What technology is doing to our generation of children
As we all know, technology is changing, evolving and improving every day. Schools are incorporating technology into learning more and more everyday. Every month there is a new phone, tablet, television, laptop and even thousands of websites. While these devices come into handy and can be very helpful, they almost are taking over the world. Almost everyone has a cellular device; many being androids or iphones. Which surprisingly, the majority of these users are children. The apps they have on their phones being: Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, and more. Younger children have some of those and many games. There are a few questions that come with this use of technology and children: 1.) How much is enough? 2.) What’s acceptable? 3.) What are the effects?
The problem with technology and children is there are some benefits and some disadvantages. They both weigh out depending on the child and how they use the technology. Children’s learning and habits are very critical to their development and learning skills. Especially at young ages like birth to 6 years old, new pathways in their brain are being produced every day and their frontal lobes are active and starting to develop , working memory, attachments, emotions, and perception. And the prefrontal cortex is the last to develop, which explains why children and teenagers have a hard time with decision making and controlling their impulses. So using technology while children’s brains are in these stages can be beneficial if used the right way, but also have a negative effect if not used the right way and with limits.
As said before many schools are using technology in their education plans. Most test are taken online, studying for these test are online and are either homework or classwork assignments for children. Many children are intrigued and interested by technology and it is an easy way to keep children interested with all the animations and rewarding things. My sister is in the 2nd grade and they use a website called Iready and this prepares them for those standardized test and for homework. She actually enjoys it. Every time they
As our generations and technological world has vastly began to develop and expand rapidly, a repeated debate of whether technology use for young babies and children is beneficial or harmful to the physical and cognitive development of the child. As research has taken place to determine more answers around this topic, experts and parents from all different generations cast their opinion on the matter.
Most children and parents are so-called “addicted” to their smartphones, tablets, and computers. Our world is constantly changing, by using less paper and more screens. Is this really such a bad thing? Children can learn from the internet and actually become smarter because of it. The internet has the ability to benefit all ages, but especially children. The world is transforming into a digital place, which allows children to grow and learn, find answers in seconds, and keep up with current events around the world.
This article stresses the fact that technology can have various benefits on children whilst promoting early learning given the fact that the technology
According to a 2010 Kaiser Foundation study, which involved elementary children, concluded that on average 75 percent of parents allowed their children to have bedroom TV’s, North American households keep their TV’s on for 50 percent of the day, and use 7.5 hours of technology entertainment per day (Rowan). Technology is becoming a problem throughout the United States, especially in elementary aged kids. Parents are introducing technology as early as infants so that they understand certain information at an early age. When parents introduce technology at such an early age they are giving their children the advantage to be addicted to the wonders of it. Young children are at a high risk of brain damage with the advancement of technology. The more adults introduce technology to younger children the higher the chances of problems it causes. Technology has a negative effect on younger children and should have limitations on the age in which it is being introduced.
Technology has so quickly taken over our lives without questioning the affects, especially in Early Years as children begin to learn about the social world, away from the home environment. As the modern world develops an ever increasing reliance on technology, the affects on children and their learning are unknown. Technology has made our lives easier and enabled us to do things generations before us would have never even dreamt of, despite this, questions as to whether technology could have adverse affects on young children's learning need to be asked. Many people would suggest that allowing children to spend
In today’s society we are overwhelmed with technology. Technology is changing everyday, and will forever be a staple in our lives. The effect that technology has on our children has brought on some concerns and some praises. Children these days have no choice but to some how be influenced by the ever growing technology in our societies. Our common concern has been that although digital technology has boosted children’s talent for multitasking, their ability to process information deeply may be deteriorating (Carpenter, 2010). Many people have a wide range of opinions on if technology is having a positive influence on our children or a negative, there is a vast amount of evidence to support both of these arguments. Technology can refer to
Many parents nowadays don’t even second guess handing their kid an tablet or phone to occupy them while they are running errands or eating. This is likely because the most convenient way to get a kid’s undivided attention for a prolonged period of time- no matter how young or old they are- is to put a screen in front of them. It has been said by the older generations that we are too consumed with technology, but in a world that is fast becoming technology dependent, the question ‘how early is too early to introduce technology to kids?’ arises. Some say that it is never too early- to start right off the bat and incorporate it in their everyday lives. Others disagree and say that technology should not be used until after the age of two due to
Remember that scary, grotesque, evil monster we were all scared of when we were younger? Well, it's alive, we just can't see it, and it's called technology. As we all know, technology is changing and evolving every day; but it's almost as if the technology is taking over the minds of our future generation. Schools are incorporating technology into learning more and more all the time. Every month there is a new phone, tablet, television, laptop and even thousands of websites. These devices can come in handy and can be helpful, but they almost are consuming everyone's mind and minimizing critical thinking. Many of technology users are children or young adults. Although the use of technology in education can have some positive results, it has more negative effects that are affecting students.
