The document “The New-England Primer, 1870” with no author ascribed to it, was a common textbook used for teaching children basic life principles, manners, reading, writing, and religion throughout. Multiple copies were printed, by different issuers with the content varying little from each. The “New-England Primer” could be easily guessed of being a textbook which is rarely used. The excerpt shown in the book “Going to the source”, which included moral instructions for boys and girls, was written in an oddly fashion which would not be suitable in modern times. The New-England primer if given in a document without any dates to point when it was published or printed can easily trick the reader into believing that it is a modern document. Unlike other historical textbooks, the “New-England Primer” has the purpose you can find in many present-day textbooks. The purpose is broad and provides no hints to the time period it was used in. The document raises many questions, mainly to the fact it was published back in the 1690s. The excerpt from the New-England Primer raises the question why is it formatted in the way where the moral instructions for the boys is written in a more sequential form whereas the girls moral instructions is formatted as poem with rhythm. The time period explains why it is formatted the way it was, with women not having as much rights as men back then. It is also structured as the boys have more to do other than women where the excerpt states, “ For a girl who is good , and so pretty as you, may have what she pleases, your servant, Miss Prue.” As it progresses onto what a bad girl encompasses, a swear is used to describe what a bad girl is, as stated “Will any one give to such saucy sluts.” Why would the author use a swear, in a book used to encourage others not to
