There are so many natural disasters throughout the world that happen every day; some worse than others. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake would be one of the worse disasters. Many people were killed and wounded on that day. Although the earthquake lasted less than a minute, it still caused the worst natural disaster in the country’s history. The California earthquake is known to be one of the most remarkable earthquakes of all time.
San Francisco is known to be the “Paris of America”. It was very popular in industry and culture at the time. San Francisco had about 410,000 locals and kept gaining more and more rapidly. The day before the devastating and terrifying event, everyone was going on throughout the day like they normally would. No one was expecting what was about to happen that next morning.
The next morning at 5:12 a.m., on April 18, 1906 an enormous earthquake shook San Francisco. It was an estimate of 7.8-8.3 on the Richter scale. Although only lasting about 40-60 seconds, it destroyed many homes and businesses and killed numerous people. Many were left homeless, without a place to go. Out of the 410,000 people who lived in San Francisco, about 300,000 people were without a home and around 3,000 people lost their lives throughout the state of California. The earthquake was devastating. The survivors had to sleep in tents and wait in long lines for food.
The earthquake also started fires that burned for three days. Within just a few hours 52 fires had started.…
