"The Locket" by Kate Chopin is a very interesting short story about a soldier, his locket and his wife back home. Edmond is a soldier who wears the locket around his neck to remind him of his wife and how much she loves him. Through out the story, the author switches between love and despair, war vs. homefront and happiness and sorrow and through those situations throughout the story, the story comes to a surprising ending.
Nothing that was written by the author was predictable. In the beginning of the story we learn that several men around the campfire were questioning Edmond about the locket, but Edmond would't answer. The men began to make up ideas of what the locket could mean, such as a "magical Catholic to protect Edmond." Without Edmond answering any questions about the locket, it began to raise curiosity among the men. Edmond falls asleep with the locket around his neck and begins to dream, he dreams of a serpent trying to strangle him while sleeping and the snake slithers away before Edmond can get it. This was a surprise during the short story because he was dreaming what was actually happening to him by one of the men at the campfire. One of the men at the campfire was stealing the locket from around his neck as Edmond was sleeping.

The bird is a black bird, one that could foreshadow death. A priest is coming through after the battle is over to pronounce the dead and give them a blessing. The priest comes upon "a boy with a locket around his neck." Was Edmond a boy? From the story you may realize that Edmond is a man with a wife at home and not a boy. It is possible at this point to realize that the locket is around the neck of another soldier and not Edmond but that may be difficult to pick up on. Again, a piece of the story that is not
The locket is a great short story. It is well developed, unified and coherent. Its inspiring and touching and moving. Kate Chopin is a great author with well thought out ideas and creative writing. The ending in The Locket didn't surprise me. The author Chopin was foreshadowing through out the whole story. When Edmond came back to find Octavie, and lost the locket, is was predictable. One, By the amount of love he showed for her. To make sure she knew how much she loved him. Two,
At the conclusion of The Locket Edmond told Octavie that he didn't lose the locket but that it was stolen from him. I found the ending confusing but after reading it over I found the ending predictable. The conclusion of the locket was predictable because of three major details. The locket being stolen was predictable because the lockets description, Edmond's messmates, and Edmond's battles as a Confederate soldier. The locket was stolen for its overall value.
The story had two major items of symbolism. The symbols was the bird and it saying
Edmond, a dear loved one of Octavie, was assumingly dead. This was a part of “The Locket”, close to the conclusion in fact. A priest found a locket, which was given to Edmond from Octavie, on a dead unidentifiable man that was found on a battlefield. This gave me the allusion that Edmond ha deceased and as the locket was sent back to Octavie with a letter describing what the priest seen and where he found the locket, which convinced the dear girl that the man she loved has died. Octavie was engaged to Edmond and was grieving his death, wearing black, talking to his father Judge Pillier, and rereading the letter that was sent to her. As the ending of the story drew near, small hints, such as Judge Pillier saying “Do you not think that on a day
The ending of "The Locket" was surprising. It was surprised because it was an unpredictable ending. Probably no one was expecting Edmond to be alive. People were probably expecting Edmond to be dead because in the beginning Edmond has the locker and later on in the unit is written that the necklace was found on the body of a dead person so it was assumed that Octavie lost Edmond forever. It was unpredictable that the locker had been stolen from Edmond.
In the story “the locket” the main character Edmond is a soldier of war that dreams of seeing his love octavie once again. I was surprised by the story ending not expecting it to unfold in the way it did. Throughout the story I was truly convinced that Edmond, the main character’s lover, was really dead which made the ending quite surprising in my opinion. As the story progressed there were many events that helped to build up the suspense and make the ending as surprising as it was.
I felt the story of The Locket was bittersweet. In the beginning of the story you know that the locket was given to Edmund by his sweetheart. You also know that Edmund didn't really want the soldier that asked about the locket to know about it. It was almost like it was his own personal secret or that he didn't want the other soldier to make fun of him about the locket. That is why he made it seem like it was just a good luck charm to ward off danger.
To start off, during the story, I did believe the locket was stolen or lost. Is because one of the men were to curious about. The man said, "What's that you got around your neck, Ned." Saying it in suspenseful way
The Locket is a story about a soldier who is apart from his love for a very long time, and the one thing that makes him the happiest and reminds him of her is that little gold locket she placed around his neck the day of his departure. In the beginning of this short story the locket is described as a good luck charm. Edmond is far away from his lover, Octavie, and only has the locket to keep him safe.
When I was reading “The Locket” I was introduced to Edmond. Edmond is a confederate soldier and Octavie’s lover. While reading, I was lead to believe that Edmond was dead. The priest found a young man with the locket that Octavie once gave to Edmond. That’s when I thought that was the end of Edmond.
In the scene Edna had envisioned earlier the man was watching a bird flying away. At the end of he novel there is a bird as well, however, here it has a broken wing and is “beating the air above, reeling, fluttering, circling disabled down, down to the water” (138). This passage reminded me of a scene earlier in the novel where Edna tells Arobin about her last encounter with Mademoiselle Reisz that has left her thinking about something the pianist had said to her: “She says queer things sometimes in a bantering way that you don’t notice at the time and you find yourself thinking about afterward.” Edna tells Arobin: “[S]he put her arms around me and felt my shoulder blades, to see if my wings were strong, she said. ‘The bird that would sour above the level plain of tradition and prejudice must have strong wings. It is a sad spectacle to see weaklings
My feelings about "The Locket" was i felt like the conclusion and the ending is a happy one and i also believed the young soldier had been killed in battle. I cannot say I was surprised but it was a bit surprising, I did not believe that the locket might have been stolen, nor did I believe it had been lost along the way. The first detail that led me to believe Edmond might be alive was Judge Pillier's mention of miracles that was the moment I realized the ending would be a happy one.
From reading "The Locket' the ending was very predictable. I predicted the ending being Edmond not actually being dead and him waiting the arrival of Octavie at his dads house. First, the author Kate Chopin is known for foreshadowing and irony in her stories. So that makes you expect something.
When I was younger I remember I was given a locket and she told me a story about it, a story that I just would never escape from. My mom gave me this heart locket when I was younger and then she had many memories about it. She said that this locket was her mom’s and my mom was given this locket to her also when she was younger. The sad thing is that I would never be able to replace this locket if something would happen to it. Is not that I wouldn’t find another one just like it, but the memories behind the locket bring so many tears rolling down my cheeks. My mom’s mom died soon after my mom’s wedding. She was in the bathroom taking a shower and when she got out she fell and the compression against her head killed her. There was just too much
To me the ending wasn’t predictable because the couple seen to be happy and I would have thought that Edmond would have gave back to Octavie as a gift. To Octavie the locket was important to her because it once was her mother’s locket. The locket was described to be beautiful and antic with engravings that her mother had put into the locket. I would have predicted the ending to be Edmond giving the locket back to Octavie as a gift and the locket would have more engraved details on it about the two of them. I wouldn’t have thought of the locket being stolen.
