The Main Arguments For Raising The Driving Age

According to the CDC "the crash rate per mile driven is 3 times higher for 16-17 year olds as compared to 18-19 year olds." Because of the high amount of accidents that happen among young teenagers many have suggested raising the driving age to eighteen rather than sixteen which is the current driving age. The main argument for raising the driving age is that sixteen-seventeen year olds are too immature to be good drivers, but maturity is not the only factor when it comes to making good decisions on the road. The legal driving age should remain at sixteen because it is experience that makes a good driver, and the freedom that comes with driving allows teeagers to become independant people.

The argument that teenagers are too immature to be good drivers doesnt have any solid evidence to support it. Some say that the statistics about teenage accident rates are proof enough for this argument but other factors are involved. If the driving age were to be raised it would make teenagers reliant on their parents until they graduate highschool and are expected to live on their own. Having a drivers license at sixteen or seventeen allows teenagers to depend on themselves for transportation. It also makes it easier to have a job and begin to look after their own schedules. This is not only liberating for teenagers, but an essential step in preparing people for adulthood. Raising the the driving age to 18 would make this nearly impossible. Rather than having the ability to gradually become more responsible, kids would be forced to remain dependant on their parents until the very moment they legally become adults.Taking on this huge transition all at once with no experience could be disastrous for the futures of young