My research project was inspired by my love of children and the many times I have observed children using technology. From this experience I noticed many young children are extremely familiar with technology and the use of technology can have both positive and negative effects on them. As I have researched into this topic, I have learnt there are many beneficial and harmful implications of technological use for children. A finding I have come across on multiple occasions is children should not be using or be in contact with any technology whilst they are under the age of 2. A positive implication includes using technology for educational reasons as opposed to entertainment purposes. Using technology for entertainment or for long periods of time can negatively affect the child psychologically. A key point from my research has lead me to understand technology can have a huge impact on a child’s mental, physical and emotional health. (154 words)
Included below is a summary about the article titled “How Young is Too Young for Technology,” by Josie Gurney-Read, and published by Telegraph. This article talks about the positive and negative impacts when exposing young children to technology. First, Read opens up the article explaining that by the time children start school, 70% are already confident in using a laptop, tablet or smart phone. Read also notes, that 17% of children under the age of three have their own device. The article then discusses that the American Academy of Pediatrics says that children under the age of two should be discouraged from using technology and that preschool kids shouldn’t be using devices for more than two hours per day (Read). Our oldest son Elliott is the least like his family, where my husband and myself have a strong work ethic it is a struggle to get him to do anything. I firmly believe this is more from the nurture aspect, when it came to things that interested him football, friends, technology he was interested but things that needed to be done day to day it was like pulling teeth. He use to be a go getter, never being told to do anything. Things really changed when he got his first cell phone, you wouldn't think something as small as a phone can change someone but it has and I've seen it in all of my children so far. He was our experiment child, sadly most first born children are, So I strongly feel technology has ruined my children's minds, and made them
I would have to say that technology is ruining children's lives. The more new things come up the more lazy we get. I would have to say that having a phone is very distracting, but I am able to stay off of it. Not many kids have grown up to be on electronics, but now every kid in the US has some type of device that distracts them from going outside. Not many people tell their kids that they need to go outside and to be active. More and more kids now a days are lazy and don’t do anything. So many kids think that they can function while on the internet, but in reality they can’t. For example, my brother thinks that he will die if he doesn’t get to play his video games. My mother only allows him to play for an hour and only if he has his homework
With a flip of a switch or press of a button, Parents can have their child entertained for hours on end. Televisions and Tablets are the twenty-first century babysitters. The average child spends an astounding 7.5 hours per day on some form of technology (Rowan 2), when the recommend allotted amount of time should be no more than two hours (Kaneshiro 1). Technology is rapidly evolving, making limitless possibilities available for entertainment. This virtual “babysitter” enables the parents to devote all their time and effort into their work or engross in technology with limited amounts of distraction from the children. Although, the parents are able to have free time, excessive amounts of screen time is proven to be detrimental to their child’s health and overall well-being. The technology that is drastically making life easier is a big blessing, but at the same time is a big curse.
Curtis writes an article in how technology is changing children. She argues that technology is not all negative towards the children and that it also provides useful things children can use. For example, she claims “Tablets or smartphones allow children to access a wide range of educational apps and services that can help boost their math and logic skills, packaged in the appealing form of a game” (Curtis 2013). There are educational apps for tablets and phones, in which teach children “math and logic skills”. Some apps in which Curtis says are good for children is Mathletics and Minecraft. (Curtis 2013). Even though Curtis argues that technology has a positive outcome for our children, she also states that it all depends on the parents. She argues, “the responsibility also lies with parents to keep up with new technology and make sure their children are using it safely and sensibly” (Curtis 2013). Therefore, if the parent is not attentive on how and how much their children is using technology, their children can have a negative outcome for example lack of social
Today’s technology has greatly impacted the young children’s everyday lives. Phones, tablets, and computers are all a form of technology that impact the way kids are influenced. Some children get phones or computers at young ages and it can cause kids to depend on it to entertain them. Eventually they will allow the technology to take over and have it become the form of communication between friend and family instead of face to face. As parents continue to buy their children new technology they don’t monitor the amount of time their children spend on the Internet. Technology is becoming more advanced overtime which causes children to become more attached and unable to function without it near by.
