Through all the readings that she had possessed she had become, what was the start of, an independent woman. The fact that she continued to read to further her knowledge and to learn more did not faze her that not many other women were doing as she was. At a young age she knew that “settling” with the roles of women during this time was a life that she had to choose but she also wanted more. As I was reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling, I was comparing the events that happened in Harry Potter to the book, Matilda by Roald Dahl. Matilda is about a girl who lives with her cruel parents but realizes she has power and uses that to defend herself from them. In the book Harry Potter, Harry is forced to live with his mean aunt and uncle after his parents die, and he realizes has the power to defend himself from his family. I noticed lots of similarities but also some differences. For example, some of the similarities are the theme of “family” and “power”, the main character runs into an evil character/s, and finally where most of the problems happen are at school or at their house. There are also some differences that I found as I was reading.

Cornelia Funke is by far one of the most accessible authors I have ever encountered. In a time of social media and instant gratification, she is ever inclined to remain connected with her audience. In thanks to Funke’s open nature, research was quite manageable. Between her website, her own involvement with answering fan inquiries on the website, GoodReads, as well as an abundance of interviews, I can see another reason why it may be relevant to consider her the German J.K Rowling, though I do prefer to think of her as her own entity of greatness without the comparisons.

A main rhetorical device that appears throughout the entire Harry Potter series is symbolism. There are many names and items that stand for something else and many are introduced in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. First, Harry’s scar represents the true love parents have for their children and how they are willing to do anything, including being killed, in order to save them. Next, the Mirror of Erised shows a person their truest desires and everything he or she would want in life. Thirdly, each wizard’s wand is representative of his or her character and personality and if the improper one is used, terrible events will occur. Finally, the names of the founders of the four Hogwarts Houses are symbols of the core beliefs and values of each.
