We use technology in almost every aspect of our daily lives; it is how we stay connected in this fast-paced world. Technology provides many benefits, but it has the potential to destroy many people. With technology use on the rise, bullying has taken a new, more destructive form. Cyberbullying, as defined by the Cyberbullying Research Center, is the willful and repeated harm inflicted through the medium of electronic text (qtd. in Chait). Cyberbullying is a serious problem and has serious consequences. There are many contributing factors to cyberbullying. Children and young adults have almost infinite access to social networking sites, chat forums, and cell phones. It is hard to find a middle school age child without access to …show more content…
Cyberbullying occurs around the clock and everyone is able to witness the harassment when it is published online. This type of bullying has the potential to lead to many health problems in an individual. Victims of cyberbullying are more likely to turn to drugs or alcohol at a young age to escape the pain they are feeling (“Cyberbullying”). This type of behavior changes the person through and through. They are now dependent on a substance to subside their pain that has been inflicted on them. Another health problem that has been linked to cyberbullying is having abdominal pains and headaches (Drummond). These victims have so much anxiety due to the torture they are facing their bodies are reacting in an unhealthy way. Insomnia has also been connected to this type of bullying (Drummond). This may be because adolescents are unaware of when another rumor or piece of private information about them is going to be published. 34% of teenagers are said to be the victims of cyberbullying in a study conducted by Finnish researchers which shows that these victims are more likely to have abdominal pains, and suffer from insomnia (Drummond). If the bullying continues more problems are likely to develop in the individual, physically or mentally. Cyberbullying can also lead to behavioral problems. Younger children may begin to act out in school or
Cyberbullying is prevalent in today 's society due to the abundance of teenage students having
Cyberbullying didn’t really seem like a big deal at first until technology really advanced all across the world. The 1990’s is when the technology ship really set sail. As of 2004, 45% of americans owned their very own cell phone. As of now, 77% of Americans now own cell phones. Now, nearly seven-in-ten americans now use social media and that is where the bullying starts. In 2005, only 5% of
Typically, the person that is doing the cyberbullying is generally a victim of bullying themselves. How is cyberbullying done? Normally, the use of electronic devices to send messages that tend to emotional hurt someone feelings. Social media can lead to many negative outcomes when communicating to others. For example, if a teenage boy responds on a girl’s photo stating she is “ugly” is considered online bullying. One popular social media site is Facebook that over millions of people use for communicating. Facebook can be a positive source to communicate with family and friends that you may not see often. Also, it can be a very negative source that a lot of people use to criticize one another. Therefore, cyberbullying occurs nationwide
To start with, Cyberbullying can lead to physical and mental harm. When someone cyberbullies another person it can lead to sadness, frustration, and anger in their own home. If someone couldn’t take these overwhelming feelings any longer, they might consiter harming them self as their only option. As psychologist Eden Foster states “Cyberbullying can also lead to kids getting physically injured.” This is a scary situation
In 2014, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) did a study on bullying and the found that 19.4% of all the students interviewed had been bullied at school. This may not seem very surprising, bullying has been going on for decades. Generations of men and women have come to fear the people who walk the halls, stealing lunch money from those weaker than them. However, it is interesting to note that 14.8% of that 19.4% had reported being cyber bullied. Unlike the standard physical bullying, cyberbullying is a slightly more recent development, but it has evolved to become much more deadly. It gives bullies a better tool for creating more widespread pain. The awareness for cyber bullying needs to increase and ultimately, cyberbullying needs to be abolished completely due to its destructive capabilities.
In the 21st century, Technology has transformed society in revolutionary ways. Anyone is able to instantly communicate with someone else via email, text or social media. Even though instant communication can achieve extraordinary things, it can also be used for horrible things. In fact, one of the biggest problems that schools face is cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is the act of harming or harassing another person using the internet.
Bullying has been around since the beginning of time. Parents may remember when they were kids and the bully would pick on them or their friends by stealing lunch money or just getting beat up, and that was the end of it. The victims remember the hurt, frustration, and sadness it caused. However, these days, bullying is not just happening on the playground or at the bus stop, it is happening on the Internet and on cell phones, making it possible to bully a child 24 hours a day with multiple bullies and thousands of kids watching. Cyberbullying follows children nonstop and into the safety of their house. Sometimes kids are afraid to inform their parents about the cyberbullying that they will think its there fault. Or that their parents will call the bullies parents or other parents, making the bullying worse. However, the effect and pain that comes from cyberbullying is real. People underestimate cyberbullying, just because it is happening online and not in person. Cyberbullying can lead to many different factors like drinking, and drugs, poor grades, depression, eating disorders. Many students have even taken their own lives because of another student saying something to them online. Cyberbullying has been taking place a lot more in middle and high schools because of the increased usage of social media networks and technology. Cyberbullying is worse and more harmful than traditional bullying.
Cyberbullying is an epidemic that can effect anyone. It is a disease that is spreading more rapidly every day and is costing us our most precious resource, our children.
Cyberbullying can also cause mental health issues. Like Amanda Todd, kids sometimes turn to self-harm, alcohol, and drugs to help them escape from their troubles. However, as if those practices were not bad enough, they cause problems with concentrating, using proper social behavior, and processing emotions. It is devastating that kids think cyberbullying is worse than drinking, using heroin, and cutting their own wrists. This speaks levels on just how drastic cyberbullying can
Another consequence with cyberbullying is that it causes an unsafe learning environment. Even though cyberbullying happens online or through some type of technology, other people have access and can see what is being said and what is happening online. With everyone having access and being able to see what is happening cyberbullying can easily be turned into face to face bullying causing
Small minds. Not conscious of their future. Not aware that posting, and commenting online can lead to big problems. Cyberbullying is more detrimental to middle school girls because their immature minds do not consider the long-term consequences of their short-term behavior.
“Professor Campbell said the study showed 59 percent of the children participants felt face-to-face bullying was worse for them than being cyberbullied.”(Face-To-Face Bullying Worse Than Cyber-attacks) It is understandable that traditional bullying causes physical harm but what this argument does not take into account is that there are more factors than just physical harm. It doesn’t take the victim to be physically harmed for them to become emotionally distressed. Cyberbullying increases the risk of anxiety, depression, and suicide. Cyber bullying has a long lasting effect on the
Many negative effects are outcomes of cyber bullies. The impact cyber bullying has on kids is detrimental. Victims can develop psychological problems. For example, victims begin having anxiety, lower self-esteem, and frustration. They may also be diagnosed with depression. It’s tough to ignore cyber bullying. Compared to school bullies, internet bullies cause their victim more emotional pain. Children and teenagers are able to escape school bullies when they return home. However targets of cyber bullying don’t have that advantage.
While cyberbullying affects each child differently, there has been a clear correlation between victims and non-victims and their self-esteem. In one study, bullied victims had less self-esteem than those who were not bullied online. Additionally, it was reported that victims of cyberbullying were thirty percent more likely to think about committing suicide (Cyberbullying Research Center, 2012). With the lack of parent supervision, it was found that those who spent more than three hours per school day on social networks were 110% more at risk to be a cyberbully victim as compared those who do not spend as much time online (Gilkerson, 2012). What may be worse is the fact that majority of those bullied online do not tell their parents or an adult about what occurred. Despite the fact that most adolescents state that bullying occurs more offline then online, cyberbullying is still a real and large threat to the youth of America (Lenhart, 2007).
Victims who constantly feel harassed doesn’t only happen online. What’s happening online also happens on their social environment. Cyberbullying causing rumors leads to teenagers to talk about it during schools, homes, phones, and outside. It makes the victim feel depressed because other people are making fun of the
