The day before Thanksgiving, I went to go visit Medical University of South Carolina Emergency Room. A place that I know all too well. The Medical University of South Carolina Adult emergency Room is located on 96 Jonathan Lucas Street located in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. The Medical University of South Carolina, better known as MUSC has been around 1824. It has been serving the town of Charleston and its’ citizen with amazing services and new techniques to treat diseases. “It has expanded from a small private college for the training of physicians to a state university with a medical center and six colleges for the education of a broad range of health professionals, biomedical scientists and other health related personnel” (Adams). MUSC is a teaching hospital that is always coming up with new and innovative ways to treat their patients. But it is never at the expense of their patient’s lives. The medical college first opened their doors to serve the community in December 20th, 1823 after it was charted by the South Carolina legislature. It then became the tenth medical college in the states. The first class of thirty students graduated in April of 1825. This medical has always been open. The only time it was not open was during the years of the Civil War (1861-1865). “Following the Civil War, the college was reorganized and continued to operate, at one point with as few as two students” (Adams). From two students to the many they have now, MUSC is still
Until the Flexner Report of 1910, requirements for admission to medical schools were rudimentary at best. Even the two prestigious schools in Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania and Jefferson Medical College, required only “one year of college work, in which, however, conditions have been very freely allowed.” and “a high school education or its equivalent,” respectively. Students at the University of Pennsylvania in the 1840s and 1850s were taught that science is based on experience and making a “judgment” as to the correct answer to a question or a problem. Civil War Surgeons’ medical education was severely limited by the concept that disease was caused by “bad air” (Dorwart, Bonnie Brice).
Moreover, the mission of Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, of improving the health of the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico is a vision that I share. Growing up in this region has allowed me to see the value of having individuals from the community serve as physicians. Furthermore, this will help close the primary care gaps in the underserved rural and Hispanic communities. I believe that the post-baccalaureate program of Foundations of Biomedical Sciences will give me the opportunity to demonstrate my capability of succeeding in a rigorous academic program such as Burrell College of Osteopathic
New discoveries spawn more medical research in medical colleges. In 1910, Abraham Flexner of the Carnegie Foundation publishes his study on medical education, and induces major medical education reform. Medical knowledge flourishes and specialists account for 20% of physicians in 1940. Hospitals begin to embellish new medical technology as physicians relied on the hospital as a source of access to new technology and as a facility in which to care for their sickest patients. This paper explores the history of Charleston Southern University located in the heart of the Lowcountry in Charleston, South Carolina. With its core Christian values, Charleston Southern achieves an atmosphere that most universities cannot. The history of this school can be pinpointed back to 1964 when it was initially founded (University History and Milestones, 2015). The early years were fairly rough, with low enrollment rates and very few majors being offered (Joslin, Merkling, & Strubel, 2014). However, the university went through countless changes that drove it to be the successful school that it is today. Now, Charleston Southern University is an academically excellent school and also a member of the NCAA Division I Big South Conference. This school started as merely an idea and expanded into a thriving university full of thousands of students.

Similar to the biology laboratory, where I focused on studies that prompted me to examine complex systems by observing their smaller cellular components, the Meharry Medical College, School of Medicine in Nashville, TN comes with the same instruction manual. Looking in from the outside, this institution is a vastly complex system, but after a tedious probing its special core components of excellence in medical education, research, and service can be remarkably uncovered. While it is an established fact that Meharry Medical College produces students who are competently trained and well prepared for the field of medicine; I, however, find its greatest attribute to be its special focus on serving the nation's underserved and most vulnerable populations.

With a mission devoted to providing an unparalleled medical education to students, focused upon continuous learning, holistic care and promotion of service to disadvantaged and underserved groups, I believe Meharry Medical College School of Medicine can provide me with a rich medical experience that will lend itself well to my development as both a medical student and aspiring physician.
With the start of medical school, studying basic sciences opened a door to the world enriched with years and years of research. With each passing semester, I gained more knowledge about the biochemical, physiological and anatomical aspects of medicine. The more knowledge I acquired, the more eager I became to apply what I had learnt into clinical practice. Those two years formed the foundation
I would be honored to enroll at the WMU homer Stryker M.D School of Medicine because of the school’s dedication to educating physicians through community outreach and commitment to lifelong learning. After volunteering for the past five years at the C.A.R.E. Clinic for the uninsured, I understand the need to serve uninsured Americans. Therefore, I want my medical school experience to incorporate opportunities to serve this population at locations such as the Family Health Center. In addition, the community health rotation would allow me to continue my commitment to the under and uninsured
Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) is one of the largest universities in Tennessee; however, they do not offer enough housing to provide for all of their students. As a result, students are expected to find their own housing off-campus. Hence, students must live in off-campus apartment complexes that are expensive, too far away, and difficult for young students to rent. While there are some benefits to off-campus housing, students face many problems in securing these types of housing situations. The prices of off-campus housing are high and the locations are often too far away from campus to walk. In addition, many apartment complexes do not want young, college-aged people living there.
UT Southwestern Medical School was formed in 1943 in the Southwestern Medical District of Dallas, Texas. It started off as a small wartime medical college and since then has grown exponentially. It now provides care to almost 90,000 patients and oversees 2 million outpatient visits and is affiliated with four hospitals: Parkland Memorial Hospital, Children's Medical Center, Zale Lipshy University Hospital, and St. Paul University Hospital.
Aspect to focus on is the significance of surgeons and Fort Union as a health facility in the U.S. Southwest.
