What are the obstacles to direct communication? Why do social workers need to understand these? The obstacles of to direct communication is that the social worker has to be able to use direct communication and be able to be mindful of the clients feelings. For example I am a male, so when talking to a female ho has just been sexually assaulted I would be mindful of my words. A social worker needs to understand this because whatever they say to client has to be in a way the client can understand and process without being hostile. If the social worker uses direct communication with someone with a anger issue they social worker could be in danger. According to the textbook some other obstacles include client ambivalence, societal taboos, painful/frightening affect and context of the engagement (Shulman, 2012, ps. 69-70). Why do we need to tune into ourselves and the client? Social workers need to turn themselves and the client in order to provide effective treatment. This is similar to therapeutic alliance, a social worker must be well rounded. If a social worker is completely professional the client may feel inferior and hold back their emotions and actions. We need to tune into ourselves and the client to make sure that we are both being direct in our communication, and to get in touch with feelings the client may have (Shulman, 2012, p. 72).
