The United States has been tricking its people for over 50 years, the government continues to say that marijuana is harmful to one’s health and well-being, yet the positives of this drug outweigh the very few negatives. There have been countless studies trying to pin at least one serious side effect of smoking or ingesting marijuana, but these studies are ultimately unsuccessful. Marijuana in fact, has many health benefits, ones that can cure or suppress many modern diseases, some of which can modern medicine to shame, why would we need anything else? There are many other more dangerous drugs on the market. Tobacco, Alcohol and prescription pills, these three things kill hundreds of thousands of people annually, but the government …show more content…
Serious, life threatining diseases like cancer have been effectively treated from medical marijuana. It has been known to suppress cancer, help depression, reduce blood pressure, treat glaucoma, alleviate pain and even inhibit HIV, it is also an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. “The late Dr. Tod Mikuriya, a former national administrator of the U.S. government's marijuana research programs, appeared in a film about the business of marijuana prohibition shortly before his 2007 death called The Union… ‘After dealing with about 10,000 patents in the last 15 years, I'd say about 200 different medical conditions respond favorably to cannabis,’ Mikuriya said” (Smith). Marijuana is the future of medicine; it will save countless lives without the serious risk of taking others.
Marijuana’s healthy benefits come from the two compounds that make up the plant, THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (Cannibidiol), these two things are what make the plant so great. THC is the compound in the plant that gets one “high” and the reason why most recreational users partake. Even though THC has many health benefits, the plants real healing properties come from the compound CBD. This is the part of the plant that doesn’t get one “high” that’s why most growers have bred plants that have no signs of CBD. “The problem is growers realized decades ago that THC is what sells: it provides the floating, Euphoric feeling
Marijuana is a misunderstood drug. Many assume that the usage of marijuana, or cannabis, is dangerous, but it can be the exact opposite. So why is the legalization of marijuana in the United States such a problem for many people today? Considered to be a gateway drug and the reason for the downfall of our youth nowadays, marijuana has developed a negative reputation. Lester Grinspoon, a professor at Harvard University, states, “Few drugs in the United States have produced as much affective heat as marijuana, particularly during the last decade. The controversy essentially revolves around the question of how dangerous or safe the drug is." However, many people are persistent users and believe that this drug is no more harmful than
Medical marijuana has been proven to be a very curable substance. According to Donald Abrams (N.D), as referenced in Kim Ann Zimmermann (2015), “the idea that marijuana may have therapeutic effects is rooted in solid science. Marijuana contains 60 active ingredients known as cannabinoids. The body naturally makes its own form of cannabinoids to modulate pain” .This supports the idea that marijuana can help individuals medically. It can also be helpful for many who need its medical help .Many people will be having the chance to buy and use it if it gets legalized. Marijuana is not in reach of everyone because when individuals want to buy weed they need to get a doctor’s prescription or have an excuse and not everyone can fake an excuse or get a doctors prescription; as a result, many people cannot purchase it except illegally. As long as marijuana is not legalized many individuals won’t be able to use it. Zimmermann (2015) explains that the primary psychoactive cannabinoid in marijuana is THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol. THC is responsible for the psychological effects of marijuana. Moreover, the THC targets cb1 which is located in the brain, nervous system, liver, kidney and lungs the cb1 becomes active most of the time to relive pain (Kim Zimmerman, 2015). Many people call that process of reliving pain as getting “high”. In fact, most of the people who use marijuana use it to feel “high”. Because, when someone
“Studies in the early 1970s showed that marijuana, when smoked, lowered intraocular pressure (IOP) in people with normal pressure and those with glaucoma” (Welsh). Other illnesses marijuana helps would be epilepsy. For example, Robert J. DeLorenzo, of Virginia Commonwealth University, gave marijuana extract and synthetic marijuana to epileptic rats. The drugs rid the rats of the seizures for about 10 hours.(Welsh) Cannabinoids like the active ingredients in marijuana, tetrahydrocannabinol (also known as THC), control seizures by binding to the brain cells responsible for controlling excitability and regulating relaxation. Now it doesn’t completely cure the disease, but it does help the symptoms and most of the causes. Even if it helps a little, it's still better than nothing. It makes it one step closer to finding a cure, with more research and data. Some myths about marijuana are that people get addicted to it easily. A study has shown that most who use marijuana do not become addicted to it. Published data showed that only 9% of adults and 17% of young people get addicted to it (Rathi). Another myth was it’s harmful. It’s not as harmful as other drugs. It is not as dangerous as opioids, for example, but while marijuana may not be as bad as opioids, it still can be dangerous. Another myth would be inhaling marijuana has different risks than eating it. The risks are mostly associated with
Cannabis, also known as Marijuana has many effects to it. In recent years officials have decided that it should be used for medical usage. They have found out that it helps many medical conditions. Medical cannabis has many things that could cure. Studies has shown that it slows the response time in the synapses in the brain it helps the brain heal. For example if someone was in a bad wreck it allows the brain to eventually heal. Because it is unlike other prescribed drugs weed has little to no side effects depending on the person. Compared to others it has the least amount of side effects with the best results possible. Multiple studies have shown among a variety of participants from the age of 3 to 93 that in multiple test subjects that have seizers in the womb and wasn’t able to speak walk or function properly on their own actually begin to learn to use their natural body functions, and It will help to heal the brain, body faster. Medical Cannabis has many cause and effects to it such as, it could help you medically, the cannabis could give you a bad reaction and it could be a gateway to other drugs.
