What is Passion? Passion is “an intense desire or enthusiasm for something” (Oxford English Dictionary). This implies that passion motivates you in do something (such as activities) that you will enjoy and feel confidence about it. For instance, in “The Mother of All Questions”, by Rebecca Solnit, she says “I set out to write books, to be surrounded by generous, brilliant people, and to have great adventures” (6). Solnit is trying to show that passion is love for what you do. Consequently, each individual has its own view of passion -- that include Rebecca Solnit’s essay “The Mother of all Questions”, Malcolm Gladwell’s, Outliers, an interviewee and myself. In this essay we will look to find how passion plays in our thoughts about work. Rebecca Solnit’s idea of love and passion are intertwined but are different from the societal view. According to the article, “The Mother of All Questions”, Solnit suggests that love for what you do is truly happiness for women -- not how or what the society …show more content…
In the book, Outliers, Gladwell writes about people that become successful through their passion. Although he did not exactly used the word passion, his idea of success still show that passionate people are more likely to become successful than those without passion. For example, Bill Gate, he is known as a winze of math during the period of their time, after he found out about computer, his world change and his started to have this passion about computer “It was my obsession” (Gladwell 52). This mean bill gate was passionate about his work and this plays a very big role in his successful future. Base on this, Gladwell’s example are only about themselves; however, there is also the how his example helps his audience know what is important for ourselves and how success plays in our life. Due to this, his idea of passion is slightly different from the societal view and
In Outliers, Gladwell attempts to answer, What makes some people successful while others cannot seem to realize their full potential? In U.S. society, people are considered successful when they have traits and characteristics: self-sacrifice, intelligence, talent. However, He says that the conditions and circumstances surrounding our lives are the significant influential factors that determine our success, not our inner ability or talent. These talents and abilities allow these people to be separate from society.
Gladwell questions the way we make sense of success. He argues that we attribute success to individual qualities (talent, motivation, genius) but in fact success stories and successful outliers are people who are the beneficiaries of hidden advantages, extraordinary opportunities and cultural legacies.
Gladwell proves that you must work hard and be dedicated to become successful. For example “The Matthew Effect” in chapter one is mainly about the Canadian hockey league although Gladwell makes
Malcolm Gladwell is a well-known journalist and non-fiction writer. In our assigned reading materials “Outliers”, Gladwell explores different social and psychological phenomena as well as their implications for businesses and individuals. Gladwell proclaims that success is shaped by external entities which certain individuals are granted precise opportunities and advantages that not everybody is given by fate. However, even though Gladwell’s theory at attaining success holds some validity, he completely avoids and excludes the value of hard-work and determination. The core of success is always within the individual which can be achieved by perseverance through difficult times and setbacks as opposed to solely capitalizing on other people’s hard work and effort.
"The biggest misconception about success is that we do it solely on our smarts, ambition, hustle and hard work” (Gladwell, 42). Outliers is a book that praises the success of great men, then cuts them down to size by explaining how it wasn’t pure hard work and sweat. Gladwell studies those who have already achieved society’s idea of “success.” Every chapter is filled with detailed examinations of cultural heritage and environment in relation to the idea of “success”.The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore is a detailed analysis that undergoes a comparison between two characters with outwardly similar beginnings but entirely different destinies due to personal choices, self-determination, and effort. The book values the importance of discipline and
The way it is written, the book feels contains the curiosity and wonder Gladwell had during the research and writing of it. He wanted to know what could lead to immense success, and he sought it out. He target audience of this book is anyone who may be curious; specifically high school students. This book focuses on “one kind of outlier after another: to geniuses, business tycoons, rock stars, and software programmers,” (Gladwell 17). High schoolers are just on the threshold of potential.
I believe that Gladwell’s purpose for writing “The Trouble with Geniuses Part One and Two” is for individuals to reevaluate the way that society defines and calculates a genius. According to Gladwell, society continues to make the mistake of not understanding what an outlier truly is. I believe Gladwell’s true purpose is to have individuals question the norms that have been set into place by society when it pertains to labeling someone as a genius. Specifically, those who are put into a position of prestige and or great admiration. Gladwell, wants individuals to question the determining factors which allows people to become an outlier.
