Traditionally, the concept of motherhood is met with vivid imagery of a woman and her journey through the creation of life, and the fruit of her enormous labor. It is similarly characterized by the emotional impact it has upon the woman at the time, such feelings include the overwhelming protectiveness and love she feels towards the child. However, while most woman follow suit in this situation, others have quite a different perspective on the matter. Some women act out of love in a much alternative course. This can be highlighted in a poem by Gwendolyn Brooks called “the mother”. She relates the idea of abortion to the reader in passionate expression of her regret, and allows the reader to glimpse her experience with motherhood and the fierce love she feels toward her unborn. Abortion is met as an unspeakable and selfish act, but this author shows the truth that lies under the word itself. Brooks’ story accounts her reflection on her decision to have abortions as acts of love rather than a violent ending of a child’s life.
The institution of creating life is never founded upon a single individual, it is a process that involves two persons. Although women bare most of the load, that doesn’t inherently mean she is solely responsible. Bringing a child in the world alone is a great deal of labor, but none of that accounts for lengthy and tedious upbringing of said child.