From around 1,000 B.C. until after the American Civil War, the marijuana plant was the world's largest cash crop. Fabric, rope, lighting oil, paper, medicine, food oil, and a source of protein, were just a few of its uses (Overbeck, "Billion"). It's hard to imagine a plant this great had been outlawed. There have been many misnomers and lies that have been spread about the usage of marijuana. In Bruce Goldstein's book, Psychology, three major studies were conducted on the effects of long-time marijuana usage. These studies, one in each of Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Greece, all failed to find evidence of physical or psychological damage in long-time users. But others find that there is evidence that lung damage could occur as a result of
To Some people, it's a relaxing herb, something to temporarily pull the mind from reality. The aroma is unmistakable, the potency various, and there are roughly sixty five million people smoking it. I'm talking about Cannabis Sativa, the illegal strain of hemp known as marijuana. This plant provides many medical benefits that far outweigh the side effects. It has yet to be proven to be addictive or deadly. Marijuana as it stands right now is an illegal narcotic, but I think the drug, with it's physical, psychological, spiritual, but most importantly, medical benefits, should be legalized.
Marijuana is a plant, known as cannabis sativa and cannabis indica, which contains a psychoactive chemical called tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). The effects of THC include disruption of psychomotor behavior, short-term memory impairment, intoxication, stimulation of appetite, antinociceptive, and antiemetic activities. Marijuana, the Mexican name given to cannabis is a mixture of dried, shredded leaves, stems, seeds, and flowers of the plant. Cannabis is a term that refers to marijuana and other preparations made from the same plant. Hemp is a form of cannabis, cannabis sativa L, which contains less than one percent THC; it is used to make clothing, paper, and building materials. Tobacco is smoked just
This research paper seeks to investigate the Decriminalization vs Legalisation and also the Commercialization of Marijuana (Cannabis Sativa), also looking at the Implications for Bioethics, Human Happiness and Medicine. The United States of America’s, National Institute on Drugs, defines marijuana, also known as weed, herb, pot, ganja and Mary Jane as “the dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa.” Marijuana has a long history and dates back to the early 2700s B.C., where it was used by the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung who prescribed the tea for the treatment of gout, rheumatism, malaria and, oddly enough, poor memory” according to an article entitled, “A Brief History of Medical Marijuana” by Patrick Stack
In the United States, it’s often emphasized how important the values of freedom are to the people, and making sure that each citizen is treated equally. When it comes to education, public services, or even work opportunities, the country has always strived towards giving each individual equal opportunities. However, although this is ultimately the goal of the country, there are obviously areas in which freedoms are not equally shared among the citizens, and some problems aren’t even addressed. Currently in America, eight states have approved the legalization of Marijuana for recreational use, and eighteen other states have approved forms of medical uses of the drug. This means that there are a total of forty-two states that have not approved the drug for recreational use, and have criminal laws against it. One of these states happens to be the state of Ohio. Recently, the counties within Ohio have voted for the legalization of both recreational and medical use, ending with a result of only passing medical uses of the drug. This is exactly where the problem exists. The issue originates within the criminal justice system, and also the multiple, unequal challenges that are imposed on those illegally engaging with the drug. This issue goes beyond what some may consider miniscule, because there are direct consequences that follow the current laws that exist. It is understandable that there are various opinions regarding this issue, however, the current laws against the drug
While cannabis affects the economy and the country positively, it also gives benefits the human body. With threatening diseases running rampant through our species, we as humans are attempting to find the most efficient cure. Preventing diseases are also a major priority for our health. Marijuana contains a common ingredient known as cannabinoids. These cannabinoids help stop the inflammation in your brain – which plays a role in diseases like Alzheimer’s, autism, AIDS, Parkinson’s and a few others. Too much inflammation is obviously bad for the brain and since the brain is the body’s main engine. Smoking cannabis consistently can reset the inflammation in your brain and if one were to be reliable with using the drug, the user may die of old age before it becomes an occurring issue. The cannabinoids themselves can slow the onset and in some cases prevent the disease completely but the ingredient cannot cure the disease when diagnosed to an individual. As cancer continues to destroy human lives, cannabinoids kill cancer cells and slow tumor growth. People can be kept of nursing homes and hospitals more often if we can slow the development of these diseases; which saves families and the government a lot of money. Marijuana is

One of the most controversial topics in the news today is the legalization of marijuana. Supporters believe that the drug is not harmful and can have numerous benefits. However, opponents argue that marijuana can lead to addiction and other more dangerous drugs. In the end, marijuana should be legal based on economic, medicinal, and philosophical factors.
Today more and more people are positive towards marijuana legalization in America. A recent study found that 64% of Americans approve of legalization. (Ingraham, The Washington Post, WP Company, 25 Oct. 2017). The medicinal benefits of marijuana are one of the main reasons for need for legalization. Some states in America have already legalized the use of marijuana for medical use as well as other countries like Canada have already allowed medical marijuana use in 2001. If these states and even foreign countries find medical marijuana safe, then why not the US. Marijuana as a medicine can relieve pain for its users along with other benefits. Its beneficial to the everyday relief of migraines, OCD’s, ADHD, ADD, and
Government prohibition of marijuana is the subject of ongoing debate. Many have pursued the legalization of marijuana for a variety of reasons – some seek legal marijuana for personal use, while others hope to legalize in order to reduce our Nation’s debt. People argue over the moral implications of permitting the widespread recreational and medicinal use of a ‘schedule 1’ drug. Lately, there has been a great deal of focus on the monetary value in the form of taxation revenue with respect to the legal production and distribution of marijuana.
Pot has been proven many times to treat epileptic seizures, decrease anxiety, and to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. It’s even been proven to prevent cancer from spreading. (Walsh) Along with all the medical uses for it, it can loosen our dependency on other expensive pills and treatments. There are many beneficial uses of marijuana but the government still lists it as a schedule one drug and won’t give it to people in need.