A passion, by definition, is strong and barely controllable emotion. But in the book, Chad Foster tells us that a passion is something that one greatly likes or desires. He tells us to never underestimate the power of our passion and that life is boring and dull without one. This can help us in the real world because we can turn our passions into jobs, like Elton John and his music, and it gives us something to do in our free time that
Every single person on this earth has a passion. No, I am not talking about fruit. I am talking about is something that can put a person on top of the world or put a 40 ton wrench right in the center of a person’s gut. Passion. Comparable to a lot of guys in this world my passion is sports. Michigan State University athletics. Consequently, when a sports beat writer imposed that my team... my team 's defense was not “good” enough to compete at the highest collegiate level at the college football playoffs. Well, I just had to tell him why he was wrong.
Passion. The word in itself provokes zeal, and saying it brings about thoughts of perseverance and enthusiasm. The definition of the word passion describes it as a “ strong and barely controllable emotion.” This emotion commonly presents itself in the case of affection, politics, and religion. Multiple representatives of passion become apparent in the characters of “The Chosen”, by Chaim Potok. By the definition of religious passion, Reb Saunders, David Malter, and Danny Saunders all strongly embody this emotion.
A passion is something that makes you drive forward in life, but not something you want or that you are trying to get. In the novel The Contender by Robert Lipsyte, there is a high school dropout who does not know what he is going to do with his life while everyone around him is either reaching their goals or slowly dying. In The Contender people without a passion seem to die off and it is the same about people with bad passions. The high school dropout, Alfred is very lost and does not know what to do in life. Alfred’s best friend James is also a dropout and later on in the book a drug addict. Major, a drug dealer tries to pull down Alfred, his only passion is drugs and money. In the context of The Contender people with a
Gladwell’s intentions for this book include persuading readers to see success the same way as he does and also to enlighten or teach the world about what factors play into being successful considering his inspiration for this book was that no one truly knew what success meant. Malcolm writes, “In Outliers, I want to convince you that these kinds of personal explanations of success don’t work. People don’t rise from nothing” (Gladwell, 19). Malcolm’s intended audience is any and all people because his goal was to education the world on this topic. Outliers appeals to an audience because people want to discover what success stories are and how people become prosperous. There were various success stories told throughout each chapter, Malcolm describes his purpose for this as follows, “This is a book about outliers, about men and women who do things that are out of the ordinary. Over the course of the chapters ahead, I’m going to introduce you to one kind of outlier after another: to geniuses, business tycoons, rock stars, and software programmers. We’re going to uncover the secrets of a remarkable lawyer, look at what separates the very best pilots from the pilots who have crashed planes, and try to figure out why Asians are so good at math. And in examining the lives of the remarkable among us - I will argue that there is something profoundly wrong with the way we make sense of success” (Gladwell, 18). All of these stories are unique and different and are
Passion is defined by the life and death of Jesus Christ. Because He laid down his life for me, I find it my duty to live for Him and through Him. All of my values are rooted in Christ and our relationship. I believe that the community service, leadership, and character of those found in the National Honors
Lastly, Gladwell incorporates the audience’s interests to appeal to them in an emotional and engaging method in the subject of the argument, success. The goal for many is to be successful in their specific craft, and even from the title Outliers: The Story of Success Gladwell advertises his own story of success, and the audience believes if they follow the methods that successful people use then they will be successful too. Gladwell gives testimonies of people that would be predictably successful but never made it far due to not having a community to support them to open opportunities. He describes Chris Langan’s lack of credibility and success despite having a higher IQ than Albert Einstein and before he lets Langan describe a typical day
A wise man once said “Man is only great when he acts from passion.” When you hear the word passion, the first thing that might come to your mind is something related to love, and you’re not entirely wrong. According to Merriam- Webster’s dictionary, passion is defined as a strong feeling of enthusiasm or excitement for something or about doing something or a strong feeling (such as anger) that causes you to act in a dangerous way. All in all, it is a strong feeling, be it happiness, sadness, anger or liberality. You can be passionate about many things such as love, sports, food, or intimacy. However, it can also mean having a strong yearning for something.
