The elements of an epic consist of many things. A few of those elements are that it has a vast setting (many countries around the world), A hero that battles natural and supernatural forces, and Divine intervention in the lives of humans. Gilgamesh contains all these elements and more, thus making is an epic.

An epic is an extended narrative poem in elevated or dignified language, celebrating the feats of a legendary or traditional hero.   The main characteristics of an epic as a literary genre is that it is a long poem that tells a story, it contains an epic hero, its hero searches for immortality (but doesn't find it physically, only through fame), gods or other supernatural beings are interested and involved, and it delivers an historical message.  The Epic of Gilgamesh is classified as an epic because it fits all the characteristics of an epic as a literary genre.

The epic hero is a figure of great stature and may be a character from history or legend. Epic heroes’ most remarkable traits are usually the ones most valued by the society from which the epic came. The main character in this epic is Odysseus. Odysseus is on a quest to find his home after a war. Odysseus is an epic hero.

Batman Begins and the Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh both feature the story of a culture hero. In both of these works, the heroic quest of the culture hero is significant. Apart from having similar narratives, these two stories also have significant differences in themes. In The Epic of Gilgamesh, Gilgamesh becomes a hero for fame and immortality, while in Batman Begins; Bruce Wayne becomes a hero to avenge the deaths of his parents and at the same time protect the city of Gotham. In this case the epic has to do with the events of a hero that represented an entire nation. The events of this hero are dramatic and tae place in a vast amount of area, which makes it more worthy.
