Doubt Report By Juan Maldonado To fully understand the film I had to look back and research the time period of which the story took place. The film is set in 1964, the year after the Kennedy Assassination. It was a time of change, both in society in general and in the church. Sister Aloysius and Father Flynn represent conflicting views on how the church should function. She belongs to a more corporate conservative school of thought, believing the church as separate from society at large and not needed anything to change. He, on the other hand, had a different belief with the changes being after Kennedy death. It’s seems like the problem of the past can resurface in the future. The difference of one opinion can make you hate or dislike …show more content…
At the start I thought that he did make passes at Donald but again there’s no proof. Then I thought about Father Flynn’s defensive nature and the words choice he uses love’ and ‘compassion’, both of which are clearly right and are important to demonstrate. He believes and wants to care about Donald more than Sister Aloysius. But true care for someone is defined by Jesus as a selfless love (John 15:13), whereas to take advantage of someone who is lonely and suffering is for self-gain and is acting on his/her own desire . It is not healthy and it is not the way that God meant for love to be shown between two …show more content…
When she voices her suspicions about the relationship between Father Flynn and Donald, Mrs. Miller’s reaction is not what she was expecting, and I wasn’t expecting either. What I learn is that Donald had some deep underling issue and that his nature at a young age could and would really destroy a child. Donald felt like his father hated him and that what caused him to take a drink of alcohol in the priest room. I thought to myself if Father Flynn played on this boy emotion for self-gain than that’s wrong, and he should be thrown under the jail and throw away the key. Then I thought Father Flynn did what he could do to save the child, and that’s showed him love and compassion. In my opinion that’s the Godly thing to do. I also felt bad for Mrs. Miller for accepting the situation, but she did it out of protection for her son.. She is aware that Donald’s sexual preferences were not the norm of that time. This is one of the reasons that Mr. Miller beats his son and would do so again if Donald had to be removed from St
The movie Avalon presents both sides of American Dream. In the beginning, Sam Krichinsky is ecstatic to tell the story about his arrival to America in 1914. He talks about the 4th of July celebration and his first job as a wallpaper hanger with his brothers. The Krichinsky brothers do the same work; therefore, they have same amount of income. They also live together and save money to bring more relatives to America to prosper. This shows that they have strong family circle and support each other. Times change and Sam Krichinsky and his family moves to suburbs. Sam’s son Jules with his cousin open discount appliances store. That is upside of American Dream shown in the movie. One can work hard, go on his own and achieve success and happiness. At the same time, that creates discontent with Sam’s brothers Gabriel and Nathan. Sam allows his family to cut turkey on thanksgiving before Gabriel’s arrival which makes Gabriel extremely upset. He blames this on Jules getting rich and Sam’s family not having respect for his brothers anymore. He also says that it is a tradition and sign of respect to wait for a family member before starting a dinner. This is a negative side of American Dream. Some of the relatives get ahead, some stay behind and it becomes a reason for quarrel. Also, Sam and his wife Eva move out from Jules house to live on their own. It is a good thing, because their families will be separate and have more space. The wife does not have to live with in-laws anymore. All
In the story Father Flynn can be described as charming and caring. Although father Flynn can described with nice characteristics trait Sister Aloysius does not see the person
However, some critics may argue that Father Flynn is actually guilty, and there are numerous reasons that lead to this indication. For example, Father Flynn does express traits of denial and defensiveness throughout the play. While Sister Aloysius is questioning Father Flynn about the incident with Donald, Father Flynn does try to change the subject to other ideas. He changes the subject from the accusation about him and Donald to the Christmas pageant and Sister James’s brother. Additionally, Father Flynn also walks out on some of the meetings with Sister Aloysius because he might be scared to accidentally make a mistake and slip up, which would than rile Sister Aloysius to claim that he molested Donald.
