Chicago:

Over the past few years, cities around the United States have increasingly been touting the vigor of their music industries. These cities have been commissioning reports that show the undeniable importance of music and the music industry to the local economy and urban centre. Chicago is no exception; Chicago measured the size of the music industry in their city and applied the same economic metrics to other cities across the country in order to obtain comparative stats about other music cities.
The city of Chicago believes that “the music industry, despite its relatively small size, may be a driver of growth: music industry jobs levels are strongly correlated statistically to increase overall employment in counties nationwide. Considered …show more content…

“With competition for tourist dollars increasingly fierce, and with urban developers and planners increasingly aware of the need to woo the “creative class” by investing in amenities that improve the quality of life, what goes in music clubs, ballrooms, large auditoriums, festivals and even basements and garages is important to the future of cities.”
The Report on the Music Industry in Chicago by “The Chicago Music Commission” discovered several key findings such as:
• “Among the 50 most populous metropolitan areas, Chicago ranks 5th in the number of musical groups and artists employed. Nearly 2000 individuals are on the payroll of musical entertainment business, out of a total estimated at almost 50,000 nationwide. Chicago is home to twice as many musicians as Seattle and ten times as many as Austin.
• The core component of Chicago’s music industry employs nearly 13,000 people in 831 businesses. Chicago has the third largest music workforce, third largest number of music businesses and third largest payroll in the country, roughly 280 …show more content…

Record producers, sound recording studios, music publishers, instrument makers and sellers, and radio stations all are crucial to the operation of the music industry as a whole. Chicago, along with other cities in the U.S and other countries across the globe, all concur with this statement.
Chicago is considered a Great Music City but it has not carved out a niche market such as Nashville or New Orleans has done. There is no equivalent to Beale Street or the French Quarter in Chicago and there is no city-level policy in place to encourage or drive the creation of music districts in the city. Lastly, Chicago has not established itself as a music trade show hub in the way that Austin has done with its highly successful South by Southwest Conference/Festival.
It is the hope that in the future, the city of Chicago will address their shortcomings and make their music industry visible to its competitors, visitors and citizens and show how strong Chicago’s Music Industry is compared to other cities and countries around the
