Have you ever found yourself in awe at the videos of the three-year-old singing "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"? It doesn 't help either, that the little kid is so cute and chubby you just want to pinch his or her cheeks and talk to him or her in Barney mode. Well, today with one of the biggest boy bands, their career is essentially the identical way. The band One Direction, is a combination of five talented, handsome, young men who use their good looks to their advantage, basically the same way the pretentious and self-gratifying parent does when they put their child 's video up on YouTube. The boys themselves; Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles, and Zayn Malik are anything but ordinary personality wise. However, in …show more content…
One Direction even brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “over-used love songs.”
Although love songs are normally the topic for all artists, it’s also the biggest in boy bands. One Direction started with a love song and is most likely going to end with one too. In their newest, well-liked songs, "You and I," it is all about not having a typical relationship, and no one understanding their love. The music video was pretty popular, even too many critics. The Australian production company “Oh Yea Wow” have accused One Direction and their managers of “regurgitating" a video for Clubfeet’s song “Everything You Wanted.” In their song “Best Song Ever,” (the music video even broke the world record for most views in 24 hours) One Direction was once again accused of stealing a song. This time of The Who’s track “Baba O’ Riley.” When I say “over-used,” I really mean “over used.” I 've also never understood why they write these songs about love, when their audience is typically twelve-year old girls; the age love shouldn 't even be considered. On their song “Midnight Memories,” it was also pointed out it has the same similar structure as Def Leppard’s song “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” In addition, on their very first single "What Makes You Beautiful" (I bet you can 't guess what it’s about!), it’s all about a girl not knowing what she’s worth, and how everything about her makes her unique and beautiful. This song was even accused of plagiarism of the song
Charlotte Church speaks out about this issue saying “The culture of demeaning women in pop music is so ingrained as to become routine, from the way we are dealt with by management and labels, to the way we are presented the public” (Chase par. 9). This leads to questions, for example, must women be sexualized to gain greater earnings? Does sex truly sell? When we examine artists such as Julia Hotter, HAIM, or Polica, we perceive them as strong artists who are unrestricted in their art by their gender or sexuality. However, when comparing their success, sexualized women have dominated the music industry. Chase explains that women are allowed to fill three main roles in modern pop music: One of the Girls’ Girls, the Victim/ Torch Singer, and Unattainable Sexbot. Artists such as Beyoncé would be considered “One of the Girls’ Girls” who are for women power and are considered empowering. Adele is considered a “Victim/Torch Singer” even though she does not use sexuality to sell records, lyrically, she perceives the wronged women and creates a state of despair. An “Unattainable Sexbot” would be, without a doubt, Miley Cyrus, whose main goal is to be the most successful in the music industry by being hyper-sexualized and unrealistic. If an artist does not fit into one of these categories, they generally have a much harder time being one of the most successful in the music
The movie ‘Her’ is the story about Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a man who develops a relationship with Samantha (Scarlett Johansson), an intelligent computer operating system personified through a female voice. At the beginning of the film, Theodore is completely inept when it comes to how to make relationship with person, specifically women. However, after he gets to know Samantha, an OS program, a feeling of true love develops inside of Theodore’s mind. Then he realizes how he was fatuous in his past. Throughout the film, the director (Spike Jonze) uses five distinct color schemes to correspond Theodore’s feeling and situation.
“I love you, please say you love me too,” she sings. “I love you / I will be your light, shining through your eyes.” Still yet, we have “Crazy in Love” by Beyonce’ and Jay-Z, hip-hop artists. “Your love’s got me looking so crazy right now,” they sing/rap. “Looking so crazy in love.” Despite the musical differences between all these artists, all three songs/genres were able to give light to the theme of love. And even though the theme may be the same, the music and words were not. So even though two songs may have a theme that is similar, themes in music add diversity.
The film Pleasantville shows the changes in American society over the past 50 years by placing two teenagers into the Pleasantville show, which was from the 50’s. The movie depicts how there is no longer the “American Dream” and no longer a perfect way of life and the changes the world has made. The world that the teenagers come from is filled with sex, drugs, money, and is very different from the way the world was in which the Pleasantville Show took place in. Morals and values have changed in the people and in society that the teenagers came from and shows it would be impossible to return back to the kind of life style the world had in the 50’s.
