World War One, also known as The Great War was fought between the Entente powers and Central powers. This war was fought from 1914 to 1918 and there were over 16 million deaths. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was the spark that started the war that would end all wars. The Archduke was killed in Sarajevo by a member of the Black Hand. Austria-Hungary then declared war on Serbia. There were additional factors that led to World War One. Militarism was a second cause of World War One. Militarism is a belief that a strong military is important for a country to be successful. The powerhouse nations like Great Britain and Germany started to build up their military. They started to develop new technology never seen before. They built very advanced airplanes and tanks that were equipped with deadly weapons. Militarism can be beneficial to a country. It can make the economy better because there are more jobs being created. By 1914 all the European powers were ready for war. Militarism can cause uneasy feelings in a country’s homefront. Thirdly, Alliances helped cause the war. Each side became jealous so they wanted to start an entangling alliance with other countries, so if war started they would have some help. The triple Entente consisted of France, Russia and Great Britain. The Central Powers consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. Imperialism was the fourth reason why World War One started.
