The Number Devil- A Mathematical Adventure is a trade book by Hans Magnus Enzensberger that talks about the dreams of a boy named Robert. Robert is a typical boy who is in an algebra course. He hates anything involving numbers and feels intimidated any time that numbers are brought into the equation so to speak. Robert begins to dream about a “Number Devil” who starts to teach him the ways of numbers. Throughout the book, we see the transformation of Robert from a boy who hates working with numbers to a boy who yearns to learn more about why mathematical properties are true. The “Number Devil” slowly begins to introduce to Robert various tricks that he can use in order to solve problems. The “Number Devil” begins slowly by talking to Robert …show more content…
He started to spend more of his time in doors trying to work out complex math equations and spent less of his time outdoors doing the things that any boy his age does. While this occurs, the dreams involving the “Number Devil” start becoming more complex and involved. Eventually, Robert has become a very good mathematician and has access to the society of “Number Devils”. The story ends with Robert wishing to continue on his journey to mathematical enlightenment. This book, based solely on appearance, looks best suited for younger readers. Having read the book, I still feel that this a very good book for younger readers based on the font size of the book and the added illustrations present. However, some of the content presented in the book could easily be supplemented in an advanced mathematics course in high school (such as Calculus). I feel that this is a very good book that can be used in order to introduce younger students to various concepts in mathematics. In addition, this book can also be used in order to differentiate instruction in more advanced math courses. Either function is an effective use to teach students more about mathematics in my
Throughout the story, the narrator perceives Robert as an inadequate person, pathetic, needing help to find his way around and simply not being able to provide for himself. “But he didn’t use a cane and he didn’t
For example, on page 16, the professor asked the housekeeper when is her birthday and she replied say February 20. With the response, he then compared it to the prize number, 284, he received from one of the contests he won and said they are amicable numbers. That is because 220 and 284 have the sum of the factors who are equal to each other. Due to this conversation, it created a stronger relationship between both characters through the curiosity of the housekeeper who decided to look for more “amicable numbers” on her own. As she was trying to find more examples of amicable numbers, she found it really hard because she did not know that amicable numbers could be found between four digit numbers like 1,184 and 1,210. She even had her own son who helped her find the sum of the factors she found. From that moment, the Professor met her son and named him “Root” creating a good relationship between him and her son who was embraced by the
This inner battle leads the reader to become slightly suspicious about Satan’s description of himself in earlier books, and their own interpretation of his earlier words. It becomes difficult to view Satan as a hero, when his own words call into doubt everything for which he stands. While Satan’s ultimate decision is to carry through with his plan, the reader is invited to look through this decision,
In the novella, The First Part Last Angela Johnson uses the book to influence and inspire change. The book shows how bobby is finally coming of age, by providing symbols of childhood and symbols of a grown up.
As an extracurricular program our school extends our knowledge by having a program called electives. The school offers art, sport stats, comic creation, The Number Devil, P.E, coding, and Puzzle Solving. One of the electives that helps you in math is The Number Devil. The Number Devil is a book that talks about a boy named Robert that always had terrible dreams. Each Wednesday, your group and you will have a conversation about the dreams you read about. Then our math teacher, will help us understand the math concept that we read about. At the end of the book, you start to learn things that you will learn next year. The Number Devil is a great book, and you will learn numerous of things.
Through the story the relationship between Robert and the narrator evolves. The relationship goes from being shallow and almost non-existing to understanding and friendly. Robert teaches the narrator a very valuable lesson that
Robert’s cultural hero side is brought out by his willingness to enlist in the army and fight for his country. His patriotism is very resilient, much like how the coyote heroically takes the first leap in ensuring the safety of the brink before signalling for Robert to cross. Robert’s creator side is one that allows him to make important decisions to maintain his soldiers’ wellbeing. One big risk he takes as a creator is when he decides to shoot the German soldier with a sniper rifle. He does this to guarantee his men are safe, similar to how the coyote leads Robert to a place with water and safety. Thus, Robert does see himself in the coyote. Because of that encounter, he is a more

In the novel An Ungodly child by Rachel green, the Devil’s personality and appearance is seen to be different as Green imbibes satire into biblical stories. The word Satan has been used more as an identifying noun than a title in recent times. Christians generally recognize Satan as an adversary, an opponent, or an accuser. However, many of the norms surrounding the description of his character are not present in this novel. The story of the red ugly guy with horns, a tail, red fiery eyes and a trident becomes a handsome ebony black man dressed in a “conservative business suit and…Cuban-heeled boots” (Green 285). This novel does not completely support the traditional beliefs of the Devil which is that he kills, steals and destroys. Historical conceptions of Satan are different from the novel because the novel implies that all supernatural creatures are not completely holy or completely evil but are subject to free will and the ability to choose between good and evil.
A simple bit of mathematics, like subtraction, were one taken away from the top line becomes one added on to the bottom. The devil's arithmetic. In this story that may be historical fiction, this small phrase means so much. Were the number being people you could be chosen at any given time and added to the bottom line. Unfortunately for them the bottom line was the death count. Being on the top was better than the bottom, but not by much. They were treated like animals and had to work for days with no pay. If these people did not work they were slowly slid into the bottom line.

He stops troublesome plots, theft, and villains everywhere out to hurt people’s freedoms. Simon Bar Sinister is the main villain and is always looking for a way to control the world and its citizens. He wants to influence the minds of people forcibly (Underdog). In the series the character of Underdog would be a parallel to Christ. Christ does not encourage disobedience to the law but wants everyone to have a choice. When people fall into evil He is there to help them get back up. The devil is like Simon Bar Sinister. He does not care about freedom of choice and would love the whole world to go
This is a very cute book with a really big concept that no mater what someone looks like or acts like they can still do anything everyone else can. It is a very fun read considering the book is set in a poem sort of tone. It is also very fun and has cute and diverse pictures. I think this book should be used in an older classroom because of the advanced concept. In the book it doesn't tell you what child is the main caricature and gives a vaig idea about who the book is about. It would be a good book for 5-10 year olds. I feel like they would be able to grasp the concept that since you don't know exactly who the main caricature is it makes the concept that everyone is the same stronger.
Can you imagine the life that you should escape not to be killed after having worked a tiresome job at a put for years and years? Here is the story called “The Devil and his Boy” written by the bestseller writer Anthony Horowits in 1998. The last time I did something challenging or scary was this school year when I joined the Hawthorne Math Counts Club. It was like the hardest thing in the world because of the hard problems and some of them I didn’t know what I was doing sometimes on the problems because of the wording and how to set it up. But I said to myself “I can do it because i'm never giving up.
