My essay is about three things from the story called “The Most Dangerous Game”. Civilized means to be human, not to be a savage or an animal. My main three ideas are that if Zaroff considers himself civilized, Rainford considers zaroff civilized, and Rainsford considers himself civilized. First of all Zaroff considers himself civilized. Zaroff was a civilized until he bought the island.Zaroff was casual until he mentioned about a “hunt” he was going on. Zaroff is civilized because he hunts animals and hangs trophies of them on his wall. Zaroff said he had created a new animal in which is smart to avoid his attacks. he has electricity to make him look like he is civilized. Next my topic is about how the evidence shows that Rainsford considers
The readers would think that he is civilized when he says, "We try to be civilized here." (226) However, the purpose of Zaroff<Spelling errors> saying this was to try to make readers think that Zaroff<Spelling errors> is civilized. Zaroff<Spelling errors> wanted the readers to believe that he took good care of his guests, but in actuality, he did not. Zaroff<Spelling errors> says, "Life is for the strong, and if need be, taken by the strong. The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure." (225) On the other hand, readers may believe that Sanger<Spelling errors> Rainsford is civilized. This may be argued to the point that Rainsford is a hunter who kills animals in the uncivilized wilderness, but Rainsford states, "Thank you, I am a hunter, not a murderer," (225)The<Spelling errors> quote proves that Rainsford has good morals, and he is polite because he thinks of other people, proving that Rainsford is
We try to be civilized here’”(Connell 75).He considers electricity a sign of civilization even though he uses it to lure ships to the rocks so he may capture the sailors. His idea of civilization may not match a more normal person’s ideas. When Rainsford objects, Zaroff protests.“ ‘[…]That would be barbarous. I treat these visitors with every consideration. They get plenty of good food and exercise[…]splendid physical condition’” (Connell 76).Zaroff uses a euphemism to describe his prisoners and claims that treating them well is a mark of a civilized man. He treats them well so that they will be healthy, well trained, and more challenging to hunt. Zaroff claims to be civilized, but the reality is quite different from Zaroff’s assertions.
The Most Dangerous Game has a dark action you can examine right away from reading the story. In this story, the character General Zaroff starts off by hunting animals and than slowing moves onto hunting humans. This dark action is highlighted when Zaroff hunts the animals and people in the story.
In The Most Dangerous Game, a short story by Richard Connell, General Zaroff is the antagonist. He lives on Ship Trap island, and hunts stranded sailors for game because they possess all of the qualities that he thinks are important; courage cunning and reason. Zaroff has all of these characteristics, especially the ability to reason. For instance, he tells the Rainsford, the protagonist, “I, luckily had invested heavily in American securities” (Connell, 12). This precaution was well thought out, and allowed Zaroff to keep his fortune after the Crossaks lost the war. He clearly used strong reasoning skills to consider the possible outcomes of the war, and chose the option that would benefit him the most. General Zaroff also uses logic to defend
The most dangerous game was about a hunter that’s hunts man and a hunter. General Zaroff was the man hunter and Rainsford the hunter. Sanger Rainsford falls overboard and swims to an island which Zaroff owns. Zaroff ’s is the one who took Rainsford from the shore. The conflict was about Zaroff telling Rainsford that he’s going to hunt him. Then moments later, Rainsford runs and hide in a tree and Zaroff lets him escape. Rainsford builds a Malay man catcher, which it wounds Zaroff. As the story carries on Rainsford confronts Zaroff in his bedroom. Then, sleeps in his bedroom which we can say that he mysteriously killed him.