When one’s unquestioned reputation is being attacked one often feels obligated to make a plan to cover up accused actions to save their reputation. When Sister Aloysius first accuses Father Flynn of having an inappropriate relationship with Donald Muller he responds, “Happened? Nothing happened. I had a talk with the boy.” (32). Finally, Father Flynn says he did have some interaction with Donald after denying it for a while, but he still clearly states nothing happened. Father Flynn ends the conversation by saying, “I don’t wish to continue this conversation at all further. And if
Sister Aloysius quickly made up her mind that Father Flynn was guilty of doing something to Donald before consulting with him. Although, before being told about the incident, Sister Aloysius had already been keeping a close watch on the two males. She seen Father Flynn grab a child’s wrist, and suspected something would happen to Donald due to race. Sister Aloysius is uncomforted by affection so she becomes concerned after the incident between Father Flynn and the child’s wrist, which creates some suspicion toward Father Flynn. In the end, of the play she tells Sister James about how she doubts herself because there was no actual
Alfred Hitchcock’s film Shadow of a Doubt is a true masterpiece. Hitchcock brings the perfect mix of horror, suspense, and drama to a small American town. One of the scenes that exemplifies his masterful style takes place in a bar between the two main characters, Charlie Newton and her uncle Charlie. Hitchcock was quoted as saying that Shadow of a Doubt, “brought murder and violence back in the home, where it rightly belongs.” This quote, although humorous, reaffirms the main theme of the film: we find evil in the places we least expect it. Through careful analysis of the bar scene, we see how Hitchcock underlies and reinforces this theme through the setting, camera angles,
To begin, as one is reading the play they start to see that everything Father Flynn was accused of he has a reasonable explanation for. The primary accusation of Father Flynn molesting Donald Muller was supported by the fact that he was alone with him in the rectory. However, Father Flynn quickly denied this because the reason he was alone was for a meeting with Donald about a rule he had broken. Donald had drank church wine on a Tuesday morning while he was serving as an altar boy and Mr. McGinn had caught him, which is why Father Flynn had to have a private meeting with Donald. As Father Flynn is explaining why he was alone with Donald he states, “Donald Muller served as an altar boy last Tuesday morning. After Mass, Mr. McGinn caught him in the sacristy drinking altar wine. When I found out, I sent for him” (Shanley 33). As one reads this quote it is clear that Father Flynn has nothing to hide because he tells the boy’s secret that could possibly get him in trouble and kicked off the altar boys. If Father Flynn was trying to hide something he would most likely not throw the boy under the bus for a crime. Also, the tone of the statement is relaxed and
The movie ‘Her’ is the story about Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a man who develops a relationship with Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an intelligent computer operating system personified through a female voice. At the beginning of the film, Theodore is completely inept when it comes to how to make relationship with person, specifically women. However, after he gets to know Samantha, an OS program, a feeling of true love develops inside of Theodore’s mind. Then he realizes how he was fatuous in his past. Throughout the film, the director (Spike Jonze) uses five distinct color schemes to correspond Theodore’s feeling and situation.
“Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty.” Based upon a few indirect details and various intuition, the ultra-strict, Sister Aloysius Beauvier believes that one of the priests, Father Flynn, at the St. Nicholas Catholic Church and School has been molesting a twelve-year-old boy named Donald Muller, the school 's only African American student. To help her, Sister Aloysius recruits a young and naive nun, Sister James, to assist her in monitoring the suspicious yet charismatic Father Flynn. She also addresses her concerns to Donald 's mother, who surprisingly is not horrified or even shocked by the allegations. She is more concerned about her son getting through high school and avoiding a beating from his dad instead of what her son is going through at school. Close to the ending of the play
Yet, Sister Aloysius is severe, suspicious and cynical, making a point of showing students without softness and discouraging signs of weakness with the nuns under her. There is a specific scene where she suspects a boy who went home with a nosebleed intentionally inflicted it him, and she feels that ballpoint pens, as opposed to fountain pens, offer students the easy way out. Sister Aloysius’s determined attitude makes her unsympathetic; she is suspicious of Father Flynn only because her personally dislikes his compassionate manner. There is some doubt as to Father Flynn’s true nature. Is he a reasonable, kind gentleman or a guilty child molester with a sweet
If these examples aren’t enough to convince someone of Thomas King’s mistakes, the comparison to male characters might just do it. An article posted to The Atlantic titled It 's Frustratingly Rare to Find a Novel About Women That 's Not About Love by Kelsey McKinney has a tag line that perfectly sums this point: “Literary girls don 't take road-trips to find themselves; they take trips to find men”. There is no better way to explain exactly what happens in King’s novel. Lionel goes on his journey of self discovery throughout the novel, deciding if he should go back to university, if he should quit working at Bill Bursum’s shop, etc. Charlie thinks back on his past with his father, and Eli relives his life from moving out of the reservation to coming back, and leaving a life behind. Though their stories may have some hints of love, and of women whom they wish to be with or perhaps wish to get away from, their journeys of self discovery are rooted internally for the most part. They are about how they feel, and who they have come to be, their identity as indigenous Canadians. Meanwhile, Latisha and Alberta are stuck recovering from past relationships with men. They are trying to navigate in a world built for men and establish their identities as independent women. Notice now, how one group’s identity has nothing to do with their gender, and notice how that is not the women.

Generally Accepted Accounting Principles are standards in accounting that are used in America to enable the recording and reporting of financial information in a uniform way. These standards are established by the Financial Accounting Standards Board with is the body that is responsible for developing and establishing these standards in the United States. Currently, the body is mandated with the task of setting up accounting standards for non-governmental organizations. While GAAP is mainly used as the accounting standards for financial recording and reporting, the source of this principle originates from various places because there is no single reference for them.
As a result of Sister Aloysius’ determination to get rid of Father Flynn not only does she not get the answers she needed to be sure of his behavior, she can only wonder that with his new
Sometimes there are things in life we have to learn, wheather is by someone we don 't know or things we have to see for ourselves. The movie, Scent of a woman played a big part in the example of growing up, and becoming a man. There was a blind man by the name of Lieutenant Frank Slade, and a high schooler named Charlie. What seemed like a short weekend job to earn some extra money, became a moment that could change Charlie 's way of life forever, and the Lieutenant was just the persson for him to experience this with.
