High power could be given to one at any time desired. Loyalty was an attribute Beowulf held throughout his life. Beowulf lived to strengthen and to care for the tribe. Beowulf could become a king, but instead of battling and betraying a friend, he chose to be righteous and loyal. Rather, Beowulf was happy to be able to give his loyal duties to Hrothgar. Beowulf stood out from others due to his extraordinary loyalty to his king. He protected the king at all cost even if it meant giving up his own life. Beowulf swore to King Hrothgar that he will defend the Hall of Heorot against the monster Grendel. Beowulf spent his life helping the kingdom his father had also once served. Grendel posed a threat to the king and the people of the Hall of Heorot by terrorizing the kingdom and massacring the people. Prior to the death of Grendel, many warriors also showed Comitatus by attempting to kill Grendel in order to protect their king but had failed. Due to all the mishap that Grendel had caused, Beowulf pledged an oath to the king to vanquish Grendel. Grendel’s mother was also a threat to the king and his people by killing in vengeance for the death of her son. “A dagger, brown with dried blood, and prepared To avenge her only son” (501-502). She was illustrated more as a human character since she reacted exactly how any human mother would react if their child died or was in any kind of danger or harm. Beowulf and his warriors went to Grendel’s mother's lair in a cold and murky lake where Beowulf decapitates her with a magical sword in the
After Grendel goes back to his home he dies shortly. His mother furious seeked revenge on the man who killed her son. Grendel’s mother went to the mead hall one night and killed Hrothgar’s closest friend. Hrothgar eager to get rid of this monster calls once more upon Beowulf. Beowulf gears up in a mail shirt, his sword, and his helmet and heads to the Lake where the monster lives. He dives in the lake and is clutched by the monster. The monster trying to dig her claws into him couldn’t harm him. She then carried him sword and all to her home. She carried him to her home and there the battled in someone’s battle hall with monsters surrounding and attacking at Beowulf, but couldn’t harm him. Beowulf swung his sword at the monster but couldn’t cut her skin. Later in the battle he was running out of options then he saw a heavy sword on the wall hammered by the giants and cursed by their magic. He drew it up and took a swing with all the strength he had left. The sword cut through her skin, broke bones, and the monster fell to the
In lines 1251-1650 in Beowulf, the story focuses on Beowulf's encounter with Grendel's mother after he defeats Grendel. In this section of the poem, Beowulf enters the underwater cave to engage in a battle against Grendel’s mother, which he is overpowered and nearly defeated. Throughout this episode, the perception of female characters in Beowulf is complex because Grendel's mother is portrayed as a powerful and fearsome opponent, in contrast to traditional gender roles and
Beowulf, is an epic hero who battles Grendel, a demon, Grendel's mother, and a fire breathing dragon. His boast and encounters reveal him the strongest warrior around. He is known for his characteristics of Anglo Saxons code of honor including bravery, strength, and loyalty.

When Grendel's mother arrives to torment the Danes, seeking vengeance for her son’s death, Beowulf’s fight with Grendel's mother
Grendel's mother- Upon research, Anglo-Saxon women were peacemakers. His mother is the complete opposite of this, as she is highly vicious and wishes for revenge on Beowulf because of the death of her son. She wants to regain his glory and get his arm back as some sort of trophy. She holds quite a grudge, which is frowned upon with Anglo-Saxon women.
The other leading heroic trait that Beowulf possesses is loyalty. The Anglo-Saxon warriors believe in the idea of comitatus, which are the faithful and unbreakable bonds between his king and his warriors. Throughout the story, Beowulf had shown devotions to both his leader and his followers. As mentioned earlier, Beowulf easily passed all the treasure to his uncle noting that “since every benefit I have ever received I owe to you, my closest and kindest kinsman on earth." (Chapter 31).He shows great gratitude to his king by presenting all of his treasures that he had gained. He was then portrayed to be “loyal and true and loved him dearly,” (Chapter 31). Additionally, not only he is committed to his rulers, Beowulf is also loyal to his followers. As described by Wiglaf, one of his most faithful men, “Our ancient king often gave us---heroes while in hall!---helmets and mailcoats, the finest treasures he could find for his men anywhere on earth, armor like the brilliant well-wrought war-gear you are
Loyalty and reputation are only two major themes seen in Beowulf that can connect to today’s humanity. They are a big aspect of our lives as well as it was for Beowulf. Loyalty is something everyone looks for in a person. If that loyalty is not there then there isn’t a solid base for a relationship whether it be in a work environment or in any environment. A good reputation is searched for by almost everyone.
Grendel’s mother killed these people for a very human reason, maternal grief. When a woman grows a child inside her for she grows strongly attached to the child. Just as every mother loves her children, Grendel’s mother killed out of vengeance and grief for her dead son. “Grendel's mother embodies the theme of revenge as she buries her grief in an assault on Heorot. Again, the Beowulf poet reminds us that she is a descendant of Cain; but there is something very human about her motivation,” She took the arm of Grendel wanting to keep every part of her son.
Grendel’s Mother is a “monstrous hell bride” (1258) who plays the masculine role of a warrior. Though she is characterized as an outcast, she embodies the human elements of a mother. She cared for her son and now, “she has taken up the feud because of last night when [Beowulf] killed Grendel and racked him in ruinous combat” (1333-35). Grendel intends to avenge her son’s death, so she surpasses her boundaries, to Heorot hall and attacks the Danes. Grendel’s Mother’s actions oppose those of Wealhtheow and Hildebrush because they concede to confinement and submissiveness, while Grendel’s Mother fights.
Loyalty and courage are two themes that emerge throughout the poem ‘Beowulf by Seamus Heaney’. With a focus on an extract in Beowulf, this essay will explore how Seamus Heaney shows the themes loyalty and courage through the use of diction and imagery.
In Singh’s words, “Had it not been for Beowulf killing her son, Grendel’s mother would never have presented herself in a violent manner to the soldiers. Her attack is a direct result and avenging of Grendel’s death.” The people of Heorot were ignorant of her for her peaceful nature, had it not been for Grendel attacking, neither one of them would have even had a name. Grendel’s mother was grieving the loss of her son but she stepped up and took a role, which is typically saved for the males, to take revenge. “Grendel’s mother also takes on the role of male nobility in that she, not Grendel, is the ruler of her realm, the mere” as revealed by Harris. Here she takes another “masculine” stereotype as
She had him restrained the hero was helpless. She finally had her chance for revenge. She reached for her old blunted dagger and slammed it into Beowulf using all of her strength. However, nothing happened. The blade was dull and old and Beowulf's mail shirt kept the knife from entering. He leaped from her evil grasp and reached for the hilt of a sword. The hero heaved the sword over his head and swung with all of his might. The loud swing of the sword was the last thing Grendel's mother
“She welcomed him in her claws clutched at him savagely but could not harm him.” (60) Her attack upon Beowulf was unsuccessful. Beowulf’s barbaric actions were too much for Grendel’s mother to handle. Beowulf came back twice as hard as her. “ …and swung his sword, his ringed-marked blade, straight at her head.”
Grendel’s mother is a swamp-hag who lives in a desolate lake. She comes to Heorot seeking revenge for her son’s death. She murders Aeschere, who is one of the king’s best friends and most-trusted advisers. After murdering him, she sinks back down into the lake to return to her house. Beowulf decides to pursue her into the lake to fight her in the underwater house. Beowulf kills her with a sword that was made for a giant. After killing her, he discovers Grendel's body in her underwater house. He cuts off Grendel's head and brings it back to the king as another prize to hang in the mead-hall as a
