As everyone already knows there is always that one person that may seem like a hero but deep down they are not. Here is the story of Odysseus trying to find his way back home and some of the mistakes he made along the way. When Odysseus son Telemachus was born he had to go and fight the Trojan War. Once the Trojan war was over the gods took him to many different islands. Along the way Odysseus has trouble with other humans or a different types of sea monsters. It took him twenty years to get back home to his wife Penelope. Just like all people are not perfect neither is the character Odysseus. there are three prime examples where Odysseus doesn’t make the right choices; going to go see the cyclops, staying with Calypso for seven years, and letting him man open the bag of winds. …show more content…
The first prime example is Odysseus going to go visit the cyclops. Odysseus has never seen a cyclops before, so he was curious enough to stop on the island where the cyclops live. This is where he makes the biggest mistake if Odysseus would have went passed the island were the cyclops lived it would have saved them time. Instead Odysseus tries to go inside the cave where the cyclops lives and lies to him making it worse for him. After the cyclops eats two of Odysseus man he knew it was time to leave. The book states “he clutched at my companions and caught two in his hands like squirming puppies to beat their brains out, splattering to the floor”. Now Odysseus is down two men. Although he knew that cyclops ate humans he went anyways risking some of his man life. If Odysseus didn’t stop it would have been easier for him to to arrive home early instead of him being
He takes the pain so that his men would be safe and unharmed. Odysseus proves to be arrogant when he yells out that “Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye” (504) to the cyclops. This scream is just for Odysseus to get attention. Lucky, none of his crew is hurt after escaping from the monster's cave. The chance of an accident happening is very high for little reward.
In The Odyssey- Part II, Odysseus with the help of his son and loyal servants. They slaughtered all the suitors and maids for the following: they tried to take advantage of his goods, they tried to marry his wife continuously, and destroyed his house. The slaughter of many of the suitors may have been brutal, but it was necessary.
Odysseus is not a hero because he lets his pride make most of his decisions, which gets him into difficult situations. Throughout The Odyssey, Odysseus makes mistakes that causes his men to be killed. Most of these mistakes could have been fixed by Odysseus making better decisions throughout his journey.
In the evidence that is stated in the quote is that all he really cared about was the Cyclops knew that he was stronger and smarter than him, and that he was better and that he wanted to claim responsibility for blinding the Cyclops leads to the summoning of the curse. For example, another quote that is shown and stated was, “Odysseus informs them of Circe’s warnings. First, they will encounter the Sirens. Circe has instructed Odysseus that he should be the only crew member to hear the alluring songs (Fitzgerald “Part 2” 7). This evidences that even though he knows the danger his men and him are going to go through, he still decides that he still needs to go through the sirens and
After the Trojan war all of the Greek warriors had made it home, except for Odysseus and his men. For them the journey home had many twists and turns that caused them to be away from home for more than 10 years after the war. Their delay was caused because of their inability to follow direct orders and resist the temptation of disobedience. It was for this same reason why none of them made it home, except for Odysseus; although he was the main culprit for heeding to temptation.
For example, when Odysseus and his men were to pass the Sirens, Odysseus knew that it was his obligation to listen to their deadly melody. When he tells his men that he “alone should listen to their song”(727), Odysseus is showing his sense of fearlessness. Odyssey knew what could have happened if the ropes that held him down were to rip or if he had put one of his men in that position. In another situation, Odyssey rivals his smart with the cyclopes. He and his men had to find a way out of its cave. He knew that the cyclops was a shepherd and used this to his advantage. The cypopes was eventually going to have to let his herd out of the cave, so Odyssey “convy[s] each man”(427) under a sheep and they all escape the deadly cave. Odyssey’s sense of fearlessness and intelligence help him and his make it out of there
Every day people make decisions. Some are more important than others, but all decisions have consequences, no matter how small. The decisions that you make, and the decisions others make could affect your life. They may have positive effects, but they may also have negatives effects like in The Odyssey by Homer. In general, Odysseus and his men made some decisions that lead to some very negative effects.
While Odysseus and his men are stuck in the cave with the Cyclops, Odysseus comes up with the intricate plan of getting the Cyclops drunk, stabbing him in the eye so he becomes blind, and escaping on the bottom of his rams. This is one of the many ways that Odysseus attempts to save his men throughout the story. Not only does Odysseus repeatedly save his men from bad situations, but he is also selfless towards them. When they have to pass the sirens, he makes sure that none of them have to hear the sirens except
Odysseus is known for being a great war hero and leader who must go through many obstacles to reach his homeland of Ithaca. Many of the obstacles are caused by the gods, however Odysseus is the cause of his own troubles. He does not learn from his mistakes and his main flaw is pride.
In Book 9, Odysseus does battle with a popular Greek Mythology creature the Cyclopes. Here Odysseus shows us how cunning he can be. While trapped Odysseus really fears that he will never see that homeland of Ithaca ever again. He is very mournful and we see just how much he misses home. He finally realizes how to escape from the Cyclops. He stabs the Cyclops in his only eye blinding him. He then tells the monster
Odysseus only cares about himself and his personal benefits, like a villain. “With great power comes great responsibility” this quote is used by many heros and odysseus obviously shows no responsibilities, so his power is simply bad, or evil . When “trapped” on Calypso’s island he shows no attempt to escape and instead finds pleasure in being their. After 7 years on this island he finally decides to go home to has son which he has never seen and his dog who is nearly dead due to old age (not to mention he barely does anything with his dog and the first thing he says to his son is basically to ask him to risk his life for Odysseus's house). “ Don't waste your time on revenge. Those who hurt you will eventually get their own karma”. This quote shows that good people and heros should not seek revenge and should show mercy to their enemies however Odysseus obviously shows no interest in mercy… After killing many people and not letting a single person out which many heroes would have especially if the people did not directly mistreat him and believed he was dead which would be a logical thought he finally revealed himself to his wife. At first his wife did not recognize him which filled him with rage even though he should be happy that his loyal wife wants to make
Odysseus illustrates countless strengths during the adventure of Aeolus & the Laestrygonians. One of Odysseus’ strengths is his mastery in speech. After sailing for a while, Odysseus lands on the magical island of the Aeolians. While adventuring through the floating island he comes across the halls of Aeolus, the king of the Aeolians. As a result, he begs the king to help him reach his homeland, “And then, when I begged him to send me on my way, he denied me nothing, he went about my passage.
Towards the begging of the story Odysseus and his men get trapped in a cave by a Cyclopes The Cyclops is eating his men so Odysseus decides he must kill the Cyclops in order to save the remainder of his men. As Odysseus is about to kill the Cyclops, he remembers that he is trapped in a cave with a large boulder blocking the entrance that he and his men will not be able to move. So at this point, Odysseus decided that kill the Cyclops will in turn be killing his men so instead he jabs a shark stake into the Cyclops only eye blinding the Cyclops and saving him and his men. Now you might say that in this case Odysseus is not a hero because he was not thinking ahead in the first place and was too curious and got him and his men caught by the Cyclops. But although Odysseus makes the
Eyelid and lash were seared... The cyclops bellowed and the rock roared round him, and tugged the bloody spike out of his eye”(Hom. Od. 9.295). When Odysseus and his men got stuck in the cave of the cyclops Polyphemus, the men wanted to get out of the cave and they had the idea to kill Polyphemus while he was sleeping. Odysseus is smart enough to know that they wouldn't be able to get back out and got him drunk then stabbed him so that he would be able to still open the cave and escape, he is
