Everyday Americans all over the nation proudly wave a red, white and blue flag. A flag with thirteen horizontal stripes, equal in width, and fifty white five-pointed stars in a blue rectangle in the upper-left corner. A flag that symbolizes the unity and strength of the country. As the flag is flown all over the nation it proudly holds the name of the American Flag. As many people see the flag some may begin to wonder why the American Flag is red, white, and blue and what the meaning of the flag is. The United States Flag is the third oldest of the National Standards of the world (USA Citylink). It was first adopted on June 14, 1777 by the Marine Committee of the Second Continental Congress. They adopted a resolution establishing an official flag for the new nation. The resolution stated, “Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation.” (Greenstein) The flag was first flown on August 3, 1777 the site of the present city of Rome, New York. It has emerged triumphantly from eight great National Conflicts. It flew at Saratog, Yorktown, Palo Alto, Gettysburge, Minala bay, Chateau-Thierry, and Iwo Jima. The American Flag bears witness to the development of our national boundaries, natural resources, and the structure of our civilization. (USA Citylink) Since 1777 the flag has undergone several revisions to reach its current design. Between 1777
The American flag consists of thirteen horizontal stripes, with seven red stripes alternating among six white. In the upper left corner there is a rectangular blue space that contains fifty white stars. The thirteen stripes symbolize the thirteen original colonies of the United states of America and the stars represent the fifty states of the Union. White is said to symbolize purity and innocence. Red symbolizes strength and courage, and blue symbolizes vigilance, perseverance and justice. The flag in simple words is a piece of cloth that has meaning. The flag stands for everything in our country’s past.
The American Flag is symbol of freedom to those individuals living in the United States. To the soldiers who fight for our freedom, seeing the flag they honor and salute disgraced and disrespected is like a “slap in the face”. Topics discussed throughout this paper are as follows The Star Spangled Banner, American traditions involving the flag, how to fold the flag and what each fold symbolizes, how to properly handle and when/when not to fly the flag as well as, flag burning, a few major case laws about the flag, pending Supreme Court cases regarding the American flag, the reasons for the decisions made, how things have changed over time and some arguments for/against, pros/cons will be discussed so that we all
First I would like to include some information about our american flag and how it came about. In the British colonies of North America before the Revolution, each of the 13 colonies had its flag. On Jan. 2, 1776, the first flag of the United States was raised at Cambridge, Mass., by George Washington. Known as the Grand Union flag, it consisted of 13 stripes, alternate red and white, with a blue canton bearing the crosses of St. George and St. Andrew. Congress, on June 14, 1777, enacted a resolution “that the Flag of the United States be 13 stripes alternate red and white, that the Union be 13 stars white in a blue field representing a new constellation.” On Jan. 13, 1794, Vermont and Kentucky having been admitted to the Union,
All Americans are familiar with the Pledge of Allegiance, even if they cannot always recite it perfectly, but probably relatively few know that the original Pledge did not include the words “under God.” The original Pledge of Allegiance, published in the September 8, 1892, issue of the Youth’s Companion, ran thus: I pledge allegiance to my flag, and to the Republic for which it stands: one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and justice for all. (Djupe 329) In 1923, at the first National Flag Conference in Washington, DC, it was argued that immigrants might be confused by the words “my Flag,” and it was proposed that the words be changed to “the Flag of the United States.”
The Confederate Flag, otherwise known as “Stars and Stripes”, was a battle flag adopted by the Confederate Congress In March 1861. It was originally
The first state flag was actually shown and presented by South Carolina stamp act protesters in 1765. The banner that the protesters displayed did indeed have not one but three white crescents on a blue background.
What do you do when you see the flag? Do you take off your hat and put your right hand on your heart and sing the National Anthem? While you do this, think of the men who fought for our freedom. They helped us get the freedom to do what we want and not get told what to do. The freedom we have today is all because we won the wars and we earned our freedom. The flag represents our freedom that we have today. America is the free country and we have the freedom of speech! We don’t have to worry about starvation or the lack of water because in Africa, they have some freedom and little water. Every day, we have the freedom to go to whatever store we want. We can wear what we want and do what we want
Historically, flags have been a symbol of unity and patriotism for countries around the world; however, this is not always the case. One particular incident of this presents itself in the essence of the Confederate Flag. The Confederate Flag is a symbol of Southern nationalism dating back to the American Civil War. Even today, it is used by many people to express their southern culture and pride. However, originally, the flag represented the aspirations in the South for the precedence of States rights over Federal rule. The Confederate Flag is also associated with a much more negative aspect. This Flag epitomizes the prejudice and white supremacy associated with the Civil War. This was because the among the former things slavery was the most
Doing this report what I learned was Francis has been designed the American Flag 28th times in different turns. In the 1777 and 1960 congress changed the shapes and designs and also arrangement of the U.S of American Flag and allowed stars and stripes to be added to reflect the admission of each new state. In Sept.11 1777 the, new stars and stripes formed part of the military at the battle of brandywine. What I also learned was Stars are a symbol of the heavens and the goals to which human kind aspires. Stripes are a symbol of rays of light from the sun. Over years the American Flag has been changed 27 times mostly. In 1777 the colors of the American Flag did not have a specific meaning. But the Great Seal did have a specific meaning.
During the time period of 1897-1932 the Civil War took place, which lead to the controversy of the American Flag. Through this disagreement two sides were created, one being the Southerners and the other being the Business Tendency who seen the Flag as just a logo (Head). For many years the flag was just considered a symbol of one side until September 17th 1787, when the Constitution was signed. Nine out of
During combat, it was hard for the soldiers to be away from their family and their homes, but their nationalism kept pushing them through battle after battle. The flags of both The Union and the Confederacy were great symbols of their countries that they did not want to let down. The Union’s flag still showed the unification America as a whole country. It had thirteen stripes, like our current flag, to represent the original thirteen colonies. There were flags made that got rid of stars to represent the states leaving to join the confederacy, but in the official Union flag, their stars remained, and in the beginning of the war, there were thirty-four stars on the flag, and thirty-six by the time the war had ended. The Confederate flags had changed three times during the war, but at the end and the most famous one is the Confederate Navy Jack Flag. This has an X filled with thirteen stars to represent the eleven states and the two slave states that were not officially part of the confederacy. These flags were used and displayed throughout the war as a symbol of both side’s
Over time, the appearance of the flag has changed, but it has always stood for the same principles. Although these principles have been applied differently, they cannot be erased. As long as time stands, the flag will always wave for justice, equality, and freedom. The flag has instilled bravery in America, so that
The American flag is the one object that is present in every room in almost every school across the country. This flag is present in almost every corner of the United States, but in schools it serves the purpose of striking patriotism into the students. The flag is a prominent object in every class room, it takes up a surprising amount of space and is large enough to be able to easily recognize it from the outer edges of the room itself. The flag is a symbol of the nation, across the world it is a symbol of freedom and progress. The primary purpose of the flag is to incite a feeling of patriotism, make a viewer feel proud to be part of the United States.
On that date, the National Flag Code was constructed by representatives of over 68 organizations, under the auspices of the National Americanism Commission of the American Legion. The code drafted by that conference was printed by the national organization of the American Legion and given out for nationwide distribution.
Born on June 14th of 1777, in Philadelphia. The flag dedicated to our brand new nation. Stars and stripes. Red, white, and blue. Today fifty stars in total, one for each state. Red stripes for our fearless courage and integrity, and our self-sacrifice
