Throughout the colonial period, what were the factors that hindered or promoted a sense of national identity? At what point did nationalism become a major influence and why?
The making of America; many factors that promoted the national identity began with the very first colonist that came to North America. In our primary text, it describes around the late 17th century the British Government established a board to govern the trade of the kingdom. Its purpose was to manage the colonies and plantations around America and other locations (Reich, 2011, p. 104). Furthermore once this was established colonies became more decentralized and began to govern themselves, slowly becoming Americanized, setting the stage for revolution. Many of

264) (Brinkley, 2010, pg. 101-103). Until the battles of Lexington and Concord took place did Americans relies that independence was in reach. Discuss the extent to which African-Americans were able to develop a separate sense of community during the colonial period. Provide specific examples from your reading.
The African American experience is one that I can only imagine, a circumstance that is not possible to comprehend. This transition was from servants to slavery that was in direct correlation to the shortage of labor in America (Brinkley, 2010, p.64). This shortage was evident at the first moments of colonization and the demand for workers in North America helped spur the trade of goods as well as the slave trade. One point is clear the African slave was a strong individual that was capable of any task given, even looking back centuries before the colonization of North America, you will find slaves accompanying the Spanish and French explorations (Nash, 2010, p. 144). The segregation and separation of the African culture is very evident within the colonies in where each group developed as part of their original depending on where they were form in Africa (Reich, 2011, p. 122). The variance of slavery is difficult to pinpoint and has many factors that influence within each set or group of slaves and the codes that were developed carried throughout each generation (Reich, 2011, p. 123). The level of
Today America is one of the wealthiest, strongest, and hardworking countries in the world. It has population of over three hundred million and growth rate of 0.97% annually. America as a nation is known to have done many great contributions to the world such as: the idea of presidency, inventing telephone, discovering electricity, inventing planes, the first nation to put a man on moon, and many more. America has grown and multiplied over time and it is still increasing. Even though today America stands out apart from other countries, it was built from nothing but scrap.
In America, the lives of Africans did not get any easier. Once the demand for labor began increasing dramatically, more and more Africans were imported to America. Originally, white people and black people worked together in the plantations. As a result of the increase in Africans in these British colonies, less white people took jobs on plantations. Eventually, enslavement became based on race. Numerous slave codes were developed, which included denying slaves the right to be out past sunset and denying slaves the right to meet in groups of three or more. These Africans forced to live enslaved in America were treated as if they were inferior to white people. It is discouraging to think about the fact that this country, though it was long ago, once accepted this kind of social injustice.
When America was first founded the colonists believed that they could do one of two things. They could either ask for entire families and groups of people to come over from England to start family farms and businesses to help the colony prosper. The
The physical side is at one time they did love each other because kids were born. The shared activities are the fact they have children and they still do things as a family.
Explain the four major types of British colonial communities that developed by the middle of the 18th century. Talk about the economic, political, and social characteristics that made each community that made each community unique.
Much credit was given to six men, for creating the foundation of America. The first 4
America. The greatest country. The strongest country. The one country most people want to live in. The country that provides help for the ones in need and free education for everybody. America has lived up to the ideals in the Declaration of Independence such as democracy, opportunity, but most importantly, liberty. In America, we are all born with liberty or as others call it, “rights.”
2. How did the colonists’ relationship with England affect the development of the colonies into an independent nation?
Alan Taylor writes, “The Founding Fathers-the politicians who led colonial assemblies and congresses-did not distinguish themselves with self-discipline. [During the boycott of English goods to protest colonial restriction], Thomas Jefferson imported British glass windows for his mansion at Monticello.”(Taylor 53) This is one example of the contradicting era of cultural development in 18th century America: the continuation of closeness to England, and the steady distancing of the American colonists from the British. For the majority of the 18th century, colonial America sprouted shocking ideas of the power of the individual through events like the Great Awakening and Enlightenment, and the emergence of parties such as the Whigs. Meanwhile, they continued to hold close ties to their mother country through imitative actions caused by the mercantilist policies controlling trade and taxes. Although mercantilism imposed by the British brought the colonies and England closer, the ideas of individual liberty and choice that arose in pre-Revolutionary America including the Great Awakening, Enlightenment, and Whig ideologies divided them. These conflicting movements led to an era of dynamic cultural growth in which the colonies both grew closer and further apart from Britain.
In 1607 the British began to colonize North America. Britain enforce certain rules, such as the colonies could only trade with its mother country, to make sure that it was the only country benefiting for the colonies. However there was a period of Salutary Neglect. “Salutary neglect was Britain's unofficial policy to relax the enforcement of strict regulations, particularly trade laws, imposed on the American colonies late in the seventeenth and early in the eighteenth centuries” (Henretta). In this duration of time the colonies began to establish their own trade routes, politics, and procedures which helped form their sense of nationalism.
*Discuss the various ways in which domestic political affairs in Britain affected colonization in the New World.
The American citizens who suffers from poverty did not have the choice to be or not to be in their situation so they suffered greatly since they were not given equal opportunity's as the rest of America. People might have thought that these people on the streets are just lazy people who never gave a damn in their lives and did not want to work for their necessities. But Michal Harrington knew the real reason why this so called "Other America" was the way they were, " But the real explanation of why the poor are where they are is that they made the mistake of being born to the wrong parents, in the wrong section of the country, in the wrong industry, or in the wrong racial or ethnic group ... [so] most of them would never even had had a chance to get out of the other America" (The Other
The world struggled long and hard to achieve what it has today, countless war and civilizations declining one after another. The United States of America is a nation combined and influenced by other successful civilization. The success and wonder of America and the world simply would not be the same if it weren’t for two of the most revered and influential civilization, the Roman Empire and Athens Greece. Both were well ahead of their time in terms of invention, studies, and ideas. The United States of America owes its thanks to both of these nation; our laws, government, scientific understanding, and continued advancement in technology all started from them. Athens Greece impacted us in a broader and much more significant sense because it
The African American experience is one that is quite different from other racial/ ethnic groups. The majority of the first African American came over, unwillingly, on ships from various African countries. They were brought to America by white, European settlers to be used as slaves in an order to plant and harvest their crops and make money for the white man. This racial group was treated as if they were property and not people. However, with the ending of the American Civil War, African Americans gained freedom, freedom that not all white American were quite ready to handle. After gaining their freedom came the need for education, jobs and suffrage rights. Now in America this racial group has come a long way, having elected its first African American present for two terms, yet still there are many issues that are very prevalent. This racial group has been fighting their way to equality since the birth of this nation. African Americans have experienced an array of conflict, violence, stereotypes, prejudice acts, and discrimination against them throughout their history in America.
United States, 2006: a nation with a history of a mere 230 years, yet it stands as one of the most powerful nations in the world. Yet many of us know little about the history and cultural changes that led to the birth of this nation. We only know the bits and pieces that are taught as we sit daydreaming in our fifth grade classroom. The Puritans, the Pilgrims, Christopher Columbus, the Mayflower, we know about these people and things, yet what aspects of their lives created the change in America? The answer to this question can be found by observing the changes in religion, women's role, and colonial law as it brought about the change in the Puritan's cultural values.