“It reminds me of when my dad made me choose which of my pet calves to slaughter with my own hands for my sixth birthday. I couldn’t choose so I slaughtered both of them… They were delicious.” This quote from Ron Swanson of Parks and Recreation really ties into “The Most Dangerous Game”. In the story “The Most Dangerous Game”, this man, Sanger Rainsford, had fallen off a yacht and swam to an island with a huge mansion on it. Rainsford thinks that he has been saved when General Zaroff welcomes him into his house and feeds him dinner. Rainsford then figures out that General Zaroff has invented a new breed of animal to hunt because regular animals bored him; he lures people to the island and hunts them for the game. General Zaroff challenges Rainsford
In Richard Connell's short story “The Most Dangerous Game,” he characterizes General Zaroff indirectly through Rainsford’s thoughts. The General feels that hunting is his life, and so when he becomes bored of hunting animals, Zaroff decides to abandon his morals and make his prey the smartest of them all; fellow humans. Zaroff challenges Rainsford, a renown hunter trapped on Ship Trap Island, to a hunt to the death. After many close calls, Rainsford kills Zaroff, winning the competition. Rainsford has a near miss with Zaroff that fills him with dread and makes him think,“The General was playing with him. The General was saving him for another day’s sport,” (pg 9). This quote shows one of Zaroff’s traits, his confidence, which is implied because
General Zaroff is uncivilized because he thinks that it is fair and ordinary to kill other humans for his own pleasure. The text shows that he is uncivilized when he replies to Rainsford’s comment about murder and says, “Life is for the strong, and if needs be, taken by the strong” (Connell 14). When Zaroff says that life is for the strong, it reveals that he is a very selfish person who doesn’t care about others. It reveals his perspective on the world. It also shows that General Zaroff is a very one-sided person. Another example that proves that General Zaroff is uncivilized is when he comments
In the story "The most dangerous game" a man by the name of Rainsford is sailing his yacht through the Caribbean near and island named "ship wreck island". Rainsford falls off his yacht and end up on the island he finds himself stranded with a psychotic hunter named Zaroff who's idea of fun was hunting men instead of animals. Within a few days of landing on that forsaken island, Rainsford finds himself in a deadly game of cat and mouse with Zaroff. Zaroff uses his power to persuade Rainsford to play. I have seen this many a time in games such as basket ball, football, and also everyday life.
Rainsford and General Zaroff have similar and different characteristic traits on how they view hunting. The two characters are very alike, because they are both smart, intelligent hunters. An example of this is they are both skilled hunters and world travelers. Strategy was a part of their everyday lives, but Zaroff took strategy further when he decided to make it about a game, placing Rainsford as the most important piece on the board. An example of this is “They are both skilled hunters and world travelers” Zaroff’s classification system contrasts against Rainsford’s.
Zaroff is purely unconscious, and has no compassion or remorse for his actions. His demented mind forces him to believe that it is moral to hunt all living creatures, when in reality he is actually murdering a human soul. The general is sadistic as well as arrogant. He is mentally unstable, insane, and he denies the fact that he is committing something as bad as what he is doing. According to General Zaroff, hunting for him has been consumed by boredom and he no longer sees hunting as a challenge. Consequently, he chooses to hunt a certain “creature” with a higher mental stability of the creatures he has hunted before.(Connell 21) As Zaroff became comfortable with Rainsford, he
What does it mean to be civilized how do you considers yourself civilized? Being civilized means to be polite and well mannered. Evidence from the story shows that Zaroff considers himself civilized,Rainsford considers Zaroff civilized, and Rainsford considers himself civilized. First, Zaroff considers himself civilized because he has the ability to mostly control his emotions, as most civilized people would when they angered by what someone says.
In his book, General Zaroff, a person that's gone mad into killing other humans for entertainment, thinks a civilized person is just a wealthy and well-educated person who takes advantage of their knowledge and uses it to its maximum potential such as himself. General Zaroff himself has good knowledge in food and luxuries as he serves guests fillet mignon and provides lots of fancy wine which he drinks daily. To prove his wealth, he owns a mansion with a beautiful chateau as well as other rich decorations. Zaroff also has many modern conveniences such as electricity and to provide entertainment for himself, he bought an island and built his mansion on it all so he could live and hunt in the same area. This is what General Zaroff thinks is civilized as t is proven when he says to his guest Mr. Rainsford
In the story, “The Most Dangerous Game” it portrays how enlightened individuals will turn uncouth if life relies upon it. First off, civilized is being educated more and being a good person who understands and respects others and themselves. Individuals in the story begin civilized, at that point end up plainly savage, particularly if life relies upon it. But being savage doesn’t necessarily mean that you aren’t civilized. Not all civilized people are nice, kind, and you know, civil. They have a bad side. Everyone does. Some people just may not notice it.Rainsford thinks of himself as civilized because he doesn’t murder he hunts and I agree with him.
“ Instinct is no match for reason” This is true according to general Zaroff, but does the author of the story agree? Yes, the author of “ The Most Dangerous Game” believes that reason is no match for instinct. Throughout the story he gives examples of how reason has out smarted instinct. Reason is the explanation or justification of a certain action or event;the reason is not affected by force of habit. It is a process of very analytical thinking. Instinct, instinct is action woven into your mind for long periods of time; it is a second nature for you. For example a professional basketball player following through after your shot, they do not have to think about what they are doing they just do it. Instinct is done by a force of habit, you do not think of instinct; it just comes naturally.
