The lyrics in the Nirvana song “Polly” can be someone what ambiguous depending on one's interpretation. The song is told from the perspective of a rapist who is keeping a young girl captive for his own pleasure. The song tells a story of her time and outlines her experience. The song features consistently changing lyrics that bring the listener to a new standpoint, even though the narrator's perspective remains the same. As the song progresses the lyrics give the consumer is given an inside look to the potential mind of a of an actual rapist, through Kurt Cobain’s eyes.
The song is based on a true event where a 14 year old girl was abducted, raped and tortured. After being held for ten days, she finally had a chance to get away when she

Later on in the song he states “I got some rope, you have been told” referencing to the way he restrained and controlled her. Once the song reaches the chorus the viewpoint becomes more established and the identity of the narrator is revealed.
Throughout the song the word “Polly” evolves. At the beginning, it appears that Cobain is referring to a bird, maybe a parrot, due to the lyrics “Polly wants a cracker”. In the next line of the song Cobain states “Maybe I should get off her first” which is the first implication that Polly is a person. Through it the song however, he keeps going back to referring to her as a bird when he says “Isn’t me, have a seed” and “Let me clip your dirty wings”.These lyrics could be saying that the rapists believes that he is doing the right thing by feeding her and trying to take care of her. Overall the reason that he refers to her as “Polly” references how the rapist sees her as a pet or an object, instead of a person.
I believe that this song was the way Cobain choose to speak out about issues like rape and assault. Even thought it was not intentionally in the original recording, the repetition of “Polly says”, could been seen as his way of speaking out., attempting to give victims a voice. Cobain often had issues with harm and violence, and used his writing as an outlet to process experiences. I would like to think of this song as way of Cobain processing and vocalizing her experience, to spread a anti rape message.

To start off, the first stanza in her song represents a sense of how unavoidable change is and how the confusion of the bond combined with the stress of the blame game can lead to a doomed
This song is all about Taylor convincing her crush that she is better for him than his current girlfriend. In this line, Taylor mainly talks about the boy’s current girlfriend and all the qualities that make it sound like she’s wrong for him. In this part of the song she mainly uses pathos to sway the judgement of the boy and more importantly, her fans listening to the song. Pathos is very important when trying to convince people because humans tend to concentrate on the emotional aspect of things. Especially when it comes to music. Using pathos, Taylor is able to stir up negative emotions about the complaining girlfriend right at the beginning of the song. At the last part of the line, she also uses pathos to show the contrast between her
The song is written about an attractive woman that appeals highly to Robert Plant. He speaks of the way she moves and her physical appearance in a very sexual
In this chapter we start seeing a flow threw the book Etta Mae is getting back from another one of her trips and is coming to her home which she shares with her good friend Mattie Michaels. As she arrives in a new car , with a new outfit and carrying records. Ludacris does a remarkable job of portraying his message about the struggles that some adolescents are faced with. “Runaway Love”, by Ludacris, featuring Mary J. Blige (2007), represents the theme of struggle through hip-hop and rap music. It is about little girls who are “stuck up in the world on their own.” They have to take care of themselves because the people they are around do not care about them. They range from nine to eleven years in age, and their goal in life, at such a young age, is to run away from home. Ludacris is trying to get the listener to realize the struggles that even children have to face because adults are not the only ones who have problems, like most people believe. He is very successful in
The song is related to the novel Life of Pi, because it represents Pi’s journey to survive on the lifeboat, while he makes compromises to stay determined and hopeful. It symbolizes his adventurous journey with a 450 pound tiger having limited food, water, and shelter. The producers of the song have included enthusiastic and passionate music, which is the perfect match for a novel like Life of Pi that keeps the readers excited and determined throughout story.
The most prevalent issue observed in the lyrics and music videos was gender and sexuality. This was in issue that was present and reoccurring in all of the top songs but occurred in different ways. This was no surprise though because we live “In a culture where sex and gender are centrally important” (2015; 73). The issue arises in the genre of music because of the way gender and sexuality is presented. In the top song “Die a Happy Man’ by Thomas Rhett, objectification was presented in both the lyrics and the music video. In the lyrics he says “Baby that red dress brings me to my knees, Oh but black dress makes it hard to break” and goes on to say “You’re a saint, you’re a Goddess, the cutest, the hottest, a master piece” (lyrics). It seems that his goal is to complement her, but he is objectifying her by judging her femininity (2015; 203). He also does this in the music video by having the girl in a bikini the whole time. Not only was the women objectified, but Thomas exposed a stereotypical relationship consequence. In modern society men tend to make a stereotype that they have to give up everything to be with a woman. Thomas did this in his lyrics when he talks about how he could “never get to see the Northern lights” or “never get to build my mansion in Georgia or drive a sports car up the coast of California” (lyrics). The second song was “Strip It Down” by Luke Bryan. In this song Luke definitely introduces gender roles in both the lyrics and the video. The song
The song chosen was appropriate because of the lyrics and tone. The lyrics reflected someone getting caught up in a storm and having a very difficult time like Krakauer. The song’s tone is somber and melancholy, reflecting how many of the climbers felt during the incident. The only issue with the sounds is that it is country and that it doesn’t blend well with the book. However the writing and tone of the song fit very well.
The song continues to venture into the theme of justice and injustice. Although all the evidence supports the Hurricane’s innocence, the community as a whole acts to ensure that injustice is served.
The Dixie Chicks released the song “Goodbye Earl” in 2000 on their album Fly. The song is structured to follow what is known in music as a “story song,” meaning it is narrated in the third person. The story involves two best friends named Mary Anne and Wanda. The audience hears how they parted ways after high school and Wanda married a man named Earl who was violent and abused her. Mary Anne returns to Wanda when she gets hospitalized and they form a plan to kill Earl by poisoning him with black-eyed peas.
This song particularly is confusing in its general direction and message, but perhaps that is what makes it so tangible and why Weezer was so successful. It is relatable in that it is not an ethereal, untouchable piece of art, but still art in its’ own right, because Weezer plays it close to the vest by presenting the song more as a stream of consciousness; both jumbled and erratic; as opposed to a finely-tuned, edited entertainment
This is an inspirational song for an average teenage girl, but as I pointed out there were some contradictions to the lyrics and the meaning. They may want to see themselves as beautiful in every way possible, but the world is a puzzle and there is a piece that is gone because of what has become socially acceptable.
Ludacris grew up in Atlanta as an only child with a single mother. This song was brought about because having a daughter made him think more about the problems that teen girls face. Once this song was released Ludacris began to work with the National Network for youth and the National Runaway Switchboard. The organizations had seen some increase in calls received after his work. Ludacris song Runaway love ft. Mary J. Blige represents the theme of struggle through hip hop and rap music. Runaway love tells us the story of three little girls that are stuck in this world alone. These girls are not even in their teens yet; they have no one that cares for them. These three girls are trying to leave there home to escape the abuse and troubled parents
Comprehending her lyrics, one may perceive from the understanding that her intended audience is actually anyone who may be feeling the same way as her and the effect in which she wishes to have upon them is to be like her in the
