Maleficent VS Sleeping Beauty
Throughout many years fairy tales have changed from warnings and nightmares to life goals and bedtime stories. The movie Maleficent is a modern day retelling for the story Sleeping Beauty. In Maleficent there is a fairy named Maleficent who falls in love with a boy who later breaks her heart and has a baby with another woman. When Maleficent finds out he has had a child, she curses the baby girl so she will prick her finger on her 16th birthday, causing her to fall into a death-like sleep that only true love’s kiss will wake her from. Maleficent sneakily watches over the child until her 16th birthday and loves her like her own child. When the 16 year old girl pricks her finger the kiss from her prince does not wake her, but Maleficent’s kiss goodbye does. In the movie a lot of special effects are used when Maleficent is using magic or flying, and it is also used when the other magical creatures are in any scene. The music used throughout the movie sets the tone of what is happening and shows emotion. Many of the costumes used are similar to Disney’s movie of Sleeping Beauty like Maleficent’s all black outfit and horns. The movie Maleficent is a good retelling of the story Sleeping Beauty because of the special effects, music, and costumes used within the film.
Special effects play a large role in movies now a days to better the quality and understanding of the movie. In Maleficent special effects are used greatly when Maleficent is flying. When
The Original 1991 Beauty and the Beast movie has many symbols. One of them is Lumière the candle holder. In about half way through the movie Belle goes to the west-wing when it is forbidden. When she enters the beast’s room she sees a flower but right when she was about to touch it the beast comes in and gives a big roar to frighten her off. It is then when she wants to escape and go back home with her father. When she was grabbing her coat to exit you hear her share a small piece of dialogue with the Lumière and Cogsworth. In this dialogue they asked Belle where she is going and she says she can’t be there another minute. With the cold wind coming in from the outside Lumière’s candles extinguish. Showing that the hope to turn back into their
Giambattista Basile’s dark rendition of “Sleeping Beauty,” entitled, “Sun, Moon and Talia,” is a story that brings the reader into a world that encompasses the idea of women being submissive creatures only valued for their beauty and at the mercy of men. The 2014 movie Maleficent, directed by Robert Stromberg, tries to subvert the notions of a male patriarchy by establishing Maleficent as an unlikely hero whose motivations go beyond the classic architype of a handsome prince claiming a one dimensional princess. Despite the movies attempts at establishing a more feminist friendly view of “Sleeping Beauty,” both Maleficent, and “Sun, Moon and Talia,” reduce the central characters of Aurora and Talia to simple props; completely devoid of
11) What about the Villains in Disney- Why all evil women have special powers in their aid whereas males simply use violence? Is Disney sexist?
The story of Sleeping Beauty is told in many different forms and is most famous from Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. For example, the fairytale “The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood” by Charles Perrault is quite different than Disney 's version. This fairytale should be researched because it has an interesting historical background and it is still culturally relevant to this day. The three main points that will be discussed about Sleeping Beauty in this paper is historical background, the different ways this fairytale is represented, and the cultural significance this story has on society. Researching this story has opened my eyes that the Sleeping Beauty movie I
If great writers are able to escape the influences of their era and write in a timeless fashion, then Jeanne Marie LePrince de Beaumont is certainly not a great writer. Beaumont wrote Beauty and the Beast in eighteenth-century France during the reign of Louis XV. It was a time when the enormous bourgeoisie population was slowly growing in independent wealth, yet remained grossly overtaxed and starved. These peasants were systematically excluded from the aristocracy and the workings of government. France was a stronghold of the dying feudal-influenced monarchy system, in which the king declared himself an absolute monarch with the divine right to rule as
In “Sleeping Beauty”, there is an evil fairy that is portrayed as a magic character. These characteristics have been common throughout fairytales for as long as people can remember. “Fairytales, as they exist today, took shape in sixteenth-century Italy” (Bottigheimer, par. 11) The Grimm brothers were known for creating fairytales for children but scrutinized for them being so gruesome. “Friends and associates of the Grimm brothers expressed their concern over the exposure of children to the household tales” (Einfeld 81). Although the Grimm brothers saw their stories as educational and having morals, many argue that the stories were not appropriate for children and should not be told to them. The Grimm brothers did start an argument though stating, “Fright was seen as an effective disciplinary measure for children” (Einfeld 91). By freighting kids they would learn lessons from their fairytales and remember them as they grew older. Frightening acts took place in many of the Grimm tales such as Rapunzel’s lover becoming blind by the evil Gothel while trying to visit her in the tower. The fairytales that the Grimm brothers created have over time been retold in less gruesome manner to educate children and provide entertainment.
