Abstract It is time for our government to take a step away from war and look to meeting the needs of their own citizens. The need for health care reform is more evident than ever. The recession of America has caused many people hardship due to many lay-offs and the fact that insurance premiums have risen drastically. Many families are not receiving the health care that they require due to these circumstances. It affects not only the young, but the senior citizens as well. Many people do not qualify for the already present government health care programs such as Medicaid and Medicare. A government run, public option should be implemented as soon as possible. Out of all the American public, over 47 million Americans have no health care insurance. The cost of health care premiums has increased by 114 percent between 1999 and 2007. The everyday working person’s income has only increased by 27 percent (“Pay for What Works, 2008). In the article, “Cost Effective Medical Treatment"(2008), it states: “Health care costs are rising rapidly and it's believed that much of the rise in medical expenditures is attributed to the use of medical technologies that are too expensive to be justified". The health care industry is relying on high-tech medical devices to care for the patients. In the article, “Pay for What Works” (2008), it is stated: “the U.S. also has trouble controlling the spending habits of a health care colossus that is on track to consume 20 cents of every dollar by 2015, a tripling from 1970 levels” (p.32).What they fail to realize is that years ago these advances in technology did not exist and patients were still diagnosed and cared for. Of course, we have medical equipment now that can help personal conditions that could not be treated before, but are we overlooking the cheaper, just as efficient ways? Why should surgery automatically be performed when there is a medication that can handle the problem first? No wonder why so many Americans cannot afford health
