Good and evil go side by side, one cannot exist without the other. What is good and evil? To be good is defined by producing moral and good things into the world. While being evil is defined as producing wickedness and immoral acts in the world. People can be good and evil as well. However what is failed to be known is if people are naturally good or naturally evil. This article will discuss the possibilities of good people turning evil, the Lucifer effect, and how to stop the transformation of evil.

How good people turn bad can be extremely debatable. One explanation is the Lucifer effect. The Lucifer effect is a reasoning or pattern of how a bad situation can turn a good person bad. Smith defines the Lucifer effect as an extended argument for the situational outlook on human behavior, especially when used to explain why people do evil and immoral things (2008). Phillip Zimbardo founded the Lucifer effect after his study with students, known famously as the Stanford prison study. Other situations that turn people, other than the one previously mentioned could be based on obedience to authority. One example of this is the Stanley Milgram study where average people participated in a study and found that majority of the people showed respect to authority to the point where they were willing to kill another human being (Cash, 2012). Robin Snell, conducted another study about obedience to authority and found that by request of a boss or superior authority to do something ethically wrong, most people would or did agree to do it (Snell, 1999). This shows that situations that let people obtain a lot of power can be potentially dangerous at turning themselves and others evil or convincing people to do evil
