The Never Ending War Have you ever wondered how life would be if drugs were to be legalized? Would criminal activity decrease or increase? Many people have thought about this and some even believe that if drugs were to be legalized crime and drug usage would suddenly decrease. I think that the exact opposite would happen if drugs were to be legalized. These people also claim that drugs can help with some diseases. Although this may be true, I believe that the negative effects that drugs would bring into our society would definitely outweigh the positive ones. If drugs were to be legalized, crime would increase, drug usage would increase, and there would be a lot more deaths because of overdosing! As said by Ruby Michael in her article, “Should drugs be legalized?”, “The authorities would of course determine which drugs to legalize; marijuana, heroin, and cocaine would top the list. What about PCP? Unlikely, the experts say, which of course would guarantee continued illegal trafficking.” This means that maybe trafficking would continue with stronger more deadlier drugs which in turn could damage society permanently. Some say that if drugs are legalized it doesn’t necessarily mean that everyone out there will miraculously start consuming drugs. Although this is true what about the parties that people attend to? There will be heroin, and crack readily available instead of just alcohol. Since there is a lot of people in parties there will also be a lot of peer pressure to try the drugs even when someone is hesitant to do so. Drug usage would increment and so will the number of addicts in our communities. Since our bodies can create a tolerance to drugs, a higher dose of drugs would be needed to get the “high” feeling making addicts want more and more until their bodies eventually give out. With drugs out legally we can expect more deaths from drug usage. In 2010 alone there was 38,329 deaths because of people overdosing(drug facts.org). We can expect more higher numbers of overdosing if drugs are put into our pharmacies to be sold legally.
