The Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site

The Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History is an institution that authentically depicts the journey of not only Black Americans, but the United States as a whole. From ancient beginnings in Nabta Playa to today’s influential Black innovators, this museum provides realistic recreations of both the plights and triumphs of African Americans through their “And Still We Rise” exhibit.

The Jefferson Davis Historic Site and Monument is located in Fairview, KY. It is 351 ft. tall, making it the fifth tallest monument in the world (coming after the Gateway arch, the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Crazy Horse memorial, It was originally planned by Ret. Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner, Sr. in 1902. Construction began in 1917, but was forced to a halt in 1918 when the second world war started and the materials were rationed for the war cause. It resumed in 1922 and was completed in 1924. The total cost of the monument was $200,000. The monument was originally built with a staircase inside leading directly to the top, but they were replaced when an elevator was installed in 1929.

Epic heroes are commemorated as being someone who commits improbable feats. They aren’t superior, but they oblige to deeds they feel are right. Non-oblivious to the horrid racism going on around him growing up, Martin Luther King Jr. alleviated and dedicated most of his life to what he could change as an adult: segregation. Martin Luther King Jr. embodies the characteristics of an epic hero because he was competent of great deeds, he signified humility, and possessed supernatural help.

The world was a different place—African Americans were discriminated against to an extent where they did not have any civil rights like the millions of other Americans. Bathrooms were segregated, blacks could only sit on the back of the bus, jobs were unattainable at many stores and restaurants because of the color of their skin, and ultimately the black community really had no place within the community as a whole. Without leadership the black community was lost. They necessity for a leader to stand up and not be afraid of the consequences was grave. Police brutally beat blacks, killed them, put them in jail, and the list goes on. The sense of unsafety took over the black community, and for a long time all they had were each other. Standing up for themselves many times would cost them their lives. On January 15th, 1929, a man was born who would change the viewpoints of millions and leave his name forever remembered. As we celebrate Martin Luther King Day and Black History Month, Blacks have made huge strides although coming from a past of inequality. I wasn’t particularly interested in seeing Selma because I knew what it represented. I feared to cry and get emotional over the hardships of post-slavery and the battles of the Civil Rights Movement. I knew it was going to be gruesome to watch because of its vivid depiction of how our nation used to be and a touch of reality of how it continues to become.

The museum that I decided to visit was the California African American museum, located in the Exposition park by the Coliseum and USC school. I knew that by visiting this museum, I would learn more about African American culture and lifestyle, which I thought it would be interesting to learn about another culture. What, I expected to see there was African American’s art creation, music, maybe see a few things about their old lifestyle, and the difficulty they once had to face.
