After reading fifty pages in “The Lord of The Flies,” it is easy to tell this book will have some major themes, and diverse characters. To start off, “The Lord of The Flies” is about a group of boys who are stranded on an island. Due to being able to control the conch, (a shell), and bringing the group of boys together, Ralph was voted to be chief. Ralph has proven to have unique character traits to the reader.
To begin, the author immediately starts to classify Ralph by his physical traits. Surprisingly, the only physical trait William Golding has mentioned, (and he has mentioned this several times), is that Ralph has fair hair. This is shown to the reader on page one. “The boy with fair hair (Ralph) lowered himself down the last few feet

For example, Ralph constantly bullies Piggy. “Ralph shrieked with laughter. He jumped up. ‘Piggy! Piggy!’ ‘Ralph-please’ Ralph clasped his hands in apprehension. ‘I said I didn’t want-’ ‘Piggy! Piggy!’ - page six. In this citation, Ralph is calling this boy “Piggy,” something the boy did not want to be called. Unfortunately because Ralph was so cruel, the rest of the boys call the boy “Piggy”. (Now, the author has never even mentioned Piggy’s real name.) However, Ralph seems to have faith in people. For example page forty states, “‘Almost too heavy.’ (Ralph said) Jack grinned back. ‘Not for the two of us.’ Together, joined in an effort by the burden, they staggered up the last step of the mountain.” This clearly showed the reader Ralph seems to be okay working with other people. Finally, another character trait the author has mentioned about Ralph is he is very creative and a good leader. “‘Wait! Listen!’ He went on in silence, born on his triumph. ‘There’s another thing. We can help them to find us. If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire,’” page thirty eight. This shows the reader Ralph is taking into consideration of everything that may happen, which makes him a good leader. Plus. Ralph thought of a way to solve the problem. This shows he is very creative. These are the main behavioral traits the author has mentioned to the reader for Ralph.
In conclusion, so far “The Lord of The Flies” has been a very interesting novel. It seems to me, (due to the diverse characters), that this novel will most likely have some sort of lugubrious ending that will be some result of a theme. I look forward to continue reading “The Lord of The Flies”. Plus, I look forward to continuing to investigate Ralph’s character and make critical decisions about his future
Ralph in one of the very first characters we meet in the book. When we meet him he seems like any 12-year old boy would be/act. Ralph is also a kid who is very mature for his age and smart. In this story the narrator shows he is a very mature kid in the beginning of the book by saying "‘Shut up,’" said Ralph absently. He lifted the conch. "‘Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things’” (William 22). Having the author have Ralph say this shows us readers that Ralph is giving the suggestion to the boys that they
Through word choice , actions, looks and thoughts, the character of of Ralph is introduced , explained developed over the course of the of the text it reveals his attitude. In the novel ralph finds the conch in the lagoon covered in seaweed ,and then learns how to make a sound when he blows in it. Then they start arguing about whos chief and they chose ralph but a few chapters later they argue over who has the right to be chief . The novel then states “"All this I meant to say. Now I've said it. You voted me for chief. Now you do what I say."They quieted, slowly, and at last were seated again. Ralph dropped down and spoke in his ordinary voice.” this piece of evidence shows how ralph is not wanting to step down his role of being chief and that he is a strong character with a strong personality. Also in the book at a time when ralph is lacking the actions of a good chief, he wants to prove he is the chief by wanting to go check for the beast up on the mountain."I'm chief. We've got to make certain that there is no beast. Can't you see the mountain? There's no signal showing. There may be a ship out there. Are you all off your rockers?" this evidence shows ralph's personality by, Ralph learning that just saying "I'm chief" isn't enough, you have to have people to enforce your system of laws and order.
Lord of the Flies follows the story of British boys who try to survive after their plane crashed on a remote island. As the novel progresses, a rivalry between the main character, Ralph, and the head of the hunters, Jack, begins to emerge. The character of Ralph representing civilization and the desire to remain civilized and hold on to their English Values, while Jack represents the desire to embrace the animalistic instinct and live a darwinist life where the strong live and the weak die. The portrayal of civilization and its effects tend to be positive in the novel with Ralph using his authority as leader to create rules for the safety of the boys and create a plan to try and get the boys off of the island. Ralph and his Friend Piggy both try to hold on to the ethics they were taught back in England and they are portrayed as the most level headed characters in the story. Jack, who abandons the ethics he was taught in society, uses his authority as leader of the
The most prominent trait that ralph displays is that he is a very fair leader that people look up to naturally. On page 22, “the lord of the flies” states “there was a stillness about ralph that set him apart” and on page 23 “”who wants me?” every hand outside the choir was raised immediately”when ralph was asking who wanted him to be chief. The other children wanted ralph as a chief, without even knowing him, as they looked up to him and saw him as an adult
The novel, Lord of the Flies, is a compelling story displaying the metamorphosis of an individual when faced with external and internal conflicts. Ralph is the first character to be introduced in the book. He is the most likeable as he is charming, athletic, and displays strong leadership qualities. However, as the novel progresses, Ralph loses his sense of civilization and undergoes a change in character discovering the evil man is capable of. Ralph’s metamorphosis is captivating and displays the inevitable loss of innocence.
Lyddie changed a lot from the begging of the book to the end of the book. She shows manny ways of change during the book.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding is an exciting story about the fierce battle between savagery and civilization that leads to the survival of some and the death of others. The book is about a group of boys who are stranded on an uninhabited island. They have to decide who is their leader and whether or not to follow the rules that are put in place. The story lord of the flies takes place on a island full of boys including Jack and Ralph. Jack and Ralph have opposite personalities which creates good suspense because they clash. We see their differences in personalities, leadership, but also through their similarities. Jack and Ralph’s differences end up destroying the island, the group, and all civilization. Jack is very demeaning person and who manipulates power to show who’s boss, which isn’t the case for Ralph.
