John Maxwell writes about many different leadership qualities that everyone should have. To portray a shepherd leader, he uses Psalms 23:1-6, which says: The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,3 he refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.6 Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. With Moses as his successor, Joshua may have not felt qualified to fill his shoes. However, God told Joshua three times to be strong and courageous. (Cree, 2003) Psalm 23:3 reiterates the importance of a confident leader by saying, "He guides me along the right paths for his name sake." Christian leaders can distinguish themselves by confidently leading in the name of the Lord rather than leading selfishly. Another quality of a shepherd leader that Maxwell points out is that he "renews and restores." (Maxwell, 2002) This quality is from Psalm 23:3 which says, "he refreshes my soul." A company should analyze its growth to see if any corrections need to be made. Growth should continually occur within a company and without that growth, a company will fail. For this reason, energy must be put into creating and maintaining a growth plan for their company. The fifth quality that Maxwell says shepherd leaders should have is guidance and direction. A Christian leader that does not have vision will cause his company to perish. This concept is found in Proverbs 29:18 which says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish."
