Mississippi Solo: In the memoir, Mississippi Solo, Eddy Harris views nature as a friend of his through the literary device of personification. For example, he describes the river’s sounds as, “the idle chatter that you get when you walk with your favorite niece or nephew going nowhere in particular with nothing special on your minds and the kid just jabbers away because it’s comfortable and he feels like it.” This evidence demonstrates how he thinks nature is a friend based on the positive description, using words such as favorite and comfortable, as well as comparing him to a family member. Furthermore, when he states that “the voice of the river came out and spoke to me teasingly but with a chill of serious down my spine”, he ends up being

Living in the segregation era was very hard for the Logan family. Most blacks were treated unfairly and were unable to defend themselves when it came to this treatment. Cassie Logan, her friends and family had may encounters with the Aames brothers that may leave one of her good friends dead. “The Road to Memphis” was written by Mildred D. Taylor in 1990. In the Novel To kill a Mockingbird Author Harper Lee uses Literary Elements to develop the theme of Racism. He uses these elements to also help the reader understand the characters. For example everybody thinks that the book is about racism but it’s mostly about Coming of age. When Scout ask Atticus ‘’Do all the lawyers defend negroes’’and he answers “Of course they do scout”. This quote was one of the most important ones because the reader can see that Atticus is not a racist person.
The author of two novels and multiple classic short stories, Flannery O’Connor is widely regarded as one of the greatest fiction writers in American literature. However, as a Southern and devoutly Christian author in the 1950s, O’Connor was often criticized for the religious content and “grotesque” characters often incorporated into her works. They were considered too “brutal”, too “sarcastic.” (The Habit of Being: Letters of Flannery O 'Connor). O’Connor begged to differ.
Thomas Hardy’s poem, The Convergence of the Twain, can be interpreted in many different ways. For example, I concluded that the title basically means “the coming together of two”, the two being the Titanic and the iceberg. This poem is very open to interpretation.
Great authors use different literary elements to display their thoughts. To Kill a Mcokingbird, a novel written by Harper Lee, takes place in Maycomb, Alabama, during the years of the Great Depression. The novel focuses on Scout Finch, a 6 year old tomboy, and her brother Jem. They both begin realize all of the social issues, such as rape and inequality, that happens in their community throughout the course of the plot. Many people were racist against black people and judgemental against people who were not like them during this time period in the south but Scout and Jem’s father, Atticus, did not want his children to become influenced by these people. Harper Lee uses literary devices such as characterization, symbolism, and conflict to develop
The novel, Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance was eye opening about the poverty situation currently facing the Appalachia people. Vance brings the culture surrounding the community and the government’s effect on the people’s situation down to a level even the strictest Republican or Democrat can empathize with the situation. The issue surrounding low income families is not that the government doesn’t provide enough assistance, but that the culture does not promote the same success potential as the wealthy culture does. The assistance provided to these communities needs to be restructured to help build up the community not just put a band aid on the situation. It is essential to note that Vance believes that government interference with the poor

In the article “The Mesmerizer,” by Mark Twain in his autobiography, Twain tells us a story when he was a teenager. In 1850, there was an exciting event taking place in the village Hannibal. A mesmerizer named Simmons came to town to advertise his show. Simmons has a subject in his show named Hicks. Fifteen year old Twain participates in this show that Simmons promised marvels to his audience, the townspeople. Twain usurps Hicks’s place stealing the spotlight with a lie. Although Twain became the show, the temporary fame that Twain receives is lost years later and continues to bite him back even after many years. Just as Twain is to blame for being carried away with his own fame that was built on a lie, those who were at the
Set in the Antebellum South, Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn documents a landscape that differs greatly from the poised and picturesque scene associated with the contemporary South. Today’s South is synonymous with with ice cold pitchers of tea, ceaseless etiquette exuded on wraparound porches, and seemingly romantic drawls. However, the South that Huck resides in, tells a different story. Specifically, his South is a place where suitable behavior is associated with the acceptance of slavery, and racist slurs pepper every sentence. As a result, any deviation from these behaviors leaves an individual ironically branded with a connotation of being uncivilized. Due to this distorted view of ethics, any character with even a shred
America, written was written by Claude McKay during the years of the Harlem Renaissance. Claude McKay was originally born in Jamaica, but made soon made America his home. While living in America as an African American, he had to deal with many struggles against society due to segregation and Jim Crow Laws. When writing America, McKay uses multiple literary devices to get his central message of bittersweet patriotism across. In this 14 line poem he uses devices such as metaphors, similes, personification, and imagery to get his readers to understand how he is angry with this country but he will never stop loving America.
Social norms are powerful to the point that they influence the actions of all who are members of society. Social norms are so ingrained in most people that to not follow such untold rules of behavior, likely creates serious tension for oneself. Social norms appear to be unique to sentient life meaning something about intelligence helps in their formation and propagation. It is obvious that some level of greater intelligence is needed in the formation of social norms. There are many theories on the purpose of social norms and how they come to be. The theory that emphasizes the importance of social norms in improving interactions between people seems the most probable. This theory explains that those with diverse backgrounds must often interact and communicate with each other and to reduce the risk of misunderstanding, social norms arise as a form of mediation. Social norms can therefore come into being both formally or informally. When social norms are constructed formally, a group of individuals will specifically outline a set of behavioral expectations for that group such as in the case of clubs or work expectations. Most social norms are informally created through repeated cautionary actions used to mitigate potential conflict. When a social norm is formed, it has incredible staying power. As social norms promote some degree of social cohesion, people generally follow social norms for fear of inconveniencing someone or upsetting them. There is also a degree of
Thus, Twain’s early experiences in life helped him to flesh out a well-rounded vocabulary and sparked his interests in adventure and traveling. Twain spent his boyhood in the riverside town of Hannibal, Missouri where he, “experienced the excitement of the colorful steamboats that docked at the town wharf, bringing comedians, singers, gamblers, swindlers, slave dealers, and assorted other river travelers” (Gribben). His exposure to much of the world at a young age opened his eyes to people groups, travel, and differences in dialect that would all become subject matter of his later writing. Twain wrote in Life on the Mississippi that he became acquainted with all the “different types of human nature that are to be found in fiction, biography, or history” while he worked as a steamboat apprentice (128). The diverse people and places he met during his time on the river all became awe-inspiring to him and served as the foundation for his works to come. Countless
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer By Mark Twain Mark Twain's, The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer, is a story told from the eyes of the young Tom Sawyer. The story takes place in the small rustic town of St. Petersburg Missouri. Tom Sawyer is the main character of the book. Tom is an imaginative young man who always seems to be getting into trouble.
Your personality and imagination brings you places that may be unexpected. One of the themes that Mark Twain explores in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is personality and imagination brings you places. Three examples that support this theme are going to the graveyard because of a superstition, going into a haunted house to find treasure, and going into the cave and getting lost. The first example of personality and imagination bringing people to places, is when Tom and Huckleberry go to the graveyard to try out a silly superstition.