The most prevalent issue observed in the lyrics and music videos was gender and sexuality. This was in issue that was present and reoccurring in all of the top songs but occurred in different ways. This was no surprise though because we live “In a culture where sex and gender are centrally important” (2015; 73). The issue arises in the genre of music because of the way gender and sexuality is presented. In the top song “Die a Happy Man’ by Thomas Rhett, objectification was presented in both the lyrics and the music video. In the lyrics he says “Baby that red dress brings me to my knees, Oh but black dress makes it hard to break” and goes on to say “You’re a saint, you’re a Goddess, the cutest, the hottest, a master piece” (lyrics). It seems that his goal is to complement her, but he is objectifying her by judging her femininity (2015; 203). He also does this in the music video by having the girl in a bikini the whole time. Not only was the women objectified, but Thomas exposed a stereotypical relationship consequence. In modern society men tend to make a stereotype that they have to give up everything to be with a woman. Thomas did this in his lyrics when he talks about how he could “never get to see the Northern lights” or “never get to build my mansion in Georgia or drive a sports car up the coast of California” (lyrics). The second song was “Strip It Down” by Luke Bryan. In this song Luke definitely introduces gender roles in both the lyrics and the video. The song
In the film Juice, there were four black teenage boys named Que, Raheem, Steals, and Bishop. They lived in Harlem, New York, were poverty has been an issue the past few decades. In Harlem there was a lot of crime, gang activity, drug abuse, shooting, and homicides among the black community. Each of the young men were living in a single parent household in a worn down neighborhood where they faced conflict with other local gang members from different racial backgrounds. Que was a local disc jockey trying to become known in the music industry. He and his friends would frequently skip school and go to a local hang-out spot where criminal activity took place. All four young men were involved in some form of petty/property crime around Harlem. They so much as skipped class to steal music albums from a small record store in their neighborhood. Bishop is one of Que’s best friends; they were so close people knew them as brothers around the hood. Out of all the four men, Bishop was the only one with two parents in the household. Even with both parents, Bishop was mostly involved in crime. He did not have a very strong bond with his father which took a toll on his relationship with other people. Bishop used his time at the hang-out spot to sell drugs; he made sure to carry a weapon and was always fighting with other gang members, he had a hard time fitting into society. In the movie Bishop stated, “I’m tired of running from police, I’m tired running from Chris (which
From “Sons of Anarchy” to “Nip Tuck”, FX has created popular TV dramas over the years. However, none of them has had such significant popularity as Ryan Murphy’s “American Horror Story”, known for its blood and gore, and “Glee” known for its sharp social commentary. The creation of these TV series led to the drastic rise to stardom of Ryan Murphy’s career. Though “Glee’s” stint on TV has ended, it was a highly acclaimed series with high ratings. Today, “American Horror Story”, his project following “Glee”, is now one of TV’s highest rated series, which is an especially peculiar accomplishment for a TV series of this genre. Therefore, when the creation of a new horror TV series was announced, nothing but sheer greatness was expected.
The film Ordinary People tells the story of a family in which one of 2 sons dies in a boating accident. The guilt-ridden brother attempt to take his own life out of survivor’s guilt. Rather than facing the issues as a family, the family avoids the subject and tries to carry on as normal. That is, until the past catches up with them. Much of the aftermath issues the family face could have been avoided using conflict management skills and communication. The mother, Beth Jarrett, avoids any conversation involving her son’s death and her other son’s attempted suicide. Conrad, the suicidal son, copes by shutting off all of his emotions and becomes violent and blames himself for the incident involving his brother rather than going through the usual grieving process. The husband, Calvin, tried to face the issue, but buckled under the pressures of his family and got swallowed up in the turmoils of neglecting the problem.
Flicka is a heart wrenching movie about the love of family, nature, and horses. This movie shows you the summer of a ranchers daughter. Katy McLauglin (Alison Lohman) is the teenage daughter of a horse rancher who is looking to hand over the reins of the family business. While her family is on the ranch, Katy is studing at a private school feeling like her own kind of misfit. One day, while out riding, Katy finds a beautiful black mustang and instantly feels an emotional connection with the wild horse. Katy begs her father, Rob McLaughlin (Tim McGraw), to let her keep the animal but he is convinced that the mustang would be bad for both his thoroughbred horses and his daughter. But Katy is certain she can break the
Will boy bands fade away? In the 1960s it was all about The Beatles and “BeatleMania”. After taking over not only Europe, but also America, The Beatles broke up ten years later and the boy band era was over. Fast forward twenty-three years later, new boy bands came to the scene. NSYNC and Backstreet Boys took over America from the early 1990s to the early 2000s. Boy bands exploded commercially and dominated the United States’ market, but soon the second boy band era was over. With a new wave of solo artist making it big in the United States, no one thought that boy bands would ever make a comeback. Surprisingly in 2010, Simon Cowell put together five teenagers on the show The X Factor without knowing they would soon take over the world. Five

The movie "Alive" is a shocking true story of an Uruguayan Rugby Team that crashed their plane in the middle of the Andes mountains. The Uruguayan plane crash carrying 45 passengers to Chile unfortunately resulted only with the survival of 16 students. Through a traumatic shocking experience, the movie reenacts the event of the crash. This movie demonstrates various examples of the importance of psychological and physiological needs in our daily lives. It also outlines how the survivors had to accomplish particular essential needs in order to ensure their physiological and psychological health. The movie "Alive" is a fascinating story that demonstrates heroism and faith through a team mainly consisted of teenage
Many young people seek to use music to help themselves be more accepted in the world, so that they can be easily categorisable in the mainstream. Many girls of ages 9 13 may have an interest in a popular boy band' of the time. This is an example of how, though a girl's identity could be partly influenced by such a band, ultimately, their music and appeal is limited in scope because after four or five years the band is likely to have split up. The media promotes such a band because it targets girls who are seeking to find an identity and because these years
The film that I choose to analysis is The Stepford Wives. The Stepford Wives is a Sci-Fi film which was released in 2004. It was directed by Frank Oz, who is famously known for his acting roles. Frank Oz has done the voice of Yoda in the Star Wars series, and several Muppets’ characters, such as Miss Piggy. There are three editions to this story, the book, the 1975, and 2004 film. The 2004 version varies from the others, as it has a slightly different story line. In the 2004 version, the women tend to hold higher up and specialty jobs, where in the other two, the characters were stay at home mothers with a hobby in photography (Thompson, 2009).
Filmed over the course of 12 years, Richard Linklater cast Ellar Coltrane as Mason as we follow his growth and childhood experience as he learns about life and himself. It sounds like an incredible idea and Linklater does deserve approbation for taking this approach, but 'Boyhood' fails to work as a character study. In fact, 'Boyhood' really does not have much to say besides "life goes by fast".
