How much can people change in just a few years? In just a few years a person can have a completely different personality. In The Looking Glass Wars, Alyss has many different personalities throughout the story. In this essay, I will be talking about these many different personalities of Alyss.
In the beginning of the novel, Alyss is characterized as troublesome, imaginative, and curious. She gets herself in lots of trouble. The author states “She would rather have hidden with her friend… dropping jolleyjellies from an open window…” (Beddor 1). She thinks being a proper princess is boring. Her and her friend Dodge are like partners in crime. She also has a very big imagination. Her imagination can make things happen out of nowhere. “The mushroom contraption was suddenly covered in in fur...” (Beddor 2). This happens when Alyss is looking at inventions at the Inventor's Fair and she imagines that one of the inventions has fur all over it. Her imagination is very powerful and could be used for bad or good. The author also characterizes her as a curious person. “ A kitten with golden fur rubbed

Beddor writes “ ‘I’m asking for your hand in marriage.’ Leopold explained. ‘But... Your Highness, are you sure?’ ” Prince Leopold has just asked Alice to marry him. Alice has turned into a mature adult, and is ready for marriage. “Her life is as unsure now as it was before.” Alice doesn’t know what is going to happen in her life. She doesn’t have any certain plans for what she will do later in life. She is not even sure how her wedding and relationship will turn out. In the story, Dodge Anders, her best friend from Wonderland shows up at her wedding. “It couldn’t have been him… He didn’t exist.” the author writes. When Dodge shows up, Alyss gets very confused because she does not believe in Wonderland anymore. She cannot believe her eyes when she sees
In New Jersey, there are a set of teaching standards that all teachers must follow in their classrooms. Standard 2ii5 states, the teacher understands that learners bring assets [and liabilities] for learning based on their individual experiences, abilities, talents, prior learning, as well as language, culture, family, and community values. On the other hand, standard 3ii2 says, the teacher values the role of learners in promoting each other’s learning and recognizes the importance of peer relationships in establishing a climate of learning. In this paper, I will be talking about standards 2ii5 and 3ii2 and how they relate to the novel The Pact. The Pact talks about three young doctors and their journeys in getting there. All three of the
The fight for justice is not always unequivocal or favorable, sometimes justice is given by means that do not seem fair at all. William Styron says in a novel that life “is a search for justice.” It is blatant that throughout Khaled Hosseini's novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, female characters are continuously battered with injustices. Hosseini hones into the oppression of women and the fight for women empowerment through the life of one of his main characters, Mariam. Her journey is shown throughout the novel where she struggles to search for and understand justice.
First, Alyss was a naive and mischievous little girl, who became an orphan and had to adapt to a new
In the novel, All the Broken Pieces, by Ann E. Burg, Matt makes a comparison between himself and his brother when he defines his brother as “summer” and himself as “fall”. This metaphor can be explained not only by their physical features, but their emotional and mental characteristics as well. His brother features summer and hasn’t faced any misery, while he himself looks like fall and has come across atrocious things.
In the beginning of the novel, Princess Alyss is characterized as mischievous, endearing, and naive. Alyss loves to play pranks such as “dropping jollyjellies from an open window and watching them splat on the guards below” (Beddor 11). Instead of behaving like a proper princess, she prefers getting into trouble with her best friend, Dodge. However, her pranks are never mean spirited; Alyss just enjoys having fun. Although Alyss is mischievous, her father finds Alyss to be a “delightful creature” (19). Besides her parents, other adults who even sometimes find themselves as Alyss’s targets, such as Bibwit Harte, find Alyss to be endearing. They appreciate her playfulness and are charmed by her. Since Alyss is so accustomed to people loving her, she barely questions, “Where did you come from?” when a kitten randomly appears as a birthday present for her (41). Alyss is naive and never suspects that anyone would want to hurt her and her family. She is easily tricked into bringing The Cat into the palace. Despite her faults, Alyss is loved by many, but her sheltered life has left her vulnerable to The Cat and his master, Redd.
“College is the reward for surviving high school.” In the novel The Wednesday Wars, by Gary D. Schmidt, Holling’s dad does not let Heather, who is Holling’s sister, go to Columbia University in New York. I think this is because he wants Heather to stay living as a family. I also think Holling’s dad hates college. He thinks that college is so stupid, and you just finish high school, and go on in life. I think Heather’s gonna sneakily go to college without her dad knowing.
