The National Football League is the most popular sport in America. The NFL is the most lucrative sports business in the world by generating 9 billion dollars a year. For whatever reason peoples eyes are glued to the television every Sunday, whether it be to root on their hometown team or to follow their fantasy football team. The league has been under fire for the safety of the players for a very long time, but more so in the last couple of years. The biggest part of the scrutiny is that repeated head trauma can cause long-term brain damage. The rules must change in the game of football because it has become too dangerous and creates a long-term threat to players. Equipment has improved tremendously over the years to help with the safety of players. The original helmet did not even have a facemask. The next improved helmet only had a single bar going across the face. Now the helmets have extra padding supporting all parts of the head and some of the craziest looking facemasks you have ever seen. So how could the game be getting more dangerous if the equipment is getting better? That is because players are getting bigger, faster and stronger. In 1930 defensive lineman Morris Badgro was 6 feet tall and weighed 190 pounds. By 1967 defensive lineman Alan Page was 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighed 245 pounds.
