Decent Essays

The lyrics in the Nirvana song “Polly” can be someone what ambiguous depending on one's interpretation. The song is told from the perspective of a rapist who is keeping a young girl captive for his own pleasure. The song tells a story of her time and outlines her experience. The song features consistently changing lyrics that bring the listener to a new standpoint, even though the narrator's perspective remains the same. As the song progresses the lyrics give the consumer is given an inside look to the potential mind of a of an actual rapist, through Kurt Cobain’s eyes.

Later on in the song he states “I got some rope, you have been told” referencing to the way he restrained and controlled her. Once the song reaches the chorus the viewpoint becomes more established and the identity of the narrator is revealed.
Throughout the song the word “Polly” evolves. At the beginning, it appears that Cobain is referring to a bird, maybe a parrot, due to the lyrics “Polly wants a cracker”. In the next line of the song Cobain states “Maybe I should get off her first” which is the first implication that Polly is a person. Through it the song however, he keeps going back to referring to her as a bird when he says “Isn’t me, have a seed” and “Let me clip your dirty wings”.These lyrics could be saying that the rapists believes that he is doing the right thing by feeding her and trying to take care of her. Overall the reason that he refers to her as “Polly” references how the rapist sees her as a pet or an object, instead of a person.
I believe that this song was the way Cobain choose to speak out about issues like rape and assault. Even thought it was not intentionally in the original recording, the repetition of “Polly says”, could been seen as his way of speaking out., attempting to give victims a voice. Cobain often had issues with harm and violence, and used his writing as an outlet to process experiences. I would like to think of this song as way of Cobain processing and vocalizing her experience, to spread a anti rape message.
