"Of the people, by the people, for the people." This quote from Abraham Lincoln perfectly touches upon the essence of democracies. In this essay, I will describe the different types and aspects, as well as the components of a democratic political system. Then, I will explain how they can be undermined through the abuse of power, money, inequality, and, of course, the media. The purpose of this list is not to be exhaustive, but for the sake of this essay, I will limit myself to the above.

The term "Democracy" comes from the Greek language, and means "ruled by the people". The quote I started this essay with, from Abraham Lincoln, comes from the idea that the power is vested in the people, and is either exercised directly by them (a direct democracy, as seen in the Athenian model, or Switzerland), or by a person of their election. Democracy is associated with liberal ideas, and stands for political liberty and/or freedom, which we see in the enforcement of speech and the right to vote. A liberal democracy is a democracy where the people are represented by an elected candidate of their choice, where their individuality and property is protected, as well as their equality, rights and freedom. In contrast, an illiberal democracy has few, insubstantial or no limits to the power of the elected (such as in the Republic of Singapore). There are three main systems of democracy.
