In 1803, the United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, about 828,000 square miles of land. This became known as the Louisiana Purchase. The land was huge; it began near the Mississippi River, stretching to the Rocky Mountains, and from the Gulf of Mexico all the way up to the border of Canada. In 1803, Thomas Jefferson was president, and the Louisiana Purchase was one of his greatest and most important achievement. In mid-18th century, France had control of the majority of present- day America. They ruled the land from New Orleans to the Great Lakes and what is now Montana. After the French and Indian War, France no longer had control o0ver this territory, Spain and Great Britain did. Mexican-American War The Mexican-American War began in 1846 and ended in 1848. It is known for being the first ever United States War fought in a different country. The Mexican- American War was fought between Mexico, who was very unprepared military wise, and also politically divided at the time, and Americans led by James K. Polk. James K. Polk was president at the time and he believed in a manifest destiny that stated that the United States was meant to expand westward, all the way to the Pacific Ocean. But of course, Mexico already owned that land he wanted to expand through. Polk wanted Mexico’s land in the west. He campaigned that Texas (newly independent from Mexico), and the present-day Southwest should be re-occupied, by America, but his requests were denied. Because of this, Polk began to move an army between the Nueces River and the Rio Grande. Then, on April 25, 1846, a group of United States soldiers was attacked by Mexican cavalry, killing almost a dozen men.
