The poem is about silent desperation, it shows how people can be helpless when they can’t say what is on their minds. It is about 3 people waiting at the bus stop while they are quietly fading away in 3 different ways. Each of them wishes to say something to the other so that they can warn them that they are in danger but no one can, they are trapped in their own suffering. The whole poem could be seen as a metaphor, because so many things happen that would probably never happen in a real life situation. For example, “with blocks of ice on her feet”. The scenario in the poem is very serious it is filled with sorrow and vulnerability. All 3 people fail to tell one another that they are dying it symbolizes the way people tend to stand back and watch while they should be intruding. The poem is an allegory all the characters have a meaning. The deeper meaning of this poem is how everyone has troubles. The world is full of people who have problems and when you think you have issues, the next person is even worse, just like the 3 characters in the poem. For example, The man on fire, “Flames are peeking out from beneath his collar and cuffs.” It could be a symbol for people who are burning up inside because their troubles are eating away at them. This part of the poem anticipates the reader that the man that is waiting for the bus could be ang about something and perhaps that is why there are flames coming out from beneath his collar and cuffs. The poem is trying to use ‘imagery’ to make the readers create an image in their brain. Denver Butson creates an image by relating the man’s anger to fire, relating the woman’s feelings of sorrow to water, and relating the second woman’s fierceness to ice.
