The short story, “Shaving”, by Leslie Norris has several modes of discourse, three of them very evident. This story is told as a narration, following a plot line from the beginning to the end. Within the plotline, description helps us understand who the main character is and what is happening in his life, the narrator mentioning that “the smell of illness was everywhere”. He then goes on to shave his father’s beard and describes the razor as it “[the new edge] moved light as a touch over the hardness of the upper jaw and down to the angle of the chin”. Although many stories are written with good narration, only some use intense descriptive techniques to their advantage in telling the story. After reading “Shaving”, I want to be able to incorporate
In the story “Shaving” by Leslie Norris the main character is a boy who is growing up and has to take responsibilities for the family. He has to take responsibility for the family because his father is growing older and he is the only other male in the family. For example, when Barry’s mother says “Mr. Cleaver was supposed to come up and shave him” Barry replies by saying “I’ll shave him” (113). This shows that Barry is growing up and that he thinks he can shave his father instead of his father asking Mr. Cleaver to come shave him. Another example of Barry growing up is when he says he is “not too young” and that he is “bigger than most men” (116).
There has been a notable amount of conversation on the internet on the rebirth of the natural hair movement. Cherise Luter (2014) states that despite afros and the natural hair movement not being a new concept (i.e. the Black Power Movement), it has gone under what she calls a “refreshing change”. Furthermore, what used to be “I’m black and I’m proud”, has been replaced with “I’m me and I’m proud” (Luter 2016). So, what is the natural hair movement? It is defined as a movement where black women decide to not conform to the social norms of chemically altering their hair and wearing it in its natural, kinky, or curled state (Joignot 2015). The movement could also be considered as an outlet for black women to display their racial and cultural pride or to articulate their “political position (Brown 2014:297). However, simply the terminology “movement” is something that should be shocking to many. There is a great amount of historical context behind the continuous influence Eurocentric beauty ideals have had on black women for centuries. According to Nadia Brown (2014), Black natural hair throughout history has proven to be recognized as “either unintended or intended personal and political statements” (298). the beauty standard in Western society which praises European hair textures, has influenced many black women to be critical of other black women who choose to chemically straighten their hair, accusing them of being subservient to the dominant and pervasive racist
There are many writing techniques/crafts that authors write about in their story. For example, stories could have metaphors, flashbacks/flash forwards, or tone. But, in the story The Tell-Tale Heart, Edgar Allan Poe uses symbolism, revealing actions, and descriptive language to show why the narrator wants to kill the old man.
Being in the army, means you are part of a team. Being part of a team means you have to rely on other people, and other people have to rely on you. If you aren't being a team player then you can let the team and your battle buddies down. By not shaving, you are letting your battle buddies and team down. The army is based on uniformity and cleanliness. When you don't shave you begin to expire that idea.
As I read this short story in the beginning, the gist of what I have captured the narrator writing is whether the man with a strange habit does really exist or not. Or, if he did exist who was the man that was hitting the narrator in the story on the head without stopping. It sticks in my mind wondering who the strange man was to the narrator. Somehow, despite the agony of trying to understand the motive underlies the story; I was at first wondering what was the strange man had gone through
For everyday pictures, you can mix things up by telling a story with your photography. Instead of snapping pictures as they happen with no influence on the shots, this style of photography involves planning and executing your vision. The storytelling is completely up to you.
A good story is always structured with details that are easy to follow while intriguing readers with reality and emotions. Edwidge Danticat’s memoir has proven her ability to use descriptions that allows the text and the readers to connect. Through her writing, she is able to get the reader involved in her situation, so that it is as if they are experiencing it too. Adding on, Danticat cleverly writes each type of description in a way that makes them distinct from each other. This connects the two which adds to her message. Descriptions bring life to her story and stresses the real events that happened to her and her family which displays her message effectively. That being said, without objective and subjective descriptions, any piece
Have you ever wondered about the differences between the two short stories, “Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez and “The Sniper” By Liam O’Flaherty? “Lather and Nothing Else” describes the story of a revolutionary Barber that unluckily comes in contact with his rival and is forced to shave him. He has to decide what he shall do. In “The Sniper”, a sniper faces his rival enemy in a war. He has to have the guts and intelligence to make his decisions and discovers his rival wasn’t his enemy at all. This essay will focus on the similarities, the differences and argue whether they are more alike, or divergent in the plot.
In his collection of short shorties, O’Brien writes in a style that is very vivid and often times causes the audience to find themselves accepting the events and details of these stories as the truth. O’Brien contrasts the truth to fiction by reminding the audience that within these short stories, the details are not the truth and are there to demonstrate the human emotions that can not be communicated as absolute facts.
In Michael Oppenheimer’s short fiction “The Paring Knife” he acknowledges how something small can be remember what angry arguable incident occurs four years ago. As a couple cleaning the
The military is very strict on its policies for shaving in order to make its soldiers look more presentable. In the military’s view every soldier must be clean shaven with the exception of moustaches, profiles, or in the Special Forces.
My most significant experience in my life is unforgettable. I was there with my sisters, my mom, and my dad. It was the most horrifying event that I have ever witnessed. The daunting image in my head is still clear as day, as though it happened yesterday. This event did not affect only me, but also my family. The story that I am about to tell you may change the way you see things and it may not. All I can say is, it
Thesis: In “The Possessive”, Sharon Olds uses a simple haircut to depict the splitting of ends between mother and daughter. Quotes: “In her bright helmet/she looks at me as if across a/great distance” (Olds 15-17). The narrator's daughter’s new hairstyle pushes them farther apart from a close mother bird’s watchful eye to then only being allowed to watch the spreading of her baby’s wings.
The story “The Flowers” by Alice Walker was the best example of description. The author gives really good detail and makes it easy to picture the story in your head. An example of a point where she used good detail is in the first paragraph when she said, “... made each day a golden surprise that caused excited little tremors to run up her jaws.” the author could have just said that harvesting made her excited but she made us feel how excited she was. Another point where she used good detail was in the third paragraph when she described when she saw the water rising up and going down stream as “... tiny white bubbles disrupt the thin black scale of soil…”. Also another point that caught my attention where she used great description was when
