The Mohawk Indian Tribe

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians are indigenous of parts of the Southeastern United States. They have members all the way south as Georgia and are spread out across the Appalachian mountain trail in both North and South Carolina and stretching across into Tennessee. The land in which each tribe is from has a particular way is shaping how they live and defines the important aspects of that culture. In the Eighteenth Century the Cherokee Indians were one of the most heavily populated Indian societies in the Southeastern United States. These Indians have many unique political and spiritual ideas and world views.

The Mohawk tribe was fierce. They were located in upstate New York to Southern Quebec and Eastern Ontario. The people of the Mohawk tribe lived in villages of longhouse, these were made out of wood as the frames with animals fur and elm tree’s bark. The would eat the fish and any animals they caught with their weapons including bow and arrows, knives, and clubs, also they ate a lot of corn, beans, and squash, that's what they grew. The leader of tribes name is Thayendangea also known as Joseph Brant, he made the rules. The Mohawk’s had to fight their neighboring tribes for their dominance of the beaver fur trade, and they won. In a far far away land there where we're two tribe, one of the tribe we're call the ojibwe. The other tribe was call the mohawk. The two tribe had a leader with great power these leaders are Chief John Redcorn from the ojibwe, and Grand Cherokee from the Mohawks. The Shoshone or sometimes referred to as the Snake Indians lived in the states that we know as Utah, Idaho, Nevada, and Wyoming. This tribe was “first encountered by Lewis and Clark in 1805” (learner.org, 2016). The Shoshone tribe is related to the Ute, Comanche, and Paiute Indians. The Shoshone tribe mostly lived as hunters and gatherers but regrettably had tense interactions with the Euro-American settlers which resulted in approximately 200 Shoshones being slaughtered in 1863 which was one of the first and greatest massacres west of the Mississippi River (shoshonebannocktribes.com). The Sioux and Chippewa Indian tribes’ have a drastically different way of living compared to what other people are accustomed to in terms of their history, clothing, tools, and weapons needed for survival. The Sioux Indians were originally from Asia, but migrated to America about 30,000 years ago. Their long, straight jet-black hair resembles that of the Asian descendants. The Sioux tribes were located in The Great Plains, which consists of 7 different states Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota; however, they were also known to live in parts of Nebraska, Illinois, and Montana. “The name Sioux is an abbreviation of Nadouessioux. (Britannica) The name was given to them by the Ojibwa (Chippewa). Sioux means, “Little snake”. The Sioux tended to follow the pattern of the buffalo, which is why they are found in multiple locations.

One of these Native American colonies was the Iroquois who were mainly from the colony of New York. Iroquois were a nation of five then later six Native American tribes. The six original Iroquois tribes were the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Tuscarora. They were known as the people of the long house. This is because they lived in long houses, many families lived together in one house.

The Comanche Tribe is made up of brilliant horsemen who took control of the Southern Plains. They are most known for playing a large role in Texas frontier during most of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Although the Comanche’s lived near the upper reaches of the Platte River in eastern Wyoming, they later established themselves from western Oklahoma to the Texas Panhandle into New Mexico. Today, currently 5,000 Comanche’s live near Lawton, Oklahoma; their tribal headquarters.

I picked the Chinook tribe, which is a northwestern tribe located around the columbian river, or today's Washington and Oregon. The land and climate really defined how the Chinook people lived and is why it’s defined as a folk culture. The Chinook tribe is around large forests that the tribe uses to build canoes and large houses. The Chinook tribe would build these large houses and many people could live inside, these houses were made out of red cedar a tree that was very abundant in the area. The Climate where the Chinook tribe located was very harsh but easy at times. The climate existed of very rainy seasons with very hot seasons that defined what the Chinook tribe would wear. The Choctaw Indians were an important tribe, and the largest of the Muskogean tribes. The Choctaws have two stories about their origins in their traditional homeland in central Mississippi. One is that their ancestors came from west of the Mississippi River and settled in what is now the homeland. The other is that the tribe is descended from ancestors who were formed by a spirit from the damp earth of Nanih Waiyah, a large mound in northeastern Mississippi. Either way, the Choctaws resided in places, holding most of Southern Alabama and Mississippi with adjoining parts of Louisiana.

In the 1620s the Pequot tribe seeked to control the trade routes in and around present day Connecticut by force. By the early 1630s, the English had arrived and wanted to break their hold on the trade routes. In 1636, an honest trader by the name of John Oldman was murdered by the Pequot tribe in an attempt to halt England’s expansion upon the trade routes. Many Englishmen felt that the Pequots killing of John Oldman was a their way to wage war against the English. The English felt that it was their turn to fight back.

The Wichita is a tribe that belongs to a small tribe about three hundred and twenty who live in Oklahoma. They are a tribe of Native Americans who were discovered by the Coronado expedition. Like other Native American tribes the Wichita people have their own language, culture and both, social and legal customs. They refer to themselves as Kitikitish which can be taken literally to mean raccoon eyelids. But signifies a tattooed eyelid which is from a former custom among men where they tattooed lines upon their eyelids. Women however tattoo lines upon the chin and among older women there are those with tattooed designs all over their breasts. The Wichita people were primarily sedentary interested in hunting and farming. The men hunted and went for wars for the protection of their families while women farmed and raised children.

I chose to research the Oneida Nation Tribe of Indians of Wisconsin Elderly Heath Care. Here is a little background on the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. They are located in Brown and Outagamie Counties. They are descendants of an indigenous Iroquoian-speaking nation that arose in the present-day central-western New York. The Oneida Tribe is a sovereign government. Oneida means “long awaited” and they spoke Oneida. Lastly, they have three clans: Turtle, Bear, and Wolf Clan. The Turtle Clan represents the shifting of the earth and the cycles of the moon. The people of this clan represent the well of information and the keepers of the land. 1). The reason for the construction of the Iroquois confederacy, or the league of the Iroquois, (Haudenosaunee) was the impeding factor of disunity between the tribes. Hienwatha, a Mohawk Iroquois, lived in Ontario and observed the disunity between the Iroquois tribes. In an attempt to unify the nations, he approached rival tribes and argued the benefits of unification. Initially, his idea is shut down by the elders of each tribe. The changing climate that started to occur, however, increased confrontations between tribes. Hienwatha yet again tries to explain to the Iroquois people about the possibility of peace and is rejected again. He then alludes the nations to a weaved belt of wampum shells which supposedly illustrated the connectedness of the five Iroquois nations. He traveled among the nations, of which all then supported the idea of unity, and was able to form a seemingly impenetrable force.

Have you ever heard of the Cherokee Indians? Sure you have! Just as a reminder, they are the biggest tribe, and most known of out of all the Indian tribes there has ever been in the southeast. They are very important to American History and helped shaped us to be the Americans we are today, which is clearly what I 'll be explaining in this paper.
