The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain In the essay “The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain” by Langston Hughes, Hughes discussed how African Americans felt belittled about their culture and of themselves because they were not white. The African Americans sensed that white people were better than them, so they embraced the white peoples ‘art, music, and literature instead of their own. Hughes then go on to talk about one of the main problems in the African American families, by conversing that the African American parents try to conform to the ways of white families- comparing high class, middle class, and the low class. I can relate to some of the things that Hughes has stated about the different categories of class. In summary, Hughes states that the high class Negros forget where they came from and give service to the expensive restaurants & movies in the North. Hughes also says that the high class has their house and nice luxury cars located in the South. The middle class parents send their kids to a diverse school and often compares the white people’s lives to theirs. The low class are the people who go out and enjoy their own hobbies and don’t give one care in the world about what anyone has to say. From reading this article, I came to the realization that we as a society today, still view the white people as standardized America. I also came to a conclusion that I will be like the low-down folk from the article “The Negro and the Racial Mountain”. I will keep on finding beauty in myself no matter what other races may think; in addition, I will buy whatever I want because I desire to rather if it’s from Walmart, Gucci, or Payless, not just because it’s what the white folk have. I will find my own identity, love how I was created, and not compare it to the white
