The Manicure - A Psycho-social Experience
There’s nothing like Strawberry Champagne or Park Avenue Orchids to let the world know that you want to have fun. Peppermint and Funshine Pink exude youthful innocence while Chinese Red is downright sexy. Black Cherry adds a bit of serious sophistication to an already irresistible demeanor. And for those more mellow moods, Grand Canyon Sunset and Beach Blanket Mauve are sure to have a soothing impact.
It’s true. Nail color can mirror the inner feelings and emotions of the person wearing it. In fact, there is an entire psychological dimension to nails—mental health being a primary reason why people get manicures. Few people will admit to getting their nails done solely for hygienic

The nails were also polished, along with the tips of the fingers, with red lac-dye. Henna leaves were used for this same purpose and are still used in India and Pakistan for traditional customs such as weddings. The Chinese and Japanese also colored their nails during the Middle Ages.
The evolution of nail products in the West occurred much later. This is possibly because women wore gloves most of the time, and thus their hands were always hidden. It was in the post-Victorian era that attention was given to enhancing the beauty of the hands and fingers. In the early 1900s, women of the Western world discovered a new phenomenon—polishing the nails. Beauty experts of the time stated that because nails were apt to be a “trifle pale” they could be touched with rose to call attention to their slenderness.
Along with facial creams, rouges, lipsticks, and other popular cosmetics of the time, women also invested money in polishing pastes, powders, or sticks. In 1903, Polpasta Polishing Paste was available for 25 cents and claimed to serve as a brilliant polish and a cure for hard nails and callous cuticles. At its heels came French Polishing Powder, which was available in cake form. When rubbed onto the nails, this powder gave them a long-lasting look of transparency. Many women preferred to have a transparent polish, which simply gave the nails brilliance and

To create stiletto nails, acrylic is generally used over gels. This is because, as well as being durable and hard, acrylics are controllable. This makes them ideal for creating shapes, like stiletto nails. Nail technicians form sculpts using acrylics to create a precision pointed tip. This tip resembles a stiletto heel.
Cosmetics and bathing in the medieval ages weren’t like what we have today. We have blush and shampoo and mascara, our ancestors in the medieval ages didn’t have these luxuries. For makeup, they used lead glaze because it “was practical to clean and looked beautiful”. Lead, it turns out, is very poisonous and can affect your intelligence and overall health, so most people slowly died from poison. Men used women’s cosmetics to stave off old appearance, unlike us, who use hair dye.
Have you ever thought about who created makeup? Or how it was created? When, where and how? Why was it created? How has it changed over time? Has it affected anyone? Well I’m going to tell you some of it. Make up wasn’t just created by powder or anything small and simple like that, no. Makeup actually has a lot of its own differences. In 180 BCE was when makeup had first had started but it wasn’t commonly used as much as then. People would limit the use of makeup because it was so expensive and hard to get and or find. The women who actually had it or used it were the prostitutes and the wealthier women. The “Cheap Knockoff’s” were the ones who were sold to the poorer women. The people didn’t really care if the slaves used makeup but
Cosmetics: In 1909 Gordon Selfridge had opened the first cosmetics counter to allow women to ‘try before you buy.’ By the 1920s, every pharmacy and department store in the world included makeup counters. The previous stigma attached to makeup was gone and women felt at ease scrutinizing the latest powders, vanishing creams, pan sticks, lipsticks and mascaras (or mascaros as they were known in the 1920s).
The strong smell in the air. The sound of a air filter. The wild and calm colors of nail polish you see on the tables and shelves. The feeling of helping a girl feel like she’s a queen. The passion to do good and help a girl get stuff off of her shoulder and give advice. These are the reasons I choose to be a Nail Technician. Currently I am a senior in high school, in the Nail-Tech program. Through this program, that I found my love for doing nails and helping people. Being a Nail Technician suits my ESFP personality, such as love being around people, being a practical worker and being easy to communicate with.
The ad for Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Fast Dry Nail Color caught my eye because it uses an intriguing analogous color scheme, of magenta and deep purple. The ad shows a female’s hand with nails that have shiny flashy fuchsia polish and she seems to be buckling her shoe. She has on a flirty peep-toe purple heel and has uptempo purple nail polish on her toenails. The ad captives the reader with its catch line of “Nail Color Newsflash. One Stroke. One Coat. Done.” This slogan explains that with one stroke of the brush that one will have full coverage of the nail polish on your nail. The ad also says that one coat, which means that with one coat ones nail with be fully covered with nail polish. The ad also gives in more details of the advantages of the Nail Color, such as the one-stroke application, one-coat coverage, and that it dries in just 60 seconds. The ad shows the twenty- four shades of nail colors for this brand. This is one of the many products made by Sally Hansen.
The idea of cosmetology and beauty was commenced by ancient tribal hunters. It is believed that they would smear ash under their eyes and use animal urine to alter their smell. This is where the idea of eyeliner and perfume originated (Schurman). Around the world cosmetology is being introduced like Egypt is suggested to be one of the most ancient culture that associates with cosmetics. Make up to them was really significant especially to the royal egyptians. Their idea of eyeliner was made up of lead, ash and mercury. The use of this eyeliner helped reduce glare, prevent any type of infection, and mostly to make their eyes beautiful (Schurman). Now the Chinese ancient culture had mixtures of natural ingredients to produce stimulating nail polish. The nail polish to these people were sign of wealth (Murphy). In ancient Rome and Greece those who could afford it would receive baths in lotions. They wore perfume, face powder, blush, eyeliner, and lipstick. During this period it was discovered that oils, lotions, and animal fat have beautification properties (Schurman).
In the New York Times articles, “The price of the nice nails,” and “Perfect nails, Poisoned workers” by Nir the NYtimes journalist (2015) describes how the manicurists of NYC are being exploited by their employers, underpaid and bear ethnic prejudice due to lack of legal investigation. The manicurists are subject to work in poor health and safety conditions meanwhile the owner enjoys the luxuries of profitable sums by wage exploitations. The average cost to do manicure is roughly $10.50. Therefore, the workers are underpaid and are always under tremendous pressure to complete the task quickly. In addition to that ethnic discrimination plays the vital toxic role where certain race dictates the fate of the others. The law enforcement has done the bare minimum to investigate the nail salons and the employers are rarely prosecuted for labor violations.

Cosmetology is a very artistic career. Cosmetology is the study and application and the beauty treatment. Branches of specialty ranges anywhere between hairstyling, skin care, cosmetics, manicures/pedicures and electrology. A person that is employed in this career would cut, style, dye and wash their clients hair the way that the client wants it. Plus, they have the skills to do professional manicures and pedicures with a special design if that is what the client wants.

The white lead continued to be used as a foundation to achieve pale skin but it was done more naturally and secretly and women pinched their cheeks and bit their lips to get a rosy natural look. The idea was to look like you weren’t wearing any makeup at all.
