soon be legalized. There is plenty of benefits and I am fully for the legalization of marijuana nationwide.
Should medical marijuana be illegal in the United States? Twenty- three states have legalized “medical marijuana” in the last couple of years. Medical marijuana is a drug that supports treatment for certain illness like cancer and diseases of the eyes. The Executive Branch of the United States government has a “drug” policy manual. The Senate and the House of Representative added an amendment to a federal spending bill that was an historic event, while the Courts stop the DEA in their tracks. The branches of the government have affected the American people in so many ways when it comes to drug laws, both good and bad.
Marijuana, a speculated harmful gateway drug where ‘Marijuana raids are more harmful than the drug itself”(Ingraham, 2017). Is Marijuana really that harmful to be illegal? Marijuana is currently illegal in some states in the U.S. and Canada for recreational use, medical use or both. Some areas already legalized the use of Marijuana like California, Nevada, etc. which is causing controversy since other states and countries won’t. Marijuana should be legal as the facts and statistics are coming out, like, the health benefits, the Economic benefits and how a low-risk drug like Cannabis compares to other legal drugs.
I believe that weed should not be legalized. The reason for that is because to many people use it for the wrong reason, they make up excuse when they can be doing better than that. Marijuana even mess up with people health and you don’t even know it.
Marijuana is a kind of plant that people smoke to get feeling that they like. As far as we know, marijuana is illegal in the United States and most of the countries in the world. Nevertheless, in the United States there are two states where people can use marijuana legally: Colorado and Washington. However, many people argue that marijuana should be illegal, and other people say marijuana cannot be legal. Marijuana is a dangerous kind of drug, so it should not be legal because it may affect many problem or diseases such as, lung cancer, lead to other drugs and it could make anyone criminal.
The legalization of marijuana is such a growing debate in the United States, whether it’s on television, in the classroom, or in your own kitchen; you may find yourself debating about it with someone. You are either for it, against it, or indifferent. Either way you still have an opinion of some sort about the legalization of marijuana. Christopher Beach and William Bennett are no different. The release of their article on called “Legalize Juggernaut” on WeeklyStandard.com timing is perfect since the legalization of marijuana is such a hot topic these days. With Some states already starting to decriminalizing the possession of marijuana and other states Like Colorado making marijuana totally legal, it’s a no brainier that Beach and Bennett chose to write an article about this topic. The two authors of the article “Legalize Juggernaut”, Beach and Bennett are strongly against legalizing marijuana. They argue that legalizing marijuana won’t be beneficial to anyone one in the United States. Beach and Bennett had numerous reasons behind their claim. One of their reasons is that over the last 10 years, fatal car accidents involving people who were stoned have tripled. Another reason that Beach and Bennett claim marijuana should be legalized is because it won’t produce a financial windfall and the money that state government in Colorado will make because of legalization won’t be as great as the societal cost of wasted lives”. Their last reason Beach and Bennett say marijuana
You have those who oppose the new president elect, and then there are some Californians who are disgruntled with the passing of certain propositions.
I feel the same way! There are many people in jail with life without parole because of marijuana charges but people who have murdered with less sentences. How crazy. I believe that legalizing marijuana would be greatly beneficial especially with prescription drug and alcohol use like you mentioned in your post. It would be a better alternative in the long run.
My best friend used to smoke marijuana on a regular basis. Over time, he developed many obvious bad habits and changed his life style tremendously. He started getting lazy with schoolwork, and did not show much interest in anything at all. His parents noticed all these side effects that had been occurring but were unaware that their son smoked marijuana. After the grades fell so much, they decided to take him to get checked out because they were afraid he had developed some sort of ADD. They come to find out that because of him smoking so much marijuana it had led to brain problems, memory problems and affected his thinking skills. He was unable to stay concentrated on something and constantly was out of breath when any physical activity
The legalization of marijuana is a very controversial issue that is being debated across the United States. In the article "Going to Pot?," by Damon Linker, Linker attempts to persuade readers that legalizing of marijuana can cause more harm than help. This publication was released in November of 2001. Although two other writers, Richard Lowry and Andrew Sullivan, try to change readers beliefs Linker maintains his stance against marijuana. Without discrediting their facts he explains and defends why he feels they are wrong. The article is formal and although religion is not talked about, morals and society standards are questioned. Throughout the argument, Linker proves that effects of marijuana are detrimental to our society and