Children 's stories have been around for some eras. They have been read to kids everywhere throughout the world in view of how they can identify with youngsters regardless of what society they originate from. One of the even more surely understood children 's stories is 'Sleeping Beauty '. The most generally known form today is the Disney motion picture, made in 1959. This film depended on the Grimm 's variant of Sleeping Beauty called 'Little Brier-Rose’, which was composed in 1812 in Germany. Another less known rendition of Sleeping Beauty is 'Sun, Moon and Talia’, which was composed in 1634 Italy by Giambattista Basile. The primary parts are a princess reviled to a profound rest until an aristocrat wakes her with a kiss. The characters in the stories may have numerous distinctions however; the key qualities that are perceived in Sleeping Beauty characters are still evident.
Most fairy tales involve characters with heroic tasks to complete in order to grow. They might have legendy strength, or a genie to help them. Sleeping Beauty is different because it involves long periods of concentration. Sleeping Beauty has been argued to represent the time period before and during adolescence. Children often need to go through a period of deep thought. Some may mistake this for inactivity, but their minds are still developing. Many children will make up for this inactivity after puberty, and will become successful in life (Bettelheim 225).
Maleficent is the Disney mistress of evil. She cursed a small child causing people everywhere to shudder at her name. What most people do not know, however, is her past. Aurora's father, the king, was once a simple village boy who yearned for power. In order to prove himself to the kingdom he seduced young Maleficent, earning her love and trust. One dreadful night, while Maleficent was sleeping soundly in his arms, the boy cut her wings off and fled, not caring for a second about Maleficent or the danger he put himself in. Maleficent vowed to herself never to fall in love or trust anyone again, distancing herself from the natural world. Soon after, the boy was announced king for his bravery and valor. He married a young lady and a few years later they bore a child, Aurora.
IT has also changed the way movies are shot particularly through application of film special effects. The film industry heavily relies on illusions to simulate imaginary events in a story (McClean, 2007). Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) is another key technology that is applied to special effects to enhance films. CGI is mainly used in special effects to enable filmmakers to control the scenes instead of using many extra actors. This has simplified film production and reduced the costs incurred. A lot of movies especially those classified under fiction, action, and horror genres rely on CGI.
The movie Maleficent was made in 2014. She was a small girl with wings and made all the creatures feel safe. They felt like no one was going to hurt them. In the beginning of the film she is just a young girl and meets a guy named stefan and ends up falling in love with him. Stefan and Maleficent grew up together. In the film, Maleficent is both a hero and a villain.
The portrayal of women, gender roles and stereotypes in Disney films has long been a controversial topic. Disney’s 1959 animated film, ‘Sleeping Beauty’, and Robert Stromberg’s 2014 live action remake, ‘Maleficent’, each provide a different take of Charles Perrault’s 1697 fairy tale, ‘La Belle au bois Dormant’ (‘The Sleeping Beauty’). The comparison of Aurora, one of the main characters from both films, brings into light the stark contrast in portrayals of gender roles as well as physical ideals and stereotypes in women. Emphasis or lack thereof on physical characteristics and gender representation from both texts challenge and reflect ideals and stereotypes that are impactful to the audience.
Disney movies bring a rush of joy, imagination, and excitement within little children whenever Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and/or Snow White pops up on the screen. The bright colors and exciting story makes them want to watch Disney movies again and again. Their dreams circle around finding their own prince charming and living happily ever after. Disney send lovely messages within their movies implying to never give up on one’s dreams, but if one analyzes these movies on a deeper level a few concepts come into play, misogyny, and patriarchy.
In Sleeping Beauty, the Prince is portrayed a strong and courageous person, he can be seen as a great character because he overcomes many obstacles to be able to help the Princess survive. Although Sleeping Beauty is a fairy tale and is stereotypically more admired by girls, the masculine tale might be liked by the male population because they aspire to be the male hero. Maleficent shows the feminine tale and warns the girls that not men cannot be trusted in some cases, and that there is no need to have a man by your side. A woman can survive on their own using her own intelligence and courage to overcome any obstacle that she might face. For the female population, this change is very important because this “hero” story helps us relate to the character and our desire to do great and special acts (Seger 387). This film proved that a woman is capable of defeating evil, and brings a new perspective into Disney
The original story by Giambattista differs from Disney’s new interpretation in that it explores rape. In Disney’s version of sleeping beauty the princess named Aurora is awakened from a true loves kiss. The story is told to children all over the world and is seen as appropriate for them. The original version of this story involves Talia, the princess, being raped. The Prince laid the dead princess on her bed “where he gathered the first fruits of love” (Basile). This version of the story is grossly inappropriate for today’s modern generation of children and is far from the happy ending we are used to. Fairy tales where not originally intended on being entertainment for children however through constant revisions they seemed to target their imagination, essentially causing them to be successful tales. Clearly the earlier version of sleeping beauty contains ideas that are not yet suitable for
