Theme Essay Have you ever done something that hard work pays off? Well in the story “The Marble Champ” By Gary Soto, Lupe is having a tough time practicing for marbles at the start the of the story. I can relate to that because I had a tough time playing horseshoes when I was little. Lupe felt good about herself because she believed in herself. To add on to that, “I can be good at marbles” she told herself. In addition to being good at playing marbles, she also squeezed an eraser for 4 hours to make her thumb stronger. She is probably really good at thumb wars. Lupe achieved your goal by doing several things. To begin with, she practices every day. Also, she recognized that she lacked confidence by telling herself,“ I’ll never be good
In his fiction “Cutting for Stone”, Dr. Abraham Verghese presents a story of Marion and Shiva Stone, conjoined twins who are separated at birth by their presumed surgeon father, Dr. Thomas Stone. The twins were orphaned almost immediately after they were born. Their mother, Sister Mary Joseph Praise, an Indian nurse nun at Missing Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Dr. Thomas Stone’s perfect surgical assistant, dies from uterine rupture during the childbirth. Their presumed father, being shocked by the catastrophic death of his loved one, leaves the twins to two of his colleagues, Dr. Kalpana Hemlatha and Dr. Ahbi Ghosh, who
Lupe's first love was the Colonel who was fighting in the Revolution. Everyone in the box canyon believed that the Colonel would steal their gold mine and give it to the Americans. Lupe loved this man with all her heart and couldn't believe that anyone thought he would do such a thing to hurt the people of Mexico. And Dona Guadalupe had to tell her that her first loyalty should be to her family and it didn't revolve around the man you love. The goal of both families was to one day see their children be married and have children of their own.
The first way they stay determined and work hard throughout the story is they both stay determined. Lupe stays determined in one way because she is determined to win the championship and secondly, she stays determined
Baker instills persistence into Holling, allowing him to exceed any limits or constraints put on him. In March, Holling learns that he is required to try out for the cross country team, but at this point, he is unaware of his talent. However, Mrs. Baker, being a medalist in running, teaches Holling to “run like Jesse Owens, who won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympics,” giving the reader as assumption that such a grand title would surely motivate Holling (Schmidt). Mrs. Baker taught Holling that running not only involves good form, but determination, and a willingness to push forward and strive. Preparing for a big meet, Holling was training vigorously to use technique, and to compete passionately, and “that night [he] ran like Jesse Owens through the dark March streets. Leaning forward. Arms and legs like pistons. Head straight and still. Hands loose. Breathing controlled” (Schmidt). Holling utilized what was taught to him and used it as motivation to push forward and exceed any limitation imposed on him. The limitations here are public opinions, or someone judging a person based on their appearance, intelligence, etc. Similarly, the eighth graders bullied Holling and the younger seventh graders which made them feel inferior and unable to be better than what they are, which with Mrs. Baker’s help, urges Holling to work harder, using what he learns from his teacher. Essentially, Mrs. Baker successfully teaches Holling to run like a champion, but
The story ´´The Marble Champ´´ shows this because when Lupe was in the marbles competition it says everybody was easy to beat because she had practiced so hard. Furthermore, after the first time Lupe practiced it got easier every time.´´Practice, practice, practice, squeeze, squeeze, squeeze. Lupe got better...´´ This evidence shows, that after hard work things can get easier as you go along. I think Lupe realized this after she played at the marbles championship because everybody she played against was easily beat for her. And she realized this after she beat Alfonso, the neighborhood champ, she also realized that things can get easier after she practiced a few days and she got better and better. Therefore, marbles got easier for her every time she did it. She learned that her hard work payed
Lupe Algarin is a very interesting person In the setting of lupe’s house she says that she doesn’t fit in her own house. The author uses direct characterization by having Lupe saying.
