In the book, Obasan, Joy Kogawa uses imagery to convey different symbolic meanings in Naomi's life. Naomi goes through a journey in the novel to uncover the truth of her past. One of the many literary elements that the novel possesses is animal imagery that emphasizes meaning and contributes to the novel's theme. Several animals are mentioned throughout the novel to represent Naomi's emotions and her journey. Kogawa utilizes the several instances of animal imagery in her novel, Obasan, to reveal the nature of power, both physically and emotionally, and the victim of power—Naomi. Animals such as the chicks represent Naomi's helplessness and innocence as she lived in a world without her mother or knowledge of her history. The animals that …show more content…
Instead of it being a dream, Naomi faces with the reality that she is now the beast being repressed by her master, Old Man Gower. Besides the fact that Naomi is four years old during this incident or that she could speak unlike the beast, the intimidation Old Man Gower has over her is strong enough to keep her silent. Old Man Gower is an adult who is supposed to protect her but he uses his power manipulate her.
Another way Old Man Gower controlled Naomi is through speech; not only did he explicitly tell her to not inform her mother of what is happening, Naomi cannot tell her mother even if she wants to. Old Man Gower creates the division between Naomi and her mother with this forbidden secret. As much as Naomi wants to tell her mother, she knows that her cry for help will end badly. As wide as Naomi wants her mouth to open, she, just as the chicken with its throat slit open, cannot speak a word. The chicken that gets tortured by Sho later on in the novel, cannot run away or cry for help, "Its beak is open, but there is no sound" (185). As Naomi watches the chicken suffer, she is watching herself being tortured by Old Man Gower. Here, Kogawa reminds Naomi of her painful past and how she did not stand up for herself, and still cannot stand up for the chicken. She watches and hopes for the torture to be over as she asks the boys if the chicken is dead yet, and she is
In today’s organizations conflict and power are important elements to the success of any company but can also create negative long term impacts if not addressed. Organizations require enough power within the leaders to get through conflict and enough conflict within individuals to create new innovations. Not all conflict is bad but when there is conflict individuals with power must assist in aligning conflict resolution to assist in understanding for everyone involved in the conflict. The need for successful conflict resolution is vital for employees so that they are capable of moving on and understanding why the conflict was overcome.
Because many people easily empathize with animals, novelists sometimes use animals as symbols in their writings to enhance the emotional connection with the reader. In When the Emperor Was Divine, Julie Otsuka uses wild and domestic animals to symbolize the confinement her main characters face. White Dog is a symbol of how the main characters leave their innocent past behind as they go to the internment camp. The freedom of the wild horses symbolizes the confinement of the protagonists. The tortoise represents the hope the characters can find, even in confinement.
Incorporating animals such as crows, dogs and coyotes. All three creatures were relevant towards the primary topic question, because each animal represents a profuse amount of flashbacks. These symbols are distinctively associated with Lena’s youth and Armstrong’s tie towards the story simultaneously. Crows in many cultures including First Nation’s outlook represents the catalyst of change, self-indulgence and death. Scientifically crows are knowns to have a strong ability to adapt with the admittance that in a First Nation culture they have great respect for the bird. This can indicate that irony was implied in the story through the symbolism of the crow because throughout Lena’s past she never was able to accommodate to the society's ways. With sentences like “ She had hated the dirt road and the mud in the spring and the dust in the summer, the ruts in the fall, and the undegraded snow in the winter”. The need to use the particular word “hate” demonstrates how clearly Lena despises her background. However, with the addition of the use of past tense in the word “hate” this displays how she has grown to accept her culture; in contrast to how she did in the past. The choice she made to move from the reserve to the city was undoubtedly not a pleasant choice. Due to the fact that throughout the whole story she refers to the longing for home, and receiving judgmental attention from society
“The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.” (Orwell). Although animals might only look like animals, they are symbols of deeper meanings. Throughout the fiction novel One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, by Ken Kesey, many symbols/motifs are presented in the form of animals that represent characters. These animals give meaning to the story and illuminate the plot by giving insight on character development, parallels, themes and thought processes of characters. McMurphy represents the Geese, Nurse Ratched is rendered as a wolf and the Patients are portrayed as hens and rabbits.