This passage elucidates the ending of Robert’s state of heartache and continuous thoughts about his sister’s death, Rowena, that are clouding up his mind in the novel The Wars. After the long period of sadness that is surrounding Robert ever since his beloved sister’s death, why did he go ahead and burn his only picture of Rowena so simply if he has been clinging onto her memory for so long? Robert does take initiative and destroys the only thing that he has left of Rowena; however, it is indeed for a worthy cause, and according to Findley, “an act of charity” instead of an “act of anger”. The charity that Findley notes of alludes to Robert himself than Rowena. From burning the photograph of his sister, he is releasing the guilt he has been

In the novel Empire Rising, Michael Briody is a confident, idealistic ironworker from Greenwich Village Ireland. Originally a soldier fighting in the Civil War, Briody escaped prison camp and came to America to start a new life in the Bronx. Due to the hardships he faced in Ireland and trying to get a job in America, Briody now carries an immense love for the work he does on the Empire State Building. The job he does with the rest of the rivet crew is one of the only things that distracts him from the guilt of being a hitman. His other diversion is the relationship he pursues with Grace Masterson, another Irish immigrant who lives on a houseboat. Briody’s strong feelings for Grace are ultimately what lead to his potentially avoidable demise.
The Eye of the Sheep, written by Sophie Laguna is a strong example of how memorable texts can both disturb the reader as well as instil hope. The novel follows the story of the narrator Jimmy Flick, a young, unusual boy and his family. Laguna’s writing style and use of language throughout the text enables the reader to feel the pain and distress in Jimmy’s family without ever losing hope that things will work out. One of the ways in which she does this is through the use of Jimmy’s voice, as it allows the reader to feel the positive energy bubbling inside of Jimmy, while still witnessing the problems that Jimmy’s family have to deal with, such as his father’s drinking habits. Another way is the manner in which the characters are constructed. All the members of Jimmy’s family have multiple facets to them. They are all complex characters that have both light and darkness within them. Through these cleverly constructed characters, Laguna how even good people can do disturbing things. While reading the Eye of the Sheep, there have been multiple different perspectives that have enriched my own interpretation of this text, that again show different facets to the story.
I believe my greatest skill is my ability to empathize with others. Reading novels is my passion and I learn to view things from different perspectives through these reading exercises. When I read a story, I see the world in the protagonist’s point of view or the antagonist’s point of view. I understand why they act that way or makes that decision when they face certain situations. When I’m able to understand their perspective their actions make sense to me.
Throughout Alexandra’s childhood, she often dreamed of pleasures from “a man, certainly, who carried her, but he was like no man she knew…” (p.112) and these fancies continued as she grew older. She often slept in on Sunday mornings and during her lengthy sleep hours she “accidentally” fancied about a man whom she knew nothing about. These dreams appeared during times when she found herself the most fatigued from the unbearable work on the divide; “we grow hard and heavy here” (p.69). Surprisingly, Alexandra became disappointed with herself after the epiphany elapsed. “She would rise hastily, angry with herself, and go down to the bath-house...” (p.112) to cleanse her body. As incorporated in the novel, these feelings expressed more characteristics of Alexandra’s feminism as she daydreamed about a man in her life. However, little did she know that her dreams would soon become a reality.
But he understood that Wonderland’s future depended on Alyss’ survival. The queendom was more important than any single queen. He lifted his eyes to Genevieve, ”I promise,”he said”(650) Hatter took many risks for Alyss due to his determination to find her.”But what if his theory was wrong? What if this puddle led to some unknown destination instead of back to Wonderland? Stepping into it is a serious risk. For Alyss’ sake, and for that of the queendom,it was one he had to take.”(147).Hatters determination to find Alyss is the reason the queendom peace was
“You see Carter, people are two things: greedy and cruel.” (Cormier, 241) This quote said by Archie in The Chocolate War shows us the type of person Archie is. This quote not only describes the type of person Archie is it describes Brother Leon as well. Archie and Brother Leon are both very manipulative between abusing their powers and doing wrong things. Archie is the Assigner of the Vigils and is in position of power which causes students the be afraid of him. Archie and Brother Leon are really similar characters in “The Chocolate War” by Robert Cormier, with examples like both being cruel to students and manipulative.
Life experiences can change a person’s character. Those experiences can make a person better than they used to be, the characters will unlock a new mentality that they thought they never had. Also they better at conquering fears and obstacles. Characters in my novels go through lots of change as the stories progress. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson, events change the character’s views and behavior throughout the novels. In the novels The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Treasure Island, the main characters in the stories go through a change of personality from their adventures and journeys, encounters with obstacles and antagonists, and the completion of their trials.