The most obvious reason why lupe is determined to her goals is that she is smart, because she always practice and studies that’s why she won so many awards. If I ever got a test I would totally study for a test or quiz. That’s not the only evidence why lupe is smart is that she also had a plan to get better at marbles, Lupe also listen to good advice she blocked out bad advice that would make her feel bad for herself and struggle. If I ever got bad advice I tell my mom or dad
In Cutting for Stone Thomas Stone asks, “What treatment in an emergency is administrated by ear?” The correct answer is “Words of comfort.” Just this one statement encapsulates the books surprising take on medicine this question also reminds me of experiences I have had with doctors and hospitals. I will be discussing these topics along with how Cutting for Stone tells us about the roles of compassion, faith, and hop in medicine.
One reason why I think Lupe is a good role model is because she is very intelligent. As proof, Lupe’s academic grades are straight A’s. This shows that Lupe is intelligent because not many people get straight A’s on their report card every year of school. Secondly, Lupe is intelligent because she has won multiple awards. For example, Lupe won the school spelling bee, she won the blue ribbon award in the science fair, she was the winner of a reading contest at the library three summers in a row, she was also the top student in her piano recital, and she was the playground champion of chess. Talk about a ton of awards, right? Lupe feels like none of these awards mean anything though. Lupe wishes she could win some type of award in athletics, so that she can keep up with the other girls in her school, that’s why Lupe is working towards her goal of being the marble champion. Also, in one case in the story, when Lupe was playing marbles on her bed, she figured out that her bedspread was slowing down the marbles as she shot them. This
Lee used imagery such as “old nose-to-the-grindstone” to convey the responsibility of their work. Lee also utilized imagery of a baseball game during the afternoon to further distinguish the importance of sports for example “Throws a ball so as to curve in a way which a few years ago was thought to be impossible”, “hits it with a round stick”, and “runs as fast as he can and catches it”. This in turn strengthens the author’s tone because of his utilization of imagery shows the work that goes into the game.
Determination is all over but most don't reach for it. In The Marble Champ by Gary Soto the protagonist Lupe is an extremely intelligent girl who is severely un-athletic. The story is about her quest for athletic glory. She ends up trying marbles and becoming a champ. Lupe is determined.
The first reason why I think the theme of the story is determination is key, is because Lupe didn’t give up. First, Lupe Medrano practiced for hours! Even if she wasn't good in the beginning, she still tried. One thing she did to get better was squeezing an eraser. Lupe squeezed and squeezed an eraser for hours just to get her thumb stronger to flick the marble. She was persistent, even if it was painful. Also, in the middle of the story, it was a rainy day outside and she couldn’t go outside and practice. But, Lupe still found ways to get better bit by bit even inside. She spread out a bedsheet and flicked the marbles Being determined will get you far and you might learn some things. This shows that never giving up is a good reason for determined is key .
If I were to be in the DJ booth thinking about how I messed up the same song transition last night, chances are that I’m going to overthink it and mess up again. Even worse, before I even started booking shows, many of the venues wouldn’t let me play because they didn’t think I was good enough. Using the power of endurance I kept trying and trying and finally they saw how strong my perseverance was and started booking me for shows. The most important thing is to endure by enduring: understanding the difficulties, enduring the hardships, predicting the risks, and tolerating the abuse, all ensure fame and success for such a person. What makes one truly great is knowing how to tolerate the intolerable and how to endure the unendurable. “Everyone knows how to thrive in the good times. It is the trying times that separate the one who has substance from the one who merely possesses the image” (Chu 141).
The first reason Lupe is determined is because she works hard. For example in the story Lupe works hard by practicing for three hours straight. This shows that Lupe works hard by practicing for long periods of time and setting aside school work to practice and do her best. This shows Lupe works hard and does her best because she really wants to win and be good at some kind of sport or activity. This supports my claim that Lupe is determined. Another example is Lupe beat her brother when they played their own game. This shows that Lupe has been working extremely hard because the story
I did this project because I wanted to know what viscosity was. Also I wanted to know how to measure it. Viscosity is the thickness of a liquid, and also what makes a liquid flow slower or faster. For example milk and honey. Honey would be thicker than milk so the honey would flow slower than the milk.