Throughout the world`s history, conflict and power has being an important topic to be discussed and analyzed among scholars and researchers. Conflict and power can be found in several areas and levels such as colonization process, wars, inside an organization, and even in our own family, and it can have political, economic, social and cultural reasons. However, there are different types of power such as Reward, Coercive, Referent, Expert and Legitimate, and three perspectives of conflict as Traditional, Interpretive and Critical. Based on these concepts, this paper will explain the conflict and the resolution pointed in a case study, then it will identify the type of power and the perspective of conflict presented in the case, and lastly it will relate the case study with the cooperation and competition model.
Some theorists believe that ‘power is everywhere: not because it embraces everything, but because it comes from everywhere… power is not an institution, nor a structure, nor possession. It is the name we give to a complex strategic situation in a particular society. (Foucault, 1990: 93) This is because power is present in each individual and in every relationship. It is defined as the ability of a group to get another group to take some form of desired action, usually by consensual power and sometimes by force. (Holmes, Hughes &Julian, 2007) There have been a number of differing views on ‘power over’ the many years in which it has been studied. Theorist such as Anthony Gidden in his works on structuration theory attempts to integrate basic
I feel the system is biased because there are inequalities among the representation and participation of interest groups and constituents in the political system. Unfortunately, poor and uneducated citizens aren’t as organized as interest groups, lobbyists and PACs because they lack the money, resources and connections necessary to influence congress members on legislative bills. It is evident that, “businesses, interest groups and labor unions are spending more than $100 million a month to lobby the federal government”(Associated Press, SFC, 3/7/98). “The actual population of interest groups in Washington surely reflects that there is a class bias in the membership of interest groups”(JBG).
People want power because it gives them control and dominance over others. Power gives the person who has it the ability to do whatever they want, say whatever they want and make people do what they want. In the play The Crucible by Arthur Miller the whole plot revolves around the theme of power. There is a never ending conflict of characters to keep, assert and acquire power. The most prominent characters that ultimately hurt the community the most due to their greed and lust for power are Deputy Governor Danforth, Reverend Parris and Abigail Williams. Although their relationship with power is different from one another they all have one thing in common. Parris, Danforth and Abigail all contribute to the demise of Salem because of their
Forms and uses of power during the Middle Ages were very influential to all aspects of societies. Power affected how people lived their lives during the Middle Ages because it had a role in religion and government. It also affected people differently according to what status you held within the community. Gender was also a factor in how power affected people during this time because men and women were treated very differently during the Middle Ages. Forms and uses of power during this time would alter societies for a very long time to come.
The body, mind, and soul of an individual are capable of becoming corrupted by power. Power makes one feel as if that person was a God, which is a sign of the corruption in that individual. According to Lord Actin, "Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely," states that power can make an individual vulnerable to corruption. The second portion of Lord Actin?s quote discusses absolute power corrupting absolutely which implies that absolute power can corrupt an individual as well as the individual?s surroundings. This idea of corruption can be located in fictional novels such as Animal Farm by George Orwell. Animal Farm is a story about animals dictated by a former animal comrade. The dictator in the novel, Napoleon,
Thematic Primer Essay An individual can achieve power from another individual in various ways depending on the type of power being achieved. An individual can acquire power based on his or her genes. However, power can also be taught to an individual. Likewise, Power can be inherited by an individual from an older generation.
In the world we live in today the roles of power and leadership are often confused. Although they have similar meanings, they can be distinctly defined between the latter. The key difference between the two is the term of effect. Power is the exercise of leadership, and leadership is only defined if you have power. Leadership always involves attempts on a leader to affect behavior or a follower in a situation, whereas power is not equivalent with influence on another person’s behavior. Although power and leadership have similar meanings, they are certain differences that can point out what makes
David Brin states that, "It is said that power corrupts, but actually it's more true that power attracts the corruptible." This statement is true; Power does not produce venal people, but it pronounces their corruptness. For example, Source D, which includes selected scenes from the movie series The Lord of the Rings, a scene from The Fellowship of the Ring displays the origins of the all the great rings of Middle Earth. Rings were given to Elves, Dwarves, and Humans. All the races were given this power with good intentions.
The use of the many literary elements form the basis of a strong message of inspiration for an audience of any age, to regain control and not lose sight of who they are as a person. During the last scene in resolution, where the protagonist poses with all the animals, symbolic of the problems she has now faced and has overcome she emerges victorious, setting a fighting, courageous
