It has recently become inappropriate for one to criticize certain societal topics without having others scold them for doing so. Thus, humorists have found success in various ways by accusing these issues with comical approaches. Humorists tend to serve a vital function in today’s society as this humor is what allows them to express their thoughts on specific beliefs that, if stated directly, would not be seen adequate in the public eye.
Whether it’s a light-hearted, much-needed laugh, or a rebel trying to prove a certain point, there will always be a certain need for humor. Will Ferrell, Jimmy Fallon, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Chris Rock, and Eddie Murphy have all participated in key skits on a TV show titled Saturday Night Live. This show airs comedy sketches, which parody culture and politics, that call for an entertaining way to point out societal issues. It intends to improve humanity by criticizing its recklessness. Satirical pieces can range anywhere from a carefree subject to a very serious situation. One ideal example of this technique comes from Jonathan Swift in his work The Modest Proposal. Swift presents a solution dealing with the issue of poverty in Ireland. Poor children are forced to live unpleasantly due to the fact that their families are too poor to keep them properly fed and clothed. However, his proposal quickly becomes ridiculous, violent, and insane. Intending to solely help Ireland, Swift states that the country needs to fatten up these underweight and undernourished children and feed them across Ireland’s rich landowners.
