To recover from the storm, I select “The Banjo” by Louis Gottschalk as my next piece. In contrast to the fierce thunderstorm in Moonlight’s third movement, Banjo is full of cheerful and light-hearted melodies. As if a sunshower, the music refreshes our mind and energizes our spirit.

There was saxophone improvisation during this song and though it was an improvisation it seemed to fit in perfectly with the rest of the song. It was a simple improvisation but was still very powerful. There was also a short trumpet solo that was just as simple yet powerful as the one on the

Julia Alvarez’s book, in the time of the butterflies is set in the Dominican republic- small country that shares an island with haiti .The dominican republic was under dictatorship for 31 years.The brutal dictator Trujillo was in power from 1930-1961.His dictatorship was very oppressive. He had secret police and spie everywhere he didn’t give the citizens, especially women any basic freedoms. Julia Alvarez was born in the dominican republic durican this time , but her family was able to move to the united states. She wrote the novel, In the time of the Butterflies to honor three very strong women from her home country. Julia Alvarez explains the way society was in the dominican republic in her book, In the Time of the Butterflies.

Throughout history women have always been minimized from social, sexual , and political aspects juxtaposed to men. Just like in the novel  In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez, the author uses the Mirabal sisters to demonstrate the inequalities set in the Dominican Republic. The dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo causes the Mirabal sisters to come together and overthrow Trujillo’s regime.Trujillo. Rafael Trujillo was despised by many yet many were forced to worship him like some type of paragon. As the novel progresses, illustrations of male dominance often appear throughout each chapter. The Mirabal sisters: Minerva, Patria, Maria Teresa and Dede each demonstrate the ability to overcome stigmas in order to obtain freedom.

This review is about the Studio Big Band and their performance in the Casa Loma Room at the University of Redlands on Thursday, February 23rd at eight in the evening, under the direction of Prof. David Scott. Julia Alvarez’s novel In the Time of the Butterflies shows the lack of fairness in society and the importance of maintaining a strong family bond. Trujillo was not fair between men and women and granting men the rights to do whatever they want. The Mirabal sisters’ revolutionary against president Trujillo and fighting for freedom of the country and its people. In Saudi Arabia women are now granted to drive, but there some other things that men can do but women cannot. The Mirabal family has a strong maintain of a family bond. Minerva is one of the four sisters who is brave and had the courage to stand for others and started the revolution against the president.

“If you don’t study your history, you are going to repeat it” (312). Dedé states this in In the Time of the Butterflies after being questioned why she shares her story. The historical fiction novel by Julia Alvarez, takes place in the 1940’s, under the dictatorship of Trujillo, and in 1994 when Dedé recites her family’s historic and engrossing life. The Mirabal sisters up rise against the government, hoping to gain freedom for the Dominican Republic. “In the Time of the Butterflies” takes place in the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. The author, Julia Alvarez is a native of the country, but moved to the US at a young age. She first heard about the sisters roughly around 1986 and instantly felt the need to share their story with the world. In the book, Alvarez tells the story of the Mirabal sisters and their fight for freedom against the Dominican dictator Trujillo. Rafael Trujillo reigned for about 30 years until his assassination in May of 1961. Trujillo’s reign of terror began in 1930 and the violence soon followed. The self centered dictator changed the names of cities and murdered roughly about 20,000 Haitians from the neighboring country. The book not only tells the sisters’

History may define the identity of a nation, but its progress and social change makes the nation a legacy. The way society is systemized today is the result of a millennia of years of victories and failures. Social change is a blessing of humanity where the basic traits of expression, belief, greed and cruelty unite to determine the fate of society. In the 20th century, Jazz was one of the most expressive forms of music around, as it was just starting out and was born in a time where victims of oppression were beginning to stand up and rebel. In comparison to classical music, Jazz is a very new genre of music. It’s evolution is vividly evident in it’s contrast of instrumentation, dynamics, and the introduction of modal jazz which I will discuss later on in this essay. One of the first jazz virtuoso’s that appeared and had a significant influence on jazz, was Sidney Bechet, on clarinet and saxophone.

Genre: Nonfiction. The gripping story of how a young, poor, African-American boy, physically abused by his father and bullied at school, finds a creative outlet for his anger through music when his teacher gives him a trumpet. The rise to fame, and the creation of bebop music by jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie is told with a narrative containing rhyme, rhythm, and alliteration. The narration imitates the sounds of jazz and scat that Dizzy created. A note from the author included at the end of the narrative brings further insight into Dizzy’s life as a teacher of bebob and role model for musicians.

Click, Click, tch, Click, Click, tch, swish, swish, click, tsk. It sounds like that is actually happening, right? " Jazz Fantasia" by Carl Sandburg is about an outstanding jazz performance. Carl uses different techniques to emphasize the sounds so the reader can hear the music. Sensory details onomatopoeia and syntax show the readers that jazz makes everything come to life.

The next song on the playlist was called “Everything Happens To Me”. The texture to this was very soft as well. The instruments were playing off each other but it was still a freestyle type of song. I think jazz is generally played like freestyle. There was no melody to this song. The rhythm was not existent as well. It was more of a free flowing song. This song had a very quiet dynamic. It sounded very romantic like something out of a movie. The tempo of the song was very slow and mild but the trumpet was going very fast. The cello and the drums had a portion of the song where they fed off each other’s energy and the trumpet was doing its own thing.

When listening to “The Santé Fe Jazz Combo,” you get a mellow feeling that courses through your body. Their opener “Recorda-Me,” which was my favorite piece, featured solos from Dr. Hamilton on Piano, Spencer Hoefert on Guitar, Ben Salhanick on Bass, Doc B on Alto Sax, Wyatt Thomas on Trombone, and Noah Woolard on Drum Set. The song had a moderate swing tempo that kept your feet tapping up until the solo. First, the brass rang through their part, then the electric instruments. Next came the bass; he was strumming so fast but he was barely audible. The pianist busting through with a tricky piano rift and the drummer finished it off with an intense solo. Every rim-shot sent a jolt into the air like lightning and the buzz rolls sounded like thunder. Noah’s part reminded me why I love playing the drums.
