High power could be given to one at any time desired. Loyalty was an attribute Beowulf held throughout his life. Beowulf lived to strengthen and to care for the tribe. Beowulf could become a king, but instead of battling and betraying a friend, he chose to be righteous and loyal. Rather, Beowulf was happy to be able to give his loyal duties to Hrothgar. Beowulf stood out from others due to his extraordinary loyalty to his king. He protected the king at all cost even if it meant giving up his own life. Beowulf swore to King Hrothgar that he will defend the Hall of Heorot against the monster Grendel. Beowulf spent his life helping the kingdom his father had also once served. Beowulf showed heroism by keeping his oath and killing the beast. He was a hero who had kept his honor between his king and his warriors. …show more content…

Grendel posed a threat to the king and the people of the Hall of Heorot by terrorizing the kingdom and massacring the people. Prior to the death of Grendel, many warriors also showed Comitatus by attempting to kill Grendel in order to protect their king but had failed. Due to all the mishap that Grendel had caused, Beowulf pledged an oath to the king to vanquish Grendel. Grendel’s mother was also a threat to the king and his people by killing in vengeance for the death of her son. “A dagger, brown with dried blood, and prepared To avenge her only son” (501-502). She was illustrated more as a human character since she reacted exactly how any human mother would react if their child died or was in any kind of danger or harm.
